Considering one of the rules of the Death Note is that the user can neither go to Heaven nor Hell for eternity, I wouldn't use it.
Always wondered about that. Do they just cease to exist? Or do they go to some alternative afterlife.
That's a lot of power to turn up. Lot of good that could be done; lot of bad too. Tough question. I'm not even sure if I think it would be wrong to use it. I mean; if you killed someone you just didn't like then yeah, you're a prick. What about dictators though? Murderers on the loose? Heartless CEOs?
Do the ends justify the means? You might become the very thing you were trying to destroy.

tl;dr I dunno. Let's hope I never come upon a death note.

Seeing as nobody as smart as L exists in real life: I'd cover my tracks as best i could and basically do what Kira did, but on a world wide scale so that I'm harder to track.

No-one does, so we may as well have fun. Technically you wouldn't go to Heaven anyway because of your sexual preferences.
It's not referring to the Christian Heaven and Hell, but the Shinto one, which is more of a concept than anything else. Just sort of like 'Paradise' and well.. 'Hell'. So if there was a Death Note, there would at least be these concepts of 'Paradise' and 'Hell' and I'd rather not be trapped in the Shingami world, which I would be if I used the Death Note.

As for my sexual preferences.. Erm.. <.<
This thread idea sounds fun, but I've never watched whatever show this death note thing is from, so I don't know how it works (I assume you write a name and that person dies?) and I have no clue what the Shingami world is (if it isn't heaven or hell is it like a combination world, like earth except with immortality? or is it limbo where everything is neutrality forever or something?).

If I had a Deathnote, I would make use of it in a vengeful and often silly way. People who've turned against me would perish horribly, Bob Dylan would be impaled on his guitar, and certain people in charge of certain things in the world would uhh...vanish if they can't smoothe out the world's problems. Oh, and I believe this would be the end of unemployment for me. Find someone who owns a place and get them to hire me by saying they'll hire me before they end up dead.

I would burn it and then go on with my life, I got enough crap on my plate as is, i don't need a Deathnote to add to that.

Yeah. I don't think I'd make the mistake of killing someone just because they challenged me, though. That'd be kinda stupid.

I'd probably use it fairly often in private. There are just so many heartless bastards I see on the news every day. People raping children and beating the elderly to death. If I had a death note those people better hope their pictures are never posted that's all I have to say.

I'd do one of two actions. 1. Burn it and move on with life. Humanity does not need more suffering. Or 2. Gain Presidency and kill all enemies, osama, and corrupt world leaders.
to paraphrase Ryuk, 'then you'd be the only corrupt one left'

Well if the Deathnote is real doesn't that mean Hell and Heaven would definitely be confirmed as real and I can't go there if I use it? I haven't watched the anime in ages. Do you turn into a shinigami if you use the Deathnote? Honestly I've completely forgotten now, someone inform me.
first, there is no confermation of heaven or hell in the anime (some postulate the the 'can't go to heaven or hell' rule is sorta like a joke, and that Ryuk knew humans didn't go to either), tho its anyone's guess. and about becoming a shinigami, that was never stated in the anime, and because the place the person goes if they use the deathnote is Not named the same as the shinigami world (i think), then i doubt you become a shinigami

the shinigami world is basically a dark dank place in the sky where all these immortal death gods just sit around gambling, sounds pretty boring. and ok, the deathnote, (from the anime 'Deathnote',) is a notebook that who'sever name is written in it will die. however, you must know the persons name and face in order for it to work. you can also write how the person dies. thats all ou really need to know

EDIT: Personally, I would probably use it to try and make the world a better place by killing the wicked, the horribly corrupt, and the killers. however, part way through doing this I would probably realize that this is all going horribly wrong, and that my utopia shall never be real, because what I am doing would backfire in multiple waysd, both backfiring against me, and possibly society. only at this point I would be in too deep, having multiple agencies trying to kill me, and I had already done so much. so i would be forced to continue my work, just simply to make up for the mistake of ever starting it

Okay, I'd not use the deathnote except to save those I love (though I wonder, seeing as names are merely means of identification, couldn't you just write "Anyone who will cause severe harm to my loved one/family/significant other" then if you are ever around someone who will do that, you see their face and they instantly die, thereby preventing the harm of your loved one?

But yeah, I'd only use it to save loved ones (personally, the idea of heaven or hell are both terrible, if I had a choice of heaven, hell or a place filled with immortals too pre-occupied with gambling to bother me, then I'd choose the Shingami world any day.

I have a Death Note.
If it was real, like most people I'd imagine, I'd at leats test it to make sure.
Then I'd probably turn into a more amateurish Kira that would be caught easily.
I might even test some loopholes. For example, what if you write your own death in the Death Note, but write it in such a way that you'll live, unaging, for, say, 500 years? Just write "At the Age of 500, *Name Here* shall die painlessly in his sleep after having not aged past the body of a 30 year old." There, boom, instant elongated life and young body to use until than.
That's what L did in L change the world. He set his date for a certain day so he couldn't die until he had solved the case.

First response: ...Fuck.
Second: Hm, let's test this thing out, see if it works.
Third (assuming I didn't test on myself): HOLY MOTHERFUCKING CHRIST.
Time to trololol the entire planet.

Me + a Death Note = BAD IDEA.

Seriously, the world is rotten, but I think I'd be more like Mikami Teru than Light Yagami. I'm much more harsh to judge people. While Laziness, I can forgive, insolence and being a general unlikable mega twat might earn you cardiac arrest 40 seconds later.
o_O

Umm... do you define "mega twat" as someone who is scared stiff about what you just said?

Calumon: Ummm... Trade for cake?
Much better! :D

I define them as scum who make no effort to help humanity and would rather make people's lives a living hell. They aren't necessarily criminals, but some deserve the same fate. Also, I'd probably be tighter on criminals too. Deal Drugs? Delete. Murder? Delete. Went out to kill someone and failed but didn't have a good reason? Delete. Loan Shark? Delete. Rape? Delete. Take hostages? Delete. Paedophilia? Delete. Brutal Assualt? Delete. Delete. Delete! DELETE!
