The way I see it, the companies don't expect you to use the very last part of the toothpaste, ketchup etc. They just put it in there because otherwise they'd get accused of being stingy. To me, using the very last drop of toothpaste so I'll get my money's worth is like reading the copyright page in a novel just not to be wasteful. It's nobody's intention that you should make use of everything, they just haven't found a way to make oackages and tubes that don't let anything go to waste.

Im a student Im not 'cheap' I just cant afford to buy a new bottle of ketchup or toothpaste every week. Try paying £290 a month in rent and then put utilities and food on top of that, when you have a yearly loan of £4000 and see how much you use out of a ketchup bottle before you throw it out.

I would probably skip an unnecessary luxury item like ketchup.

When you're buying your food on a student budget, ketchup becomes a necessity, you just hope some days you can make your dinner taste enough like ketchup to pass.

I'm not gonna cut open toothpaste tubes to get the last out, but I'll roll em up pretty tight from the end.

It's not a 'cheap' thing, but I try to recycle all I can too, I have a bag in the kitchen for plastic bottles, one for cans, then a small bin for glass, one for paper, and a small bag for plastic bottle caps and another for batteries, as I figure why just pile anyone on the landfill if it can be reused somehow.

However I AM guilty of chucking out stale soda, there's something about a half empty bottle of pepsi, even tightly closed, that after a two day gap, just doesn't taste the same even tho it's still fizzy. I tend to pour it down the toilet however as I hear it's good for eating away at limescale (acid vs alkali and all that).

I usually would just throw them away.
But if it's like some sort of ketchup bottle, I open a new one, turn the old one upside down and come back to the old one in __ hours and see if it's still worth getting :/

I'll use it until it's pretty much done, but I'm not going to painfully squeeze the last bits out.. I'm definitely not cheap though. I do tend to waste things but only after I've got what I want out of it. Others may see it as a waste but I don't.

It's simple effort to reward ratio, and when you're far too afraid of the outdoors that walking to buy a replacement is a massive undertaking in itself, it becomes clear why I will use everything until it is empty.

Also ketchup is not a luxury item. Ever. Especially as a student.

I use everything down to the point where there's absolutely no way to get anything else out. It's not cheap to get the most out of a product, just rational. I'm not going to throw away a quarter bottle of mustard because I have to bang it a few times to get more out. It's that kind of convenience-before-efficiency thinking that's built this ludicrous society of consumerism and overindulgence, and it's why so many useful objects and materials get thrown away. /socialist rant

Buying a new tube of toothpaste when i could used the one i have now doesnt stop me enjoying myself. I think you mistook the discussion for being about miserly people. This is about making the most out of what you buy.

Its not like when i empty out my shampoo it suddenly depresses me. I like to keep my money that i spent on shampoo because i can then spend it on a chocolate bar or a video game which do make me enjoy myself.

Lets be honest none of the against arguements hold any water what so ever. They cant be bothered to admit they are too laxy to hit the bottle a few times or squeeze the tube a little bit harder. The only arguements they have are:

Massive exaggerations "im not getting every atom".... niether am i? I just use it until it cannot be used anymore. When i cannot get enough shampoo out of the bottle to wash my hair with despite hitting it a bit, i then go and buy a new one or move onto the next one i got in advance.

The issue here is the reason i actually got the candy in the firstplace. I got the candy FOR the chocolate. That is the resource is spent the money on, i bearly register the wrapper as a usable resource because to me it isnt. I use teh chocolate by eating it. All resources i can use are now gone. I have used the candy bar and the whole process is now over.

Erm we do? Just not all on ketchup and mayo. Things that while mildy enjoyable are not as enjoyable as other things i could buy with the money saved?

Bottom line your lazy. It isnt a crime, i dont resent you for it, its a free country (woot) but thats the only reason you dont. It isnt worth the effort for you.

We, humanity, consume too much. So, let's do it in an rational form at least. Put water in the shampoo bottle when it's almost depleted to make sure you aren't wasting.

I assume you live with a parent and don't pay for your own things 'cos if you were like me you would be squeezing that tube of toothpaste and using the crumbs of the soap to wash your hands. When your on less than min. wage living by yourself, paying crazy amounts of tax, throwing out stuff when it starts to get low means your penny-less.

Also makes you a bit stupid, the last bit of toothpaste is just as good as the first bit. Think how many last bits of toothpaste you have thrown away, now add them all up and how many full tubes do you have?

And if I buy something I am damn well going to use it all. Otherwise I feel like I have just wasted my money.
