If you build a better mouse trap, the world will beat a path to your door
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

People who like mice don't buy mousetraps

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people. To gain the affection of children; to learn the appreciation of honest critics. To endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty. To find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better.
To know one life has breathed easier because you lived.
This is to have succeeded
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?

yes i believe you've been beaten to the punch by that Scotsmen. I noticed it too in the quotes; "nothing in life is free", and "the best things in life are free." then when looking up quotes I found that one and yelled, "DAM YOU GEORGE SANTAYANA!"

His statement is undisprovable, as he can always say it wasn't a "wise" phrase or else it wouldn't have had a complete counter.

I guess I learned something today. However, I still think it kind of sums up your topic seeing as, "I quote others only in order the better to express myself." Michel de Montaigne

I don't mean to establish two such correct but opposite sayings. Only to have a common heuristic disproven in a particularly humorous or noteworthy style.
