So, you find a deathnote. What do you do with it? Do you choose to be like Light and put your own brand of justice on the world? do you use it once, regret it, and never use it again? do you use it to gain personal power and wealth? or something in between?

You can choose to respond with your own "Philosophy" or simply respond with some people who you wouldn't mind not being around anymore.

Also, if this topic or thread has been around a lot, please go easy... as you can tell by my posts im new here (and new to all forums, really...)

Btw, I would not use the deathnote. I couldn't live with the guilt of ending a person's life (unless my own life was in danger and even then it would haunt me)
I would use it to better the world as a whole. A lot of people suffer and die because of individuals who put themselves before the whole. Show people that they are under the gaze of something that can deal out justice no matter where they hide, and they are unwillingly to try. Most crimes are committed because people think that they can get away with it. And knowing that I am potentially saving more lives than I take away, my greater conscience would be clear. Kind of why I'm annoyed with Batman.

He claims to be the pinnacle of justice, but he lets people who constantly cause pain and death to innocents to live, simply because he thinks that be killing them brings himself down to their level. What bloody cowardice.

Be Kira.

Seriously, the world is rotten, but I think I'd be more like Mikami Teru than Light Yagami. I'm much more harsh to judge people. While Laziness, I can forgive, insolence and being a general unlikable mega twat might earn you cardiac arrest 40 seconds later.
o_O

Umm... do you define "mega twat" as someone who is scared stiff about what you just said
I define them as scum who make no effort to help humanity and would rather make people's lives a living hell. They aren't necessarily criminals, but some deserve the same fate. Also, I'd probably be tighter on criminals too. Deal Drugs? Delete. Murder? Delete. Went out to kill someone and failed but didn't have a good reason? Delete. Loan Shark? Delete. Rape? Delete. Take hostages? Delete. Paedophilia? Delete. Brutal Assualt? Delete. Delete. Delete! DELETE!

The first thing I'd do is begin a detailed investigation into what the original creator of the Death Note series did with his. Think about it: How would he know about death notes unless he had one himself. Since there are many shinigami each with their own deathnote, during the course of my investigation I would probably be drawn into an organization of people who obtained deathnotes who secretly rule the world. I would then try to rise to the top of the organization and reform it, because it's doing a sucky job.

I WOULD really like the shinigami eyes. I think my girlfriend would love me forever if I had them lol... but losing half your life would suck.

If I ever came across a Death Note I'd probably just think it was a fake notebook and throw it out.

There's also something a tad bit more serious I thought I'd point out.

As an atheist it's interesting to me to see how many of you wouldn't use the deathnote because the user can neither go to heaven nor hell.

Although its not really that surprising, if you believe in heaven and hell im sure you want to go to heaven and the idea of using a notebook which only has the function to kill people would kind of go against most moral systems in religion...

Still. Lets pretend here... theres a heaven and a hell, and I have a deathnote. if I kill one person i dont have to worry about going to hell for being a bad person, however I dont abtain paradise if im a good person. I would just cease to be and know nothing.

I might write in the name of one criminal on death row and then burn the notebook and as such, never worry about what happens after I die. It would be perfectly neutral and the way I live in life would matter only to me and my own sense of morality and decision making.

I know some of you would argue that heaven outweighs all, and simply being a good person in one simple lifetime is small in comparison to living forever.

But... I dont want to live forever. I dont. death is what makes life precious. Its what makes me love my girlfriend so much, knowing that one day I won't be able to even acknowledge her (or my own) existence. Life is short and can be cut off at any time. I wouldn't have the same sense of appreciation for beauty in art and nature either to be honest.

Sorry if that got preachy or out of hand.... I tend to over think things when I get ideas xD

*Glances back and forth between the Deathnote and an industrial-strength shredder...*
*Considers learning a lot more about politics*
*Glances again at the shredder*

In reality, the ability to kill someone, with or without repercussions, is not an effective vehicle for the sort of change I would like to make in the world. And focusing on individual lives and deaths is the sort of thinking that got us into most of the messes we are currently into. Honestly, a Deathnote isn't going to STOP something like genocide or human trafficking unless you kill a LOT of people. It's going to help even less with other issues like religious and political extremism and world hunger.

In the end, who am I to say who lives and who dies? And what's to say that the person I kill wasn't the lesser of the two evils vying for power? I might use the Deathnote if I could live up to Dexter's standards of evidence, and higher standard for predicting the outcomes of my kills.

REVISION: Oh, I would probably also kill off psycho/sociopaths indiscriminately. Those don't need to be in our gene pool. Incapacity to feel remorse and thus being completely uncompelled to be a productive member of society (in some cases wanting only to be a DESTRUCTIVE member of society) is something I, for one, can see no evolutionary purpose for in our species at this point.

Realise that I'm in the Death Note universe, and find Wammy's House to develope my already considerable powers of detection.

Okay, I keep reading that as "death hole" and I'm like "WAT"

Ummm.. deathnote... I'd probably be super skeptical at first and not believe it. Then, I'd get to that "what if/just in case" phase and test it or something, somehow. Then, supposing it proves real... I don't know that I could go through with actually using it. Really hard to say. Mind you, it keeps you from an afterlife, and that's lame, so... I'd probably discard it.

I'm gonna need a whole fucking lot of pencils.

And i'll use all my creative juice to make teh worlds biggest ass-holes pass away in the most hillarious way, so it's not only for justice and a better world, but also for the lulz.
