If the kid looks starving I would see what I could do to help out.

If not then I deny the food. Most likely this is a scam ran by adults. It is poorly done though because if it was my kid I would have them ask for a double cheese burger and an apple pie.

living in Germany i would call the proper authorities, i don't like a lot of stuff in my country but no child has to live on the streets and be hungry and if the the kid has a home and doesn't get food there because his parents spend money on booze and cigarettes something should be done about that too.

I wouldn't give the kid the food.
I'd tell him to hang round for a bit. Whenever I'm on lunch/my shift is over I'd buy him some real food.

Frankly, if I give him that food for free, then I AM him. In this situation, you look out for #1. I'd notify the authorities that there was a lost child there. Caring for this child is none of my business. I'd probably buy the kid something if he were starving, but I wouldn't do something that could cost me my livelihood or life just to give a lost kid one meal.

I refuse to lose my job over something like that. I'd call the authorities and have the kid picked up so he can be taken care of. Giving him a burger will not help his situation at all. I am temporarily working as a cashier at a locally owned grocery store chain (their only other competition is Wal-Mart of course) until I have to go back to my university at the end of summer, and this cute kid (I did this all the time as a kid) was like 5 cent short for a candy bar he wanted. I voided his sale, took the candy, and sent him on his way to find something cheaper. His dad was sitting outside in the car, I don't know why he seriously expected to use the cute trick on me. They call that "sweethearting" which is till abuse which is grounds for a write up, suspension, or dismissal. If you come in to buy something, have enough money because I'm not losing my job for you. I mean seriously, and a happy meal is super expensive anyway, couldn't he order from the dollar menu?

I may pay for it myself, but really that's not going to do him any favors. He'll still be poor, homeless, or whatever. Calling authorities would benefit him so much more.

Buy happy meal, secure child, call authorities. Also, look for new job- I like to imagine my work ethic is such that if I were on such dire straights with a manager, it would be becuase they are a douche and I shouldn't be working for them.

Personally, I like the situation my district manager brought up at a meeting the other day: 'you are a manager in a small retail store. A woman comes in pushing her elderly mother in a wheelchair. it quickly becomes apparent the woman is... 'challenged', and shouldn't be out by herself taking care of an invalid. They go toward a back aisle, where the woman suddenly strips naked and stands there, dazed and oblivious to the world. What do you do?'

This wasn't a hypothetical, by the way... it happened a few weeks ago in another store in our district, and since we were in a manager meeting, she was curious how we would have handled it. The store in question blocked off the back aisles, got the woman's husband's phone number from the mother, and had him come in ad snap her out of it.

If the kid is homeless how is giving him a happy meal going to help him the the long term? You know that there are agencies that deal with this sort of thing.

Also, it's McDonald's. Are you that hard up for a job that getting fired from there will ruin you? You obviously hate it. Hell, unless you live in the Middle of Bum-Frack Kansas there has to be another 15 fast food joints in the area plus 12 gas stations, 4 supermarkets and a Walmart. Man up, call child services and let Mr. Manager fire your ass. Then write corporate and explain that you are going public with the fact that you were let go because you were forbidden from helping a homeless kid get the help he needs. "Channel 4 problem solvers" or whatever your local TV station's equivalent exists for these issues. Mr. Manager will be given orders to backtrack faster than you can make a Big Mac once corporate thinks they will get a PR black eye.

A young kid (4-5 years) walks into the store. He looks homeless and poor. You´re really on the fence with your boss. One more infraction and you´ll get fired. It´s an infraction to give customers free food, obviously. It´s also an infraction to leave your post FOR ANY REASON. The kid goes forward to you and orders a happy meal.

You ready the meal, but when you give it to him, he doesn´t pay. You take it out of his hands and he begins sobbing quietly. Do you give him the happy meal or not?
heh. I'mma good girl AND I work at McD's IRL and have done something like this before. my boss is never really breathing down my neck and my response would be to fish the money out of my pocket (I carry my changepurse everywhere) and pay for the meal myself. if I can't pay for all of it, I delete teh meeal and give it to him for free.

As so many others before me, I would pay for the meal myself and call authorities. What can I say, I hate seeing unhappy kids.

Also like so many others have questioned; what is with the $ I mean come on, so it's a large company but their food is dirt cheap.

I'd give it to him, go tell my boss to go fuck himself and then leave, why the hell was I working in MacDonalds anyway?

I'd probably pay for it myself... or get him something else, paying for that as well. And then contact the proper authorities.

step one take kids happy meal tears are not going to melt something that has been frozen for 25 years and had people better than you trying to get me to have a heart im not a vampire so i don't have to watch my humanity
step 2 grab broom beat kid for trying the moral dilemma routine on me or if there are too many customers shoo it way its bringing down the tone of the place

actually i kid i follow company policy to the letter what ever it is probably taking the food and tossing it while asking the manager to deal to it they don't pay enough to think for my self

I wold think that the kid is faking it because if I was hungry and homeless I wold like to eat not to get a toy, and even if he ordered something else I woldn't give him my job feeds me and I am a selfish bastard.

Well, not really. You would perform an infraction and it is a legitimate reason for infraction. Hell, telling your boss to go fuck himself is good enough to get fired and a good reason too (Public Indecency).
hehe, i really really hope he haves a microphone hidden somewhere because proving i said that is going to be really hard, and there were mitigating circumstances, the law isn´t absolute, and any Jury would realize that there were forces beyond the "contract" at work here

as i said, easy.

EDIT: I live in México by the way, and i know things will work out in my favor, the laws over here tend to tip over to the workers side, not the company, and it doesn't matter how many regulations the company haves they would lose the moment we got into Jury because there would be like a hundred inspections, regulations and fines they would have to pay, i´m sure they would settle before reaching court.

Pretty sure even Mc Donalds has at will contracts at this point...which means if your boss wants you gone....your gone. Doesn't even need any infractions. The days of needing infractions to fire someone are long gone. Now if you just don't like someone...fire em. Just don't tell em why. Could be for many reasons that are illegal but it doesn't matter because it's at will. Fire someone and refuse to say why and nothing can be done about it.
I´m sorry but you seem to be under the assumption that "Mcdonalds" laws are over the country laws, "at will" is not acceptable here in MX, not even if the contract says it.

I live in Sweden, we've got more than good enough authorities for handling shit like that, so I'd just call the police and tell them there is a lost child here and get on with my job. How difficult was that?

Also, I find it funny how people always gotta show that they consider companies "evil" and "greedy" by desperately trying to find an S in their name that can be changed to a $.
Frankly speaking - I sort of like your response here. The only thing is that, while this is a socially acceptable response, and even in the proper mindset considering the economy and how important any job is these days, it still might not be the best moral choice.

That's the only part that is harder to reconcile.
