I didn't really grow up with nintendo, sega or the early pc heyday, so I guess this list is tilted towards more recent games, but nonetheless, these are the games I enjoy to this day. also, if I had been allowed, the Mass Effect Trilogy as a whole would have occupied the number one spot, leaving room for one more game: Portal.

Hmmm Hard to say, I've played so many good games. My list would probably wind up looking something like this:

Wasteland
Wizardry Bane Trilogy (Bane Of The Cosmic Forge, Crusaders Of The Dark Savant, Wizardry 8)
Ultima (series)
Master Of Magic
Alpha Centauri
Civilization (series)
Fallout (series)
Warlords Battlecry 3
Shin Megumi Tensei (series)
The World Ends With You
Final Fantasy (VI through X)
Sacred 2
World Of Warcraft
Star Wars: Galaxies
Star Trek Online
The Secret World
Quest For Glory (series)

Those are games off the top of my head I really loved/love, it can be more or less than 20 depending on how you want to break down series. As much as I like a lot of other series like say "Silent Hill" I can't really bring myself to give them a "best of all time" recommendation, sort of like the "Tales" games. Likewise, I play a lot of top down, action RPGs, however despite it's problems I think "Sacred 2" did more to move that type of game along than any other game out there, to the point where I've simply been disappointed by games like "Diablo 3" and "Torchlight" for not having been able to do as much. Prior to Sacred 2 my favorite would have been "Divine Divinity" for similar reasons, but I think Sacred 2 managed to do even better.

Its funny, you can tell how old somebody is by there list.

It makes me sad that so few of the younger generation have played anything besides modern games.

Its kinda the same as being a movie buff, and never seeing anything made before 2003....

I understand It can be hard, since there was no bloom effect, bumpmaping, or havoc physics.
so if you don't own a pair of nostalgia goggles, Its hard too get into them.
the only way to really appreciate old games is to dedicate some time to just playing ps1 era games for like a month.
Only then can you see things in context.

But its worth it.
And at the very least ,when you get back ,you'll have a deeper appreciation for all the technology and work that went into rendering the MWCODBO2 Newbs head that you just Pw0ned as you t-bag it.
This is true, but can older gamers appreciate new games too or is it always nostalgia that takes priority? I've seen some antiquated top 20 lists out there (not so many here, seems more balanced).

Thing is, there's so many games coming out there's no time to go back. You're bombarded with better graphics, more realistic physics and when it comes to picking up a 20 year old pixellated game that hasn't been hyped as the latest thing, we aren't interested. Until we actually DO pick it up and realize there's some brilliant stuff out there.

That was harder than it should have been...

It's been three days, I'm not trying to push the OP or anything but I'm really curious about the outcome of this whole thing...kind of a reminder that this thread exists and had an overall purpose I guess.

Interesting idea...I'll see if I can even remember half of the games I used to play way back when.

No particular order here:

Final Fantasy Tactics
Quake 3 Arena
Killing Floor
Sonic 2
Intelligence Qube
Fallout 3
Killer Instinct
XIII
Bastion
Final Fantasy VII
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit
Super Mario Brothers 3
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Portal
Donkey Kong Country
Bayonetta
Terraria
Bioshock
Hitman: Blood Money
and...Spec Ops: The Line

I would put Amnesia on here, but I'm a giant baby when it comes to horror games and my save file is literally my character on a box in the water portion. I've loaded it up a few times and just stared for a bit before wimping out and playing something else. It's a fantastic game, but I've yet to finish it so I can't really throw it on the list without seeing the whole thing.

OP?! OP...OP!!!!!!!!
I'm starting to think he was actually a clever spambot who has collected our lists of top 20 games so that he can advertise to us personally.

OP, I would like to let you know that this was a waste of time! No amount of ad revenue could justify the effort your ruse took, seriously, what were you thinking!

[small]Although I would be very happy to see what games you'd advertise to me based on my list, actually please do this, I need more games like those on my top 20.[/small]
