So I got a new laptop after breaking my old one accidently, and have decided to reinstall Oblivion -- one of my favourite RPGs ever.

I insert my perfectly legit disc...

**You are trying to start a copy-protected application which requires the original disc to be in the CD/DVD-ROM drive. SecuROM? has determined that you used a copy instead of the original disc.**

No. NO. NO!

You are Wrong.

Any time when technology has "determined" that you're using illegal discs/whatever when you're not?

Urgh, yeah

I have a habbit of buying second hand, so, I guess a lot of them could actually be illegal
discs, but they look authentic, and they work authentic, and half the time it's only my computer that deems they are NOT authentic, but, I really can't say that it's wrong I guess...

One thing springs to mind actually, I bought Spore (beacuse of the hype I swear!) from amazon, came new, srink wrapped and smelling of factory, boom, try and install, and my 3 (or was it 5?) installs had been used.... I tell you, getting a refund was really really hard.

It was probably because of other people using keygens.

OT: Yeah, it's happened to me before, though I honestly can't recall which game it was with.

Wow, that's really sucks... :( Well, if all else fails, go pirate a copy. THAT'LL TEACH 'EM TO SCREW ME OUT OF MY GAME! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Well, you could call tech support and make them fix it, or send you a new game... or you'll go and blow their office buildings up...

I'm probably being less than helpful...

I like steam because it doesn't use CDs :D

But that is bullshit. I think it's legal to pirate a copy if you already own the game, however.

wasnt bad if you got refunded, now imagine you still had an install and you used and then found out the game was shit and couldnt sell it anymore?!

That is true, I ended up getting one of my friends installs, and a 75% refund, so, ehh not so bad.

This reminds me of the time my PS2 played up big style. The disc reader, when fed any of my newer games, stubbornly persisted in informing me that the disc was not formatted for use with a PS2. It was quite happy to play the older games I had, but none of the newer ones. It nearly made me cry with frustration, made worse because it cropped up when I was part way through an RPG which I was enjoying.

OT: I have had this happen with a newly bought game from the shop for my PC, the game telling me that the code had already been used to register another game. I can't remember which though, so it obviously wasn't very good when I finally did get it going.

Alot of copy protection systems arnt happy about drives that write, or decide only to work on one drive if you have multiple.

Had it happen once, made an ISO of the disc and never got the error again.

I'm actually playing a cracked version of KotOR right now. The strange thing is, that when I originally installed it, I had now problem running the game. Yet, when I downloaded a patch, my disc was no longer "legit". Fuck you Securom. It's legit.

erms, get the securom removal tool,
oblivion doesn't come with securom =S
Shivering Isles comes with it and the SecuRom removal tool does not completely remove SecuRom(some parts remain in the registry).
Also, if you have games that use SecuRom, playing them without a properly cracked .exe automatically reinstalls SecuRom. The worst is that SecuRom is hidden in the registry so there's no "easy" way of completely removing it.
