Ok sorry about that I keep on forgetting the enter does not being me down to the other text box, tab next time Jesse tab!!!

any how, mo whole life i kept on being told that playing video games are bad for you, they make you stupid, they ruin social lives and all of that kind of crap

Now that I do a giant research project (70 pages) on the subject it seems to have nothing wrong with it and more and more its becoming better for every kind of health be it physical (the Wii and Dance dance and such) mental (historical games, puzzle games) social (growing gamming community, MMOs)

I find it quite annoying that people more to note parents keep on stopping their kids from playing video games, it makes us smarter and more fit if you play the right games

Now for the actual question, do you find gamer haters irritating and why do you think they say that games are bad for our health

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt... although the name of the title does'nt give him very much hope to open an intellectual conversation

It's not so much people who say Games make you stupid and ruin social lives (with the exception of MMORPG's). No for me, it's the people who say video games make you steal cars and kill people.

Yeah, I get annoyed. But posting an article on how wrong they are is a bit stupid. None of them are going to read it, I mean, how many gamer-haters have an account on a gaming forum?

this might not exactly be the place to post that. If you're aiming for anything but a pat on the back

First of all, congrats on completing the research paper.

Second, while it is true that videogames are good for you, so is wine and beer- in the proper amounts. Otherwise it destroys your liver. Thus, like any thing, it requires a delicate touch and application.

How does gaming destroy your liver?

Haven't you heard? If you play enough PacMan, he comes out and eats your liver :p

The best bit is that my dad is forever ripping into me for playing games, using the usual "you spend all day in your room" (which is a lie) bullshit. He brought a dexterity game thingy home from work (supposed to help typists get thier wpm up) and I kicked the living daylights out of him for about 10 minutes solid, when he "accidentally" ripped the powerlead out.

I am so damn tired of these threads. And I've been on here for what, a week?

So I've decided I'm just going to keep quoting what I've already written.

I'd really like to see someone come in here and say "gamer haters are right" and give some reasons. As several people have already stated, asking a bunch of gamers whether games are bad isn't really going to get you anywhere. I think this guy put it best:

What Apocalypse Tank (awesome name) is saying is that you are asking a bunch of gamers if they think games are bad. That's like asking a Christian if they think Christianity is stupid. It's pointless.
To continue, this issue has been discussed to death, especially on gaming forums. I don't even need the search function to tell you there are probably 17 other threads in which this has already been discussed, with all of the same points being brought up: games have ratings for a reason, parents need to raise their kids instead of letting technology do it, video games are just the current scapegoat of society. While I agree with all of these points, the fact is that we're shooting paper targets; nobody here is going to argue the other side. Hell, The Escapist itself has many, many articles on this stuff already.

To conclude, this argument is more cliched than The Escapist's favorite collective punching bag, space marines. Let's go discuss something that people on here might actually have varied opinions about.

Go McCain!
(Edited for the sake of context)

Oh, and yeah, I love it when people bash my hobby. Makes me feel good. /sarcasm

Just because video games don't turn you into an antisocial killing machine doesn't mean that there aren't millions of better ways to spend your time. Gaming can be perfectly healthy as a hobby, but it most certainly can be unhealthy if you're a "hardcore" gamer.

If I had a kid, I'd restrict his game time, because I'd want him to cultivate some interests that were more creative or intellectual. It's better than watching TV all the time, but seriously, get some exercise, learn to play an instrument, do something that's the least bit stimulating every once in a while.

I regret spending so much time (and money - Jesus, I don't even want to think about it) on video games when I was younger. People need to understand that it's just a fun hobby; it shouldn't be the reason that you do the other things you need to.

Games don't make you more fit than doing sports.
Games don't make you smarter than reading books.
And if you need games to have a social life then there's something wrong with you and/or your friends.

Games are entertainment, just like movies and songs and tons of other things.

But I agree with you that the whole "games destroy your life" thing is very annoying.
People should rather focus on the effects of (too much) entertainment on society and not treat games like they're something special. But studies on entertainment have been done before a zillion times with no real outcome (IMO).
Besides, even the most ancient and primitive civilizations had some sort of entertainment.
Maybe that's the reason they vanished?
