You find out how to time travel, do you tell anyone?

So you are working in a lab when suddenly it dawns on you how to time travel but do you tell anyone? What would you do make a business, sell it to terrorists? What?

Personally, I wouldn't tell a soul. I would probably be afraid someone would mess up in the past. If I could time travel then I would not go that far into the past maybe like a couple of years or weeks never out of my own lifetime. So what about you?

I'd use it to save the lives of the people I care about (and maybe win the lottery once or twice so that I can spend my life doing what I want, rather than what I need).

I'd take knowledge of modern computers and their manufacture back to the victorian era. Travel forward; Have holodecks... Claim cash from my patent of microprocessors.

Well I guess it is your choice how long you spent on it.
I'm just sayin', if it's taken years of research to uncover time travel then surely the first thing you would do is take the end result of all that research back to the time when the research started and save yourself some legwork.

Very true.

If you saved the lives of you loved ones by going back in time, then why would the "future" you go back in time at all? If you went back in time to win the lottery, the the future you wouldn't have a reason to go back because he's rich already.
Time paradoxes, they ruin all the fun.

On topic: Of course I wouldn't tell anyone.
The only reason time travel would be useful, however, is to travel to the future because you can't change the past.

But there is then also the whole issue of denying yourself the joy of discovery. Becoming a scientist is all about enjoying discovery and what greater joy could there be for a man (or woman) of science than discovering how to unravel and manipulate the foundations of the universe itself to allow travel beyond normal comprehension? :D

I suppose you could argue from the standpoint of a tangential universe. But in that scenario it is then not you who benefits directly. Also there is a school of thought; The lottery is random, so you travel forward, see the results, buy a ticket and wait... but you've changed something minute on the cosmic scale, as such the Lottery result is different. Such is the way of chaos theory.

Question.

Could you travel back to the past in a time there were no time machines? Or could you only travel between the moment you invented time travel and the infinite future?

If the first, I would probably tell nobody and destroy the damn thing, because paradoxes would definitely ensue, causing fractures in the time-space-continuum that could destroy existence. Just not worth it.

If the latter, I still wouldn't tell anyone (at least, at first I wouldn't), but I'd go check the future. First out of curiosity, but second, because I can see if and how time-travel affected the world.

But most of all, I'd be scared that - at the exact moment I invent the machine - someone from the future would appear out of freakin' nowhere. Why? Who knows! Possibly to kidnap me, kill me, protect me from other time-travelers who want to kill me?

Ah but then that requires a belief that time is constant and things are preordained. How do we know you just wouldn't create fractal universes when you alter something, or that maybe you're meant to go alter a specific event? But then that requires a belief in predestination, in which case, what's the point of time travel? Time is not a linear concept on a universal scale. :)

The only reason time travel would be useful, however, is to travel to the future because you can't change the past.
Well, time-travel would suggest that I would go back in time, rather than reversing time itself; so I wouldn't be changed, but there would be a second me (the past-me, who also knows that I can time-travel) to whom I can give knowledge of the alternate events, so he'd go back in time and do 'exactly' what I did (maybe not exactly, but as long as he tells me to do it in the same/similar way I told him, then eventually events would balance out with a static chain of events). So my timeline would simply look like

-------------->
.............<----
.............--------------> ... etc

So my first back-travel would result in the nullification of the reason I back-travelled, but also the creation of another reason which has the same effect, meaning no paradoxes (according to my own timeline, but then again, Dr. Who would like a word with you about the linearity of time).

EDIT: Then again, time-travel would give the strongest evidence for the multi-verse theory.

Unless you conform to Terry Pratchett's theory of time travel, that is...

Go forward in time so as to get it modded for flight and invisibility, then go back in time, and observe the crap out of everything. Everything.
