I know it's already been specified in the OP that the situation involves an invasion not a war of aggression, but there was something I read once about drafts that I would love to introduce in the UK.

If there is to be a war and it involves a hostile invader then a straight up draft but if it involves a foreign war, then have a public vote. Only those eligable for drafting gets to vote. If the votes say yes, then go to war and draft everyone who voted yes immediately. If more soldiers are needed, draft the ones who were eligable but didn't vote. Finally draft the ones who voted no if more ae needed.

I can't remember where I read about this system but it sounds like a system that, if a draft were ever to be instated, would be both fair and ensure politicians cannot abuse it easily.

Idiot.
care to explain why he is an idiot?
I could but I'm lazy so I'll just say that his comment is a stupid childish thoughtless brain fart that isnt in any way grounded in reality. It is also a dengerous sentiment that if enough people had we'd turn into a war nation. Depending on which nation you maybe from, this being the internet and all, you may already be a war nation. *Shrugs*
"Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious" - Oscar Wilde.
Dont think I quoted that quite right but its close enough.
I'm not having a go or anything, but does it have to be patriotism to fight for yor country to preserve it's history and culture, Even if you don't like the country you don't want it to get stomped out. I'm not saying war is good, but to save your country you might have to declare war.
Is culture and history worth the lives of people? I dont think so. Freedom yes. No one wants to be subjugated. Freedom is one of the few things that I would fight for. But not for some pathetic sentimental ideal that our countries history and culture must be protected at all costs.
without culture and history your country will lose it's identity, it will just become a area called (whatever the country is)
Certainly CUlture and history are wonderful things. Their just not worth going to war over. You may as well go to war over a stupid piece of artwork or something.
Yes yes, go ahead and kill in my name the artist is thinking from his grave. I'm fine with that. Go ahead and kill women and children (Cause you know damn fine that it happens, dont try to deny it) I'm fine with it. Really.
lol! I think you have the wrong end of this thread. I'm saying protecting your country from invasion, As in you stay in your country and fend off whoever is trying to invade not going out and bludgening everything you see.

*sigh* You don't Understand two things. Firstly: I'm Israeli, that changes my situation abit.
Secondly: You, and most of this site confuse patriotism and agreeing with the goverment. I HATE the current Israeli goverment, Netaniyau can go stick his head in the ground for all I care, but I have respect for my country.
I know what you mean, I don't like the current government, but my land is worth fighting for.

Hell yes. I would fight for Britain if we were to be invaded. People did not die in the past to give us the freedom we have today only to see our freedom disappear. people complain in developed countries about today but these 50 odd years have been really good for us. However if we were to invade another country first for what looks like no apparent reason i would have to see the reasons why first.

I wouldn't join the army, I'd get my own gun and start an underground resistance.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

How about the situation of invading to prevent invasion of England?

Bwaha, defending Austria from invasion is like defending a peanut from a horde of squirrels. So no, I wouldn't sign up. Infact, I reckon there wouldn't even be enough time to sign up until our army is blown apart.
But insurgency... now that sounds like fun!

..."escapsee's" is "escapee is"; should be "escapees"...

I was sitting here watching military history channel and as usual i would daze of thinking about if i was in that war and whether i would survive and it and so on. (does anybody else do that?)

But the real question i propose to you is, If your country was in crisis would you sign up for the army?

I mean as in threat of invasion. Like the nazi's were thinking of invading england. I would definetly sign up! as i would feel a sense of pride in trying to protect my family and friends by fending of the savage beasts!
No. I think I could do more good in research, or teaching, or in support. I'm not a fighter. I'm the mastermind.

Thanks for correction, trying to improve on my grammar :)

And yeah it's like i said to a fellow member, you don't have to be a soldier to protect your country. I said you could be in radio ops relaying orders and enemy positions to generals in bunkers and soldiers on the frontline, because if they don't know what's going on they can't formulate or modify defensive plans or where to push and where to reinforce.

Eh, I just don't have the mentality of blind obedience required for the military. (And truly, it something you need. You can't be questioning orders at the wrong time).

But I'd definitely go buy a shotgun and protect my home and neighbors.

Yeah i still would fight. I was thinking of writing that but couldnt be bothered, but for some reason i can now. We invaded Nazi Germany to stop what they were doing. We also declared war on germany to stop what they were doing. If Britain however went, lets fight this country mmmkk, id have to see the reasons for it.

I would volunteer, but not for the frontlines.I would mention what I'm currently doing(engineering school) and would go into a more technical field.
That would be best for everyone since I'm not exactly in tip top shape at the moment.

If you want canon fodder in my country,go to the economic studies part of an university.I swear, eight out of ten people I know that are in higher education are in the economy field.
Makes me wonder how the hell they're going to get jobs, knowing that the market is probably saturated.
Hell,to get back on topic, you could promise everyone who volunteers a job,and they would probably kill each other to get to the recruitement office first.

They're just as human as you, you know, they're just following orders. There are few truly evil soldiers in war; most are just trying to save their own hide as quickly as possible, just like you. Wording like that shows how ignorant and narrow-minded people can be.

I don't want to be all politically correct on the original poster- but German circa WW2 does NOT mean Nazi (Pet-Peeve). Members of the armed forces weren't necessarily members of the party. But think of the situation they were in. Your country had been raped by the terms of peace after the previous conflict. Just sayin'.

As far as the actualy question- sure. I joined the Army before, if we were invaded I'd do it again. I might end up doing it again in any event.

Ok there is alot of people in the army you agree? if they all didn't like what the government wanted them to do they could turn around and say no, i mean who's going to stop them? as they are the protectors of the government.

No way, infact id probably run to a peaceful country ASAP.

If i were infact conscripted, i would just desert.

That said, it would be cool hiding in buildings sniping out nazis :D (Though probably not as cool as it looks in my head)
Zombie nazis.

That being said, I would run. I would pack my wife & kids in the car (provided we had advance warning) & drive as far out in to the middle of nowhere as possible (at least 100 miles away from any major city & no where near highways/interstates).

Make camp, & hide out. I am politically neutral & refuse to fight for any manly form of Gov't.

None.

I wouldn't join the army because I'm a coward and a weakling. Not to mention that the Dutch army doesn't exactly stand a chance against anyone who might want to invade, and it's not like me to sign up with the losing team.

I'd help out the resistance, though. I'm a coward, not a traitor.
