So, I just had another post on something else and it got me thinking. When I voiced my inherent dislike for Inception, I received a lot of people who just shouted "Watch it again, you didn't understand it!" when I was able to summarise the plot just as well as they could.

So, I was wondering, how do people not think this is a completely bullshit argument for when you can't come up with anything better? Saying "you don't understand" is not only insulting someone's intelligence, but it's also just coming across as a pretentious douche.

This also happened to me upon saying I didn't particularly like Fight Club. It got me a lot of criticism from my friends, which was a bit uncalled for. Just because I don't like something does not mean I didn't understand it. Yeah, the guy was just insane and had split personalities, so flipping what? It wasn't very entertaining at all. The acting was good, yeah, but I just thought the movie overall was lacking in the entertainment factor.

So, why must people continue to use this argument, when it's clearly just a complete cop-out which blatantly shows their lack of ability to even put forward a reasonable reason for why I should like something?
