You can hold down the action button in Fallout 3 to continually drink from a receptacle, instead of having to press the button over and over.
My mind was blown when I found out on the forums a few months ago.

That too! Though it didn't really help, since I never drink out of toilets...

I had a rather difficult time in Soulbringer the first time I played, but through a combination of scroll use, tactics, and bloody-minded determination, I managed to get 1/3 of the way through the game and defeat Bishop Mortan.

Only after that did I look at my journal screen and realize that those plus and minus signs next to my stats might have something to do with using all the leveling points I'd been accumulating. I'd been doing a "level one character" challenge run, and hadn't realized it.

Kingdom Hearts 2. My first playthrough, The Castle that Never Was. I CAN SWITCH MY MAIN KEYBLADE?!

Was still fun, beating the game with the starting keyblade though.

I played through most of Enter The Matrix before I figured out what the Focus ability was for. That's like playing through Spider-Man 2 without web-swinging.

The most recent one was in Guild Wars 2:

THERE IS AN OPTION TO DROP CRAFTING MATERIALS INTO YOUR BANK FROM YOUR INVENTORY?

And any inventory management problems disappeared instantly...
Hahaha. I played the first month or so without knowing this, quite a revelation when I discovered this nifty feature.

It should be noted that you can deposit ALL of them (not just one by one by right-clicking) in one go, by using the little cogwheel in the top right corner of you inventory screen. Chances are you already knew this, but I guess this kind of info is useful to everyone.

Planetside 2: YOU CAN STEER THE DROP PODS?!
That was a really big one for me, makes getting to great sniping locations really fun.

OT: Mine's Planetside 2 as well, I didn't realize until my fourth armor kill that then AV MANA turret has guided missiles. It's even worse because I think it says something about them having a 'wire' or some shit, which actually implies that it's guided... My kills shot through the roof when I realized that I could guide my missiles to where I needed them to go.

Alternate title: "YOU CAN TONGUE UP?"

Ever play a game so often, and feel like you know it so well, only to discover some major ability you never noticed before?

For example, Mega Man 2 is my number one favorite game. It was the first game I ever played, and I was raging over Air Man before I could read. Just a couple of days ago, I found out that you can shoot Metal Blade in any direction. WHAT? I had no idea. All these years. I thought the main advantage was just the bigger projectile.

Also, to a lesser extent, I was four hours into Fallout 3 before I found out you could jump.

So, how about you?
Considering your title choices, I'm guessing you've been watching a good bit of the Game Grumps on Youtube?

On your question:

I can't say I've ever missed any major abilities. I tend to read through and listen to all game instructions. I also test the limits of games to see what buttons do what before I seriously start playing a game.

Edit: Why would anyone rage over Air Man? Two shots with the spinning leaf shield and he is done for.

....

That is news to me. Ha! I always just ignored faucets and toilets as pointless unless I was really desperate for health. Then again, after about 30 hours that never happened anyway given my extreme tendency to hoard items and then sell them for Phat Cash, then use said Phat Cash for Stimpaks and bullets. I probably had enough Stimpaks to bring an army back from the dead.

Was playing Metal Gear Rising last week.

The last boss was kicking my ass, when I accidentally pushed a and x at the same time, and discovered that there is a dodge move. WHAT!?!?!? This entire game I had a dodge move!!!!

Don't know how you didn't know. You have to buy the thing.
I'm wondering how you guys manage not to do any of the things listed so far.

For me, it's Ripper mode in Metal Gear Rising. I got all the way to the last chapter wondering why my Blade Mode meter turned red. Then after being stuck on a fight for a while, I looked up a VR tutorial. I was like "wait, what?! That makes everything SO much easier!"
I didn't realize you could block the Metal Gear Ray's headbutts and tail whips.

Would've been a good thing to know on my vengeance playthrough...

DAGON IS BUILT FROM NULL TALISMAN?

Me learning nyx for the first time, I've been playing dota 2 for nearly a year now and never knew that null talisman was built into something useful.

and:

YOU CAN KILL THE T4 TOWERS AND ANCIENT WITH OUT GETTING BARRACKS AS LONG AS 1 T3 TOWER GOES DOWN?

Learned that thanks to top 10 plays on dotacinema

YOU'RE PROTECTED FROM ELECTROCUTION BY EMP SHIELDING?

In Human Revolution, I was under the impression the EMP shielding augmentation only protected you from the effects of EMP grenades. When I activated it on my run-and-gun playthrough and accidentally walked into a puddle with a live power line in it, I thought that was the end of me. Much to my surprise, Jensen just shrugged it off as if it were nothing.

Also:

YOU CAN ROTATE THE DRAGON'S CLAW?

In the first barrow quest in Skyrim, I had no idea what the combination was to enter the tomb in the barrow near Whiterun. I looked everywhere, and eventually just brute-forced it (There's only 27 possible combinations, so it didn't take long). It wasn't until much later where I twiddled the right analogue stick while browsing my inventory, and the item rotated. I then found out the code was inscribed on the back of the golden claw all along.

YOU CAN SHOOT THEIR LIMBS OFF?! - Dead Space 3

I kid.

Mine have already been mentioned though.

I took me a while to realise in Skyrim you could sprint and rotate the dragon claw's. With sprinting I was aware that stamina affected power attacks, but didn't know you could run faster. With the dragon claw's I just went through the combinations.

I didn't find out you could hold down the button to drink water continuously until sometime during Fallout New Vegas. This is coming from somebody who played Fallout 3 and all of it's DLC's.
