It completely sucked for games, but at least I got a relatively decent job as part of my university course's placement, which will hopefully lead to a permanent position after graduating. It wasn't a bad year in all, not much really happened.

There was a lot of really good music put out this year and I've successfully staved off death for another year on the positive front. On the negative...I don't really want to think about it and I seriously doubt you want to hear it. >.> Still don't have a job, that much I will say and seriously need to work on.

The good? I got a hell load better at Chess and knowing the insides of a computer. The bad? One of the only females who knew me well moved. :-(

I do hope to go meet her someday.:)

Other than that, 2012 was just another year in the passing. At least I'm not dead.

Pros:
Great games like the Walking Dead and Journey are released.
Had two great semesters in college and a nice relaxing summer.

Cons:
Mass Effect 3's ending being a complete sack of shit and pretty much tainting the entire franchise with a sense of "What's the use replaying the games, if they all lead towards the 3 endings that, extended cut or not, still pay no heed to the choices you make?"

I still haven't married Emma Watson.
Consider yourself fortunate. Have a proper look up on her.

She's an arrogant, self centered *****.

Kind of like how Kirsten Dunst went. She was a young actress and thinks, because she got a few good roles, she's far better than she actually is.

Go for Natalie Portman, rescue her from shitty love scenes with god awful actors.

I expected this thread to be a shitty one, but holy shit, I really like your guy's stories.

Pros-
Did the first two meaningful things in my entire life.
Discovered an unnecessary amount about myself.
Overcame a number of my fears, largely to do with other people.
Wrote a fucking book.
Got a drivers license, fell in love with driving.
Voted
Spec Ops the line, Hotline: Miami, DOTA 2, Black Mesa, Max Payne 3, Avengers, Nicholas Winding Refn and Steve McQueen getting big budgets.

Bad-
Aunt got cancer
Book mostly shit
Realized I honestly dislike most other people
Still looked down upon by most of my family
Didn't find god

Overall-
Careful optimism, like most of the other guys here 2011 was a really bad year. Hit my lowest point new years eve last year and recovering from there.
I may have met my first girl, but even with that I'm cautious, I have no idea what 2013 has for em but it may top every other year of my life.

YOu guys have no idea how much better your stories have made me feel. Best of luck to everyone n the new year and hold out, things will get better.

I'll do a reverse.

THE BAD:
-Treatment of a family illness was delayed by lots of red tape and looking for "alternative causes" because no doctor wanted to look the likely cause in the face...
-I got very few new games this year...
-I got fatter...
-I had the worst boss ever...
-Family tensions have gotten significantly more tense...
-Work cut a whole bunch of hours on me...

THE GOOD:
-...but we finally got treatment lined up!
-...but the two I got, FTL and XCOM, are both magnificent!
-...but I also got stronger and healthier somehow!
-...but he got fired spectacularly and now the manager is more manageable!
-...but I've figured out how to reduce the familial tensions!
-...but they then called me and offered them back, piece by piece, and then some!

THE TERRIBLE:
-I finally sat down and crunched my budget.

...

THE GREAT:
-I blew through this semester with a 3.7 GPA. That's an A-. I would have been delighted with a B.
-I got admitted to the "How To Find A Real Job This Summer, Here, Let Me Help You" course at tech school!

OVERALL:
I'm greatly pleased, most of the bad was negated as the year progressed.

PROJECTION:
Budget + Same low-paying suckish job until summer + can only work weekends = Ohhhhhh noooooooooo...

The Good:
I've finally begun typing out the book I've been conceptualizing for the past two years.
Played some really excellent games.
Still occasionally have fun-times with my on-again off-again ex-girlfriend.
Started chatting with all the bros in the Brovengers.
Finally got a new amp so I can play my electric guitar again.
Game Grumps began!

The Bad:
Still occasionally have fun-times with my on-again off-again ex-girlfriend.
Had to get glasses.
Was in a terrible relationship with a girl who constantly cheated on me.
Shattered my nostalgia-goggles on Sonic Adventure 2.
The forum cycles that this website goes through.

The Ugly:
I'm not sure, I just had to make the reference.

Overall:
I've had worse years. Better, too, but nothing to really complain about.

It's been....a rocky year. On the one hand I finally seemed to have got a stable job for a while, on the other hand, my private life took a rather nasty hit, and having seen it coming didn't really soften the impact.

Oh yeah and I started playing chess again. And thanks to my job, I now understand the rules of gridiron football and baseball (baseball is actually rather neat). And, well, huh, I turned 30. Round number. Scary. Another decade of my life is over, gone for good.

All in all, the year went by rather fast. Every next year is goes by faster...

Good
Graduated, got a respectable 2:1.
Went on an awesome holiday this summer with some friends
Started a masters course so i've got another year in higher education
Gained new friendship circles having started my masters
Got a good scholarship for my masters, saving me a bomb of money.

Bad
Went through a personal crisis early in 2012 because it didn't know what i wanted to do in life
Still don't really know what i want to do with my life
Masters course is bloody difficult, and a lot of it's not that interesting
Still single
Did a crappy work placement this summer, didn't get much from it.
One of my friendship circles at home broke up
The marriage between my parents is rather strained
Didn't get the 1st i was aiming for
Some health issues have cropped up late this year

***

In sum 2012 as been a sightly disappointing year for me, so i'm hoping 2013 turns out to be better, it will have to be pretty crap to beat 2012 that's for sure. Fortunately i think i'm largely out of the woods with regards to the more difficult and boring stuff on my masters course, the next term looks a bit easier. New Years Resolution will be to start jogging once i've finished my January exams, maybe a bit of exercise will do my mood some good. I'm cautiously optimistic about the coming year.

