I searched and didn't see a thread for this already in existence, so I apologize if it's already been done.

Now, most of us will admit that we can get REALLY bored sometimes. You know what I mean, it's summer time, you've got no job, no girlfriend/boyfriend, all of your friends are out of town, there's nothing good on tv that you havent already seen a million times, and you've just beaten one of your games for the bazillionth time. So, what do you do? If you're like me, you go down tp either the local game rental place or the local game store. And when you get there, you spend a while looking around, looking for something, anything, that might be interesting. But guess what? You're one badass gamer, and you've already played, and beaten every good game you've ever been told about. So now you've got to find something new. And guess what: most of the game boxes don't really do a good job of explaining the game. You look around for 20, 30+ minutes, and finally you find something, something that is at least slightly interesting.
You get home and pop it into your system of choice. Now, you're not expecting anything great, but, lo and behold, you find the game enjoyable. In fact, the game rocks. You end up spending 20+ hours straight without even contemplating stopping. And you're happy...this game becomes one of your favorites of all time.

So, what I want to know is if any of you have ever played a game without knowing anything beforehand, and with low expectations, and found that you really liked it. Like I said, a game that you PERSONALLY knew nothing about, not necessarily a game that no one else really liked.

For me, it was Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I had never before played an RPG, and one day I was at Blockbuster and just randomly rented it because I'd already rented pretty much everything else there. I'd never even heard of it, but in the end it became one of my favorite games, and I still occasionally play it.

Well, when I was younger, before the days of the internet telling me what I should look out for and what I should stay as far away from as possible, this is what I always did...

It was really all about word of mouth/going over a friends house and playing that new game that just came out.

I must say though, my greatest purchase of all time, without knowing what I was getting myself into, has to be Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. I just wish they'd remake that game for the DS or something. I want a mobile version. =/

Morrowind. I hadn't ever heard of the Elder Scrolls series, but a friend picked it up on a whim, looking for a new RPG, and we both fell in love with it.

For me that game would be Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

Had never heard of the game before, and frankly, the thought of an RPg in first person mode put me a bit off in the beginning.
But not for long, I soon came to enjoy Morrowind very much, in fact it still is one of my favorite games!

God bless you Bethesda, I love you so much!

I got the first Baten Kaitos for the Gamecube knowing very little about it, and it's without a doubt my favourite single player console game of all time.

Okami, never heard of it before, and it looked kinda cheesy for my PS2 but I thought "What the hell, why not." and got it. I fucking loved it, too easy but still I loved it.

Batman Begins for the Gamecube (I assume it was released on other platforms, too). I was bored, it was cheap and had Batman in. Expecting it to be a shitty film tie-in thing, I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be alright.

Oh, wow... This has happened to me quite a few times. This method was how I discovered Final Fantasy Tactics, Riveria: The Promised Land, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, Phantom Brave, and Beyond Good & Evil.

Of course, I've bought my share and then some of crap this way.

Fuckin A my friend.

Anyway, I was internetless for a few months and hadn't got a good game in ages when Fallout 3 came out and i hadn't heard anything about it, so when I tried it, it was like *Choir music* SALVATION!

Final Fantasy VII. First RPG I had ever played, just because friends kept telling me to. They never said much about it, just that it was one of the best games of all time. Then I tried it. To this day, my favorite game.

Ditto.

The first time I saw the game I thought the graphics were horrid and washed up. And then I explored around and heard the music. I just fell in love with the whole game after that.

But what really drew me in was that first night that you (more or less) spend running around the town in the rain and mud. Ah, I'll never forget that first flash of lightning and thunder that scared the bejesus out of me...

Second Sight. The games storyline blew me away. The ending made the game go from a 7 out of ten to an 8.5 or 9 in my books. It only cost me like 10 bucks too.

I bought Morrowind expansion pack, then realized that i need the full game to run that thing. Next day i got to school and came up to one of my classmates. He plays sports games and shooters only, but i had nothing better to do and i asked if he happens to have Morrowind game at he's home. I was surprised hearing that, got the game three days latter and loved it. Same thing with Postal 2, as i bought the expansion, not the game, guess i never learn.
I bought Disciples 2 just because i liked the box art and it's one of my favorites now.

Won a small bit of money and went to get a new PS2 and saw Wild Arms 3 on the shelf for $5, best 5 dollars I've spent in a while. Easily in my top ten favorite RPGs.
