Every campaign has to come to a close. And what better way for a campaign to end than to have a final confrontation with a foe, or doing a different thing in order to end a conflict. Maybe it's not even a fight. Maybe the DM came up with an interesting and clever way of doing things without it ending in conflict for a "final level."