The good:
- Got through with my military service as a medic, even got a promotion, and found new friends
- The Avengers
- Finally getting into Game of Thrones (literally in the last few days, and boy, was it worth it)
- Finding Studio Ghibli films, my newest passion. I'm going to start playing piano because of Joe Hisaishi's music
- Getting a place to study against all my expectations, and even better, I actually like it
- The news that Muse was coming to my country, and later the news that Muse was coming AGAIN next summer (got mah tickets ready...)
- A couple of training camps during my military service were really great and relaxing. I almost miss them.
- Got back into writing after a long time, just stuff mostly for myself

The bad:
- Had to spend 9 months of my life in military service
- Going to actually see Muse. The show was absolutely fantastic, but I had the shittiest seating in the entire arena which houses 5000+ people
- The fact that I still haven't started my school project which is due in less than 2 weeks
- Still no girlfriend, though I'm not sure if I even care at the moment
- Trying to watch 300 again. Tiredness, a shitty movie and absinthe don't mix. I ended up vomiting on my friend's floor.
- One military camp in early April was one of the shittiest experiences of my life

That's about the most of it.

The good

Graduated from college.
Got a decent job.
Slowly getting into shape. Seriously, I'm expecting a sixpack by the end of summer.

The bad

My GF dumped me after 6 years together.
I'm still forced to live with my parents because all my spare income goes into their mortgage (I don't want them to lose their house) so I can't afford a place of my own.
My dad nearly went blind and had to undergo eye surgery.
My mom got cancer.
Then my dad got cancer, likely terminal.
Most of my friends sided with my GF after the breakup, leaving me with a gutted social circle.
The job I got has nothing to do with my university education, meaning it was a complete waste of time.
A ton of other small things.

Overall

It has been the worst year of my life. I realized that the past 6 years were a total waste, since I spent them with a girl who left me at the first sign of trouble, friends who abandoned me as soon as I became inconvenient and studying completely useless crap. Now both of my parents are seriously ill, one of them is unlikely to survive more than a year. I'm constantly broke and on the verge of losing the roof over my head despite working my ass off.

The only thing that keeps me going is the fact that my job is really nice (junior librarian at a university library) and a few friends that stuck by me. Other than that, life's shit.
Aw man... that sounds terrible. Keep on going, don't give up!

Trying to get in shape. About to do the treadmill. I'll never, ever, under any circumstance short of science fiction, have a six pack though. Good luck with that!

The bad

My GF dumped me after 6 years together.
There was a recent broo ha about a woman columnist in her 40s, beautiful, smart, educated, monied, but unmarried and childless. She broke up a perfectly good relationship at 28 because it was getting too serious and she thought she had plenty more time to have fun.

All you can do is get back on the horse, so to speak.

I'm still forced to live with my parents because all my spare income goes into their mortgage (I don't want them to lose their house) so I can't afford a place of my own.
Sounds like they live with you. You might want to speak to a lawyer about financial arrangements and the future. Depending on where you live and the law, it may be in their interest to transfer title to the home to you, and you start building an adult life there. There's nothing unusual about the young housing their parents like this. (My inlaws came to live with me. They had a happy and comfortable last 10 years of their lives. Died about 2 years apart. RIP).

Downside: getting a GF serious while you have such a serious thing going on. Upside: you would be landed, look responsible, potentially a good catch for such a girl, and best of all, you could be called Esquire!)

That you have a job that seems steady and you like is huge too.

As for me:

The Bad:

I bought too many games I'll never finish.
I had a stroke that will impair me for the rest of my life.
I feel stuck at my current job
My boy is making graduating school this year a real suspense story!
My wife is working too many long hours
Obama won re election. We're screwed.

The good:

Some games were fantastic. I am totally hooked on Skyrim with cheats and mods. I'm at about 140 hours!
The stroke does leave me feeling a little drunk most of the time.
My current job aint bad. At least I have it.
My boy is on path to graduate high school this year!!!
My daughter is near perfect. Damn her :)
Wife loves her job.
Breaking Bad has just been fantastic.
I got new home office furniture that makes it more like a home theater.

Gotta go do treadmill. Happy New Year all!

- Plenty of good movies this year (Hobbit, 007, Batman, Avengers...)

The Bad

Overall

2012 was a pretty solid year. In 2013 I would like to see improvements in my romantic life, as well as in my physical health.

2012 was an interesting year:

The Good Parts of it:

1) Successfully finished the First Year of Medicine, and I did better than I thought.
2) Saw some great films
3) Became more confident of my appearance, allowing myself to actually consider something other than a life-time of crushing loneliness and work.
4) Learned a lot and actually made some friends, to some extent.
5) Played a lot of great games this year
6) Got a lot of interesting books
7) Got to walk around a hospital interviewing patients and performing really basic clinical exams, but it was a great experience and I actually managed to help some people (in a very, very limited way).

The Bad Parts of it were... pretty bad:

1) The Stress in studying for medicine is immense
2) My parents marriage almost dissolved a bunch of times and it got extremely, painfully ugly.
3) Trouble with relatives
4) I became infatuated with someone who did not feel the same way about me, and I had to just learn to let her go. She's happier with another person, and I had to admit that.

So the year was successful for me on a work/study basis, but personally it was very stressful.
