"20. Escape Velocity: Nova (I vaguely remember replaying it and discovering it to be awful, which is why it's so far down on the list, but the memory of playing it for the first time almost ten years ago and loving it is more clear, hence its inclusion at all)"

The games awesome, you just got to give it some time, its real dark and lack luster, and NAEV does everything game play wise but better. however the written dialog is one of the most surprisingly compelling "wall of text" I've ever experienced. probably why you remember it better than it is at just a glance.
-----------------------------------------------------

I love Oddworld, so much so that i bought the concept art book, but i think i only like the setting/beautiful art-stile.
the actual game play is rather boring, and only worth the time to see how creative and truly odd the world is.

same kinda goes for sonic adventures 1/2

----------------------------------------------------

Morrowind is the best game out of the elder scrolls series , I think to be truly objective in ratings you need to look at things in context. If Bethesda made morrowind with the same technology at there disposal they have now, i think it would be better than skyrim in everybody's book. its just a vastly more interesting and divers setting and story. plus it didn't have a damn 30 min tutorial.

-----------------------------------------------------

I like Mass Effect, but I don't think they ever knew what they wanted too do with it. so each version feels like its full of half ideas.

plus they never added a flying in space x-series/freelancer stile meta-game that the game was basically begging to have.

I can only assume they didn't because some law was passed banning triple A game developers from making space games after the pore sales of Freespace 2.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kingdom hearts 2 would have made my list, except for the fact it had that HORRIBLE Little Mermaid quick-time thing. I've never been so afraid to be seen playing a game in my life.

Jeez... a top 20? Usually it's like... 5. Alright, here goes nothing. For series that I love, I'm only going to pick the game that I like most since otherwise my entire list would be populated by only like two or three series. No particular order-

1. Deus Ex
2. System Shock 2
3. Fallout 2 ( <- love the whole series)
4. Jagged Alliance 2
5. Dead Space 2 ( <- love all three)
6. Resident Evil (REmake) ( <- love most of the main series)
7. StarCraft ( <- love both so far)
8. Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun ( <- love everything up to RA2)
9. UN Squadron
10. Zombies Ate My Neighbors
11. Perfect Dark
12. Dead Rising 2 ( <- love both)
13. Max Payne
14. Portal 2 ( <- love both)
15. The Walking Dead
16. City of Heroes/City of Villains
17. Mass Effect 2 ( <- love all three)
18. Earthbound
19. Diablo 2
20. Metal Gear Solid ( <- love the whole series)

I apparently enjoyed a lot of part 2's.

1) Baldur's Gate 1 (Only game I can feel safe calling "flawless")
2) Morrowind (Unmatched immersion factor... makes me feel like I'm actually adventuring in a magical realm; unbounded freedom)
3) Fallout 2 (Makes you feel like you're really in the unforgiving wasteland... I liked FO3 but FO2 was more successful at capturing that mood)
4) Final Fantasy Tactics (Nothing in particular, just a really damn good game)
5) Mount and Blade: Warband (It's amazing how fun and satisfying a game can be with such a small budget and such a basic idea).

Ok... everything past here is a bit hard to rank... so it'd probably be in somewhat of an arbitrary order

6) Earthbound (closely tied to my childhood... evokes the feeling of going out adventuring as a kid, but I still find the game very enjoyable)
7) Secret of Evermore (Similar to EB. Also imo the most underrated game ever)
8) Mega Man X (Still the best platformer out there)
9) Baldur's Gate 2 (Not as good as BG1 but a damn fine game anyways)
10) Ogre Battle (Still have not seen any other game with this excellent formula... seriously, wtf?)
11) Minecraft (more for the fun times I had with it in SMP than for the quality of the game itself...)
12) Mother 3 (Most emotionally crushing game I've ever played. It's a shame they deemed the American public unfit to consume/enjoy this product)

Man, it's hard to figure out what should and shouldn't make the 20 cut after the first few...

13) King's Bounty: Armored Princess (Tremendously fun, although niche, game. A shame it's not more well known)
14) Jets n' Guns (prolly should go higher... likely to be the second most underrated game of all times, second to SoE)
15) Rayman Origins (Best attempt at a quality platformer since the SNES days, imo. I admit though, I have not yet played Super Meat Boy)
16) Heroes of Might and Magic III (Just a good game, I dunno. They really dropped the ball hard after this one though).
17) One of the two Icewind Dale games should prolly go somewhere here...
18) FF6 (My favorite non-Tactics FF game. Excellent game that holds up well).
19) Possibly FTL... surely the most recent game I enjoyed a lot. Got me into a brand new genre of games.
20) Majesty (Most unique game in this list probably. I frequently boot it up for a quick run between games.)

Honestly there are probably games that should make the list more than the ones listed here... but I'm most likely forgetting some key ones, especially from the PS2... hmm... maybe Disgaea should be there. Eh, whatever, there's your list.

There's no way in Hell I can put these in a numerical order so I'll just group these by...franchise I guess. Possible genre but lets see where my brain takes this.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Zelda 2: Adventures of Link

Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Pokemon Soul Silver

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Ninja Gaiden
Saint's Row 2
Super Mario World
Voodoo Vince

Duke Nukem 3D
Fallout 3

Dynasty Warriors 3
Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage
Otogi: Myth of Demons

Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge

these are grouped into Zelda Games, JRPGs, Adventure/Action kinda things, FPS titles (technically), Beat-em-up spectacle fighters and, a flight combat game.

Aw jeez... This is gonna be tough.

1. Persona 4/ Persona 4: Golden
2. Team Fortress 2
3. Portal 2
4. The Binding of Isaac
5. Fallout 3

The last 5 for the top 10 are these games.
Persona 3/P3P/Fes
Red Dead Redemption
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Pokemon Diamond

And then the rest are the just the result of me being too indecisive to choose.
Disgaea (They're all pretty much the same, so the whole series)
Bioshock
Journey
Rayman Origins
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Far Cry 3
Kingdom Hearts II
Borderlands 2
DotA 2

I think the amount of data here is interesting and plentiful enough tow here I'm going to have to do all kinds of things with it. (For instance, certain games that are frequently in people's top 3, but didn't have enough total mentions to make the final list, showing some of the most polarizing titles, etc.)

There are also a number of games showing that it seems like are not very many people's favorites, but pretty much everyone likes them. Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock, Portal to name a few.
