What are some of the most gruesome/saddest/awesome ways to die in a video game?
I'm talking about the type of death that either makes you feel sorry for your character, or the one that is just amazingly awesome.

I would say one of the Drag Tentacle deaths in Dead Space (3rd I believe)

What happens is Isaac is dragged away by a giant tentacle, and must shoot a certain spot on the tentacle to kill it. But if he fails...
He is pulled down into a hole as he tries to hold on for dear life
Claws his way back up the hole
And then is pulled back down by a tiny claw thing.

Poor Isaac :(

EDIT: ALSO

When Isaac is killed by the Hunter Necromorph (I think that is the name)

It stabs Isaac
Cuts off his legs
Possably stabs him some more
Cuts off his left arm
Isaac brings his right arm up, pleading for mercy (I think)
And the monster cuts off his head

Hermes getting killed in GOW 3. He gets one leg ceremonially cut off then the other is ripped from the socket and then gets beat to death by said legs.

Which jump, there are so many of them... I think you meant to say "every jump". :p

OT: All of the crashes in Motorstorm look so nice. Same thing can be said about Burnout: Paradise.

Resident Evil 4: When your in the caverns fighting the giant bugs. Then you get spit on by them, and if you die, you're face ends up melted. Always thought that was pretty cool.

Getting killed by Mr. Chainsaw in Resident Evil 4. Leon puts his hands up to try to stop the blade from getting shoved through his neck, struggles for a moment with a look of pure pain on his face, and then gets decapitated.

Sad, scary, gruesome, and the reason I have an intense phobia of chainsaws.

Dead Space. Nuff said. The amount of thought and detail they put into the death sequences is pretty disturbing..

Yep, mister old-school here.

Jennifer's fate in the first Clock Tower if you are imprisoned with Simon Barrows (which you must at some point in order to move the plot forward) without having the leg of meat from the kitchens. You have no choice but to talk to this poor filthy, starved man to get out, and he descends upon you mumbling 'food... food...'. Cue Jennifer's scream, fade to black and crunchy eating noises. 'Dead End' indeed.

Any death where you're eaten alive is always a bit unnerving to me, even in something cutesy like Mario.

Makes me think I should have died more often. After three playthroughs, I don't really remember seeing alot of deaths... The dragging tentacle, the babies, radiation... yeah, I think I missed alot of entertaining death sequences...

Yeah, whatever you say about the game, you can't deny the death by falling is amazing.

Myself... well THAT scene in Quake 4. I mean you don't die, but it's still the most horrible and viceral thing I've ever seen

Just about anyone that Kratos kills in God of War I and II (I haven't played III yet) goes out in a brutal and violent way. Thesus ( I think) from the second game gets his head slammed in a big heavy door until it (his head) explodes. The two gorgons , Medusa and the big fat one from II, get their heads violently torn off. And not to mention just how you can kill a cyclops.

That is my problem with every game that has jumping. Virtual gravity is not my friend.

You know the final boss?

At the part where he tries to suck Isaac into his mouth... let him do it.

It is beyond horrific!

Of all of the awesome Dead Space moments, you missed the best one. When the little crawling head with tentacles for legs starts to choke you, if you don't fight him off his little tentacles tear you head off, then they shoot down your neck stump and take over your body. And the new head walks away with your former body having never hit the ground.

My jaw dropped on that one.

Yes, I say that death, and it was pretty gruesome, but I say the saddest part of that is when Isaac starts to scream.
Poor Isaac

Yea, that one was crazy, I say it before
What's funny is one person on this website (can't remember the name) said there should be an achievment that comes with that ending called "necromorphed)

Beat me to it. I love it how divider-Izaak wanders away propping up his head and making that whale noise. That wonderful whale noise.
