no, No , NO ! Playing games does NOT make you a gamer ! Taking a picture does not make you a photographer , playing an instrument does NOT make you a musician, watching a movie does NOT make you a film critic !

Now that being said, Op is a gamer because he has a passion for gaming. He enjoys it, he reads up upon it , he dedicates time , money and effort on his hobby ( even if he isn't good at some genres ). Just playing games does not make you a gamer, it's much more than that. It's his passion and love for gaming that makes him a gamer. My Mom is NOT a gamer because she plays peggle ( peggle is a gamer and she plays it ) , OP is a gamer because he cares about the medium as a whole.

Seems pretty straightforward.

Still trying to come up with a term. Maybe Gamarse? It has the first three letters of 'game' and another word for ass, which is largely what the more self-righteous and egocentric among us tend to be. But the really cherry here is that it sounds like a butchered pronunciation of gamers.

Real gamers love games.

Notice the lack of the word "video" in that sentance.

Couple of posers around here.

I don't give a damn who you are or how much you game, if you actually bothered to go through the trouble of making an account and post on the escapist forum, you're a gamer.

I'm too young to get a job and am not out of high school yet, I can't afford games and I haven't played every game out there...

Therefore, I am not a real gamer, right? Not by far, in my opinion. I love video games and they are my main and only hobby aside from using the interwebs. I play nothing but video games, hell, even at school.

I play a lot of fighting games, but I always feel like I am holding myself back because I haven't bought a fight stick. I know I should, but they are so expensive...

I haven't played a game in months, but I still watch game reviews and read up on gaming news. I just don't have the time anymore, but I don't think that disqualifies me as a gamer.

I've been playing vid games since I was six now 19. I can tell you I'm not sure if I regret not playing so many hours or not have played at all. I'm happy with the person I am today. My mind is filled with ideas and stuff and I think this will help me as I go into my now 2nd semester of visual arts at my community college.

I think the thing that will always keep me playing games Is that feeling. Its like a drug almost sometimes. You get goosebumps and Its like you just inserted the drug but its invisible. For some people the feeling may be different idk.

I like a good story in a game but another factor is the graphics. In the past year I really started to delve deeper and deeper into graphics and how hardware in the pc makes it possible. I've become obssessed with playing new games and upgrading my pc. Right now I'm tired with the graphics they don't really impress me anymore even crysis 1 on high settings. One day I may quit but 3 or 4 years down the road I'll probably be drawn back in to gaming for a while just to see the improved realism and get lost in games.

Of course you're a Gamer, just now you're a Gamer Dad. That's actually better then being a simple Gamer, because now you can play games with your son. I mean seriously- how many fathers (besides mine, and some I know..) like playing games with their own child? You're going to be playing so many with your son as he gets older plus if you still have a passion for games itself, then you're a Gamer.
He's almost always on my lap while I'm on TF2. Makes it more difficult to play, but he cracks up every time I die. Generally ends up laughing so hard he falls off my lap.

He also loves to watch my roommate play Wii. Has the bruises on his forehead from my roommate's tennis swings to prove it.

I've tried to get him into gaming himself, but he's still young and has no patience at all. The most he's been willing to do is try and dance along with the zombie dancers in The Michael Jackson Experience on Kinect. But even then he's always trying to add his own choreography.

Over-all, I'm not so sure he's going to grow up to be a Gamer like his old man. Maybe one day, but with his demeanor now I only see the casual fragging in his future. Just something to waste a little time while it's raining outside. Guess we will see...

I've been playing vidya gaems for many, many years, I still do, I follow the culture and the effects of them on the world. I believe I've transcended the boundaries of what it means to be a gamer. Some would call me a hero. Some would call me a martyr.

Most would call me a nutter.

There is some logic to this statement, though I personally just followe Yahtzee here because I thought he was funny and my favorite person/ thing on this site is Movie Bob which doesn't always have anything at all to do with gaming. This site is about all mediums of escaping reality. It just happens to focus on gaming, and usually it's even more focused with video gaming.

Iv spent more money on games then anything else and iv had prob killed myself without it due to lack of anything for me.

I started gaming on an Amstrad 6128.

