A tough lady who's not a helpless little girl and/or transparent sex object. Think Ripley from Aliens, or Leela from Futurama in a comedic context. The closest I've seen to this in mainstream games is Lady Shepard in Mass Effect.
Heavenly Sword wasn't hugely in that category...however I feel Lightning from FFXIII and FFX's Yuna (she was a lead) was the poster girl for strong character

OHHH SHIT WAIT WHAT ABOUT SAMUS ???? SHE IS HARDCORE and not a mere object. Broaden your gaming horizons :p
I don't play Final Fantasy, but I have difficulty taking a character that looks like this

http://www.ffcompendium.com/art/x2-yuna-a.jpg

seriously as a strong female. Maybe I shouldn't judge a book by its cover (or a Final Fantasy character by her stupid clothing), but still.

And you're right about Samus! Although from what I've seen in recent games, underneath the suit she's generally portrayed as a hot blonde with a giant rack and skimpy clothing.

Someone who knows the reason for everything and the origins of everything, does not hate anyone for anything they do or have done no matter who they are and loves everyone for everything no matter who they are or what they do or have done. He just [i\]gets[/i] people, he understands them [i\]and[/i] the universe at large Maybe even [i\]beyond[/i] that.

And so he actively attempts to change people who are untrue to themselves, or are trying to be someone they are not.

Plus, he can travel through time and alternate dimensions with the casual air of a man turning at the next corner.

Although I wouldn't enjoy him as much as the side-characters, likely normal people, he would fuck with.

I would be [i\]so [b\]happy[/b][/i] if I could read a seven book series, watch three adapted films, play a video game series, browse artwork, and watch a spin-off porno all based on this character's adventures.

That doesn't mean she can't be tough.

Absolutely. But if you'll read my post, you'll note I said that I'd prefer said protagonist to not be an obvious sex object.

A ten year old Saudi Arabian kid with a pet bear.
What should the bear's name be? I've hit an imaginary brick wall.

A little break from the 'stern-jawed' action hero is definitely needed. Gaming needs more characters who think about the consequences of their actions in the world. Maybe they regret killing, but see it as a necessary evil. They see the faces of their fallen enemies, etc. That sort of thing would really 'flesh out' a character, give them more substance.

Would like to see a hero who is a total coward. Someone that virtually pisses themselves with fear before every battle. Its easy to be a hero who has little fear, but to carry on inspite of fear is true heroism.

Just make him/her fallible, human and average looking.
Agreed, make them relatable to normal people and they will be more popular than men with steel plates for a chest and things like that.

I'm pretty happy with Alex Mercer from Prototype. Obscenely powerful, no morals and obscenely powerful.
You forgot to mention that he's obscenely powerful.
While you guys have got all of his major facets down, I think we're all forgetting how obscenely powerful he was. That is definitely an important part of his character.

My ideal protagonist is a 27-year old divorcee with a 12 year old daughter. He would have a drinking problem, and attempt to write in his spare time only to have his hopes dashed by a cruel publisher.

I personally don't think there are enough protagonists after revenge for the murder of their pet cat.
I agree.

More people like Arthur Dent out of the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.

I think that would make a nice change.
More in the whole Hitchhiker's Guide style would be a nice change of pace.

*Try Jade Empire. You have some choice in female characters there and they work quite well!

Beor Bearstein from The Golden Compass?

A velociraptor obviously. But one with street smarts and a wise-cracking sidekick.
Yes.

So we need a game with a strong, clever (but still fallable), wise-cracking female 10 year old velociraptor from Saudi Arabia with a pet bear seeking revenge for the death of her pet cat. I think I'd enjoy playing that character actually! :D

Agreed. And the plot twist about what he is just made it better.

A Firefighter who sticks it to the man and goes it alone to save people from burning buildings.
And dies within two minutes from the lamest death ever and would've lived if he obeyed the "Two-in-two-out" policy.

The type of protagonist that saves the day purely by accident, and doesn't typically give a damn about what's going on around him.

It'd just be interesting to see how a games developer manage to write a story around him.

His name could be Joe.

I think i'll start developing a cover design for "Average Joe just really doesn't care: The video game."

My dream protagonist should be:
Smart
Witty
Funny
Good looking
Strong (but not too strong)
Have a good sidekick
(If female) willing to get their tits out
Have a good arch enemy
Have an interesting background
Determined to not give a shit
Not in any way like Superman

The character itself and the surroundings must be perfect to make him/her look good.

To play as someone with as big aspirations and as much ambition as Andrew Ryan with a few more Ayn Rand quirks for kicks.

My main character would start out living a normal life in a rural 1300's style world.

His village and subsequently a good portion of the kingdom are attacked by a large bandit army.
To save everyone in his village, the main character distracts the bandits with insults, rocks and rotten fruit.

None too pleased with this, the bandits chase him until he is cornered on a steep waterfall, where the bandits fill him with arrows, knocking him off said waterfall, which dislocates both of his legs and bruises his left arm.
He then spends half a day dragging his broken body through a forest where he is almost killed by a group of orcs believing the bandits are actually the human kingdom attempting to expand it's rule.

The price of saving your loved ones, friends and acquaintances.
