5. Medieval 2 Total War (best big scale strategy to date, especially with mods)
6. Rome Total War ( game that was best big scale etc before m2tw)
7. Empire Earth (best RTS for long LAN-nights)
8. Civilization IV Beyond the Sword (best turn-based big scale game)
9. Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion (best space 4X for me)
10. FreeSpace 2 Open (best space sim + story combination)
11. Mount&Blade: Warband (best knight simulator probably )
12. UFO: Aftermath (I love this game both for setting and for gameplay)
13. UFO: Aftershock (this game could have been great, only good as is, but still one of my favourites)
14. XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012) (I see myself returning to this a lot)
15. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl (best survivalish sandboxish thingie)
16. Team Fortress 2 (best multiplayer experience, period)
17. Planetside 2 ( BF3 done right + dat scale)
18. Magicka ( original, funny, has coop. has issues, but duh)

[]The Unreal Tournament series - For being a non-MMS that is barrels of fun and constantly reminds me that, "yes, I am still pretty good at shooters!"
[]The Quake series (barring Quake 4) - For, again, being a non-MMS that is barrels of fun and introducing me into the world of shooters.
[]The Serious Sam series - Guess what? It's a non-MMS that is barrels of fun, and has games in the series that are actually modern, causing me to weep for today's shooters just a tad less.
[]Pokemon Emerald - For being the only Pokemon game I ever had. And Pokemon as a series is pretty great, so I'm kind of limited.
[]FTL: Faster Than Light - For being unrelentingly difficult yet surprisingly addictive.
[]The Touhou series - For being a very polished bullet hell game that is actually on my laptop rather than a damn console! >.>
[]The Half-Life series - ....Come on.
[]Terraria - For showing me that Minecraft in 2D works AND can be loads of fun.
[]Minecraft - For being as ground-breaking as it was, for me.
[]World of Goo - Holy-shit-the-music-on-the-Epilogue-level-select-screen. And the music everywhere else. Oh, and it was a really cool puzzle game.
[]The Walking Dead - Mmm, lovely lovely story-telling and pacing... mmm, tastes like chicken. (Or perhaps more accurately, horse. )
[]Team Fortress 2 - For being a shooter that showed me that teamwork AND a common objective can work in a pub-based game.
[]Sonic Generations - Just... look at the Sky Sanctuary level from Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Now look at it from Sonic Generations. First thought? Mine was 'holy shit Death Egg in proper ace 3D!!'
[]League of Legends - For being a MOBA that actually runs on my laptop.
[]Super Meat Boy - For its difficulty. And its soundtrack. And the level editor.
[]Portal 2 - ...You know this.
[]Dustforce - For being incredibly similar to SMB, and completely destroying my doubts about 'fighting in a precision platformer breaking the flow'.
[]Time Kcuf (or Time Fcku; Time Ckuf; Time Kfcu etc.) - For being a flash game that I think has a wonderful concept, a wonderful story, and a style (just listen to the music) that really just... I don't know. It's just really weird but when you think about it, it's really quite a game that makes sense.
[]The Chocolatier series - For being a 'casual' game that was actually a load of fun. It lacked polish, but w/e, making chocolate, maaan.
[]TrackMania United Forever - The editor is a glorious beast. GLORIOUS.

Hmm. The only issue I see with this approach is the fact that shooter fans are have a dozen shooters on the list, JRPG fans are gonna have a dozen JRPGs, Nintendo fans are gonna etc. Not sure how to fix that, anyway, but the lists are going to vary wildly and you'll need a huge sample size to get valid results.