I've played a hell of a lot of games between then and now, and I still don't consider myself a gamer.

Mostly because I wouldn't pay 10 cents for the "culture" that surrounds gaming.

Picked up an Atari 2600 control stick in 1985 and today the only thing thats changed is the controller.

I still game. I have a family of my own now and i'm not doing the job I thought I would be (always envisioned myself owning a pub by the time I was 30 .... it failed, pubs keep shutting down around here now it would be a waste of money to buy in). But I still game.

12 years in the British army and I was still gaming (hey, we have time off you know, we even have music and television ... thats for those of you that thought us soldiers won't know who Drowning Pool are).

All thats changed between 1985 and today are the games (apart from those Indie games that look exactly like games did in 1985) and what I play those games on.

If by gamer you mean "people who spend countless amount of time playing video games" no, you are not, but once you have real responsibilities there is no way to play as much as we did when we were kids and do something with your life.
ummmmm....ok?

well it depends on what you define as gamer. a gamer could be somone who spends a reasonalbe tiem playing, but also has a keen interest (is enithusiastic, takes interest in the gaming world and reads/consumes gaming media)

I consider myself a "retired gamer."

Former FPS Legend back when Doom II and Quake was still the shit, PK in Ultima Online (although that wasn't really much of a skill; obtain crossbow of death, click poor sonnabitch, loot body, ruin someone's entire weekend), elite raiding guilds in a few MMOs to follow, etc. I was 'hardkore' for a number of years. (I even beat Battletoads, mofo.) I had all the consoles, and was spending thousands on incremental hardware updates to my PC to eek out a few extra FPS, mastering the newest games... until one day, in what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity, I came to the realization (while in an MMO no doubt) that I was a dick, and I ran with dicks who were proud of being dicks, so I left the scene.

While I still play and get into quite into a number of titles, I do not want to directly associate with the current generation of elitist, foul-mouthed little teabagging shits that overwhelm the multiplayer community while spewing their hate on how the "casual crowd" are killing the industry by creating a market for "simple, fun games" and how a bunch of people still playing Mario Kart on their Wii is somehow "ruining gaming for the Calladewty crowd" on their mighty PS3s!

I've yet to meet an "Angry Birds" player who was a royal **** about the number of pigs they squished.

Kind of like how I still enjoy anime quite a bit. Been watching and collecting since the days where we still traded poorly-translated VHS tapes that had been re-recorded so many times they were fuzzy as hell through the mail. (Yes, postal... the old guy who visits your house with junk mail every day. They used to deliver packages.)

Frankly, weeaboos ruined that for me, too.
you let other people ruin games for you? (oh and genrelize them as well)

you ever experience the wonders of single player? on your own, withouth the dickheads and the worlds judgemnt? Im just saying I can get that you tone down the gaming if your older/have more responsibilitys

but "the other kids are being MEAN! I dont wanna play anymore!" the cure for the is staying away from forums and online

No, those are all professions is why it doesn't make you that. A photographer, musician, and film critic all get paid to do that. Or if you don't mean professional, then yes - playing games does make you a gamer. I would even do you one better and say that you don't even have to play games just like to play games.

Now that being said, Op is a gamer because he has a passion for gaming. He enjoys it, he reads up upon it , he dedicates time , money and effort on his hobby ( even if he isn't good at some genres ). Your mom is a "casual gamer". Gamers come in many shapes and sizes. What you are talking about is hardcore gamers by my personal definition. People who play only/almost exclusively COD, Peggle, Angry Birds, or any 1 genre and/or have a very small gaming paradigm are casual gamers.

It´s not important to have everything or spending tons of time. It´s more important to know what you like and to have a passion when you play.

And as long as you can understand WHY it means so much to some one to play game "X" and the world is breaking for them because they cannot, you´re a gamer.

that´s it.

My short attention span, My love of multitasking, the fact that I don't own every console, and my love of girly things which takes time, energy, and money away from it.

Then there's the fact that I only really started gaming when the Xbox 360 game out.

Honestly, sometimes I feel like less of a gamer because i'm girly, and not really a tom boy.
gaming has everything to do with playing the games, not what kind of person you are..you just dont fit the steryoptype, thats a good thing
