You know, I could actually see that happening.

Well Blaster Master for the NES had you out to rescue your pet frog with your transforming death machine if I remember. That has to be close. >:)

That said I'm a perv, I'd probably go for a leather clad lesbo dominatrix in a game taking "M" to whole new levels, while keeping the adult elements as only one part of the whole experience. You know, like sort of what Bloodrayne was trying to tap into (though I'm not a huge fan of Vampires). Similar things have been tried, but never done correctly. :p

Or as I pointed out, if we're going to play unscrupules criminals, why not drop the whole organized crime/gang banger schtick and just let us play a seriel killer? I mean heck, we live in the day and age of "Dexter".

As far as being the 40 year old loser living in his parents basement, well I can get behind that actually given that's pretty much what I am nowadays (6 more years to go!). However similar things have been done. The nerd/fanboy turned into a super hero is an old idea, and in video games we've seen things like Nox, Ultima (albeit no proof that the "Avatar" was even living in his parent's basement, it can be inserted logically with little effort), Noctropolis, etc...

Truthfully if done well, being a jaded nerd would sort of give the character a reason to see through a lot of genere stereotypes. Also if not played up for laughs you could get into the whole "Thomas Covenant: The Unbeliever" vibe. Sort of turning the guy into an anti-hero because he believes it's all too good to be true (and perhaps like Thomas Covenant wind up getting things done, but oftentimes the wrong way).

I'd also find it kind of amusing to have a game based around the idea of say Joel Rosenberg's "Guardians Of The Flame" (RPG gamers transported into the fantasy world of their RPG and assuming the identities and skills of their characters), or the old "Dungeons and Dragons" cartoon, but in which everyone decides from the very beginning "wow, this roxxors compared to our old lives. Let's just stay here" ignores the whole "returning home" gambit tossed out at least at the start, and just heads off to do whatever they want.

Dungeon Master Seyz: "You must defeat Venger to return home!"

They Seyz Back: "We have amazing super abillities, and an incredible world. Why bother? In fact it seems like we should make sure Venger stays in power so we can remain here. Comon guys, let's find some elf babes and hobbit weed!".

A sick, evil, brutal, psychotic Viking, spawned from the underworld. He wields a giant axe that's bathed in blood.

His name is Fluffy and he's 2ft tall.

An average guy that worships Yahtzee and does everything he asks for, also, he's shouting Yahtzee quotes instead of one-liners. So pretty much an average Escapist.

A fucking velociraptor obviously. But one with street smarts and a wise-cracking sidekick.
Maybe Chris Rock???

But I want to see a Heath Ledger esque Joker character where you job is to fuck things up....be evil and actually get points for cutting up peoples face and leaving descrit clues and being random in your terror!

Your avatar would make a nice protagonist.

Note* Imagine a game with a cat shooting people. Hey, Rare did it with a squirrel.

If I wanted a good protagonist I would want him to be an anarchic, misogynistic wanker with Sherlock Homes-like wit and intellect.

A small duck in the adventures of quackyland, where he use his awesome oratory powers to convince all the foxes to form an alliance with the ducks to finally take down those blasted rabbits, then they meet the queen and take her hostage and nuke everyone else.

so yeah, a duck

Mainly this, but you avatar gets me wondering whether or not it'd be worth it to play a game (any game) as Dr. Cox...

They're actually making it into a video game. The trailer consisted of a man with a giant head and tiny snake arms doing an attack animation with a knife, and then it switches to a bloodstain while we listen to a monologue by "the Jackal" from Farcry2.

How about wisecracking furry alien wielding guns sized like a motorbike, and having Brezhnev-class eyebrows?

...No,wait,that's Ratchet.

In all seriousness, there's too much "brown-haired men with a troubled past" in a games nowadays. Maybe intellegent and witty aristocrat, whose place is anything but war could be a nice protagonist in an action game. Or maybe an "office plankton" kind of guy,who is drawn into quest to save the galaxy with his 1337 paperwork skillz? Or actually, more alien protagonists?..
...or the Rocketman,a guy with a jetpack,RPG launcher, and a top hat out of which he launches missiles? The possibilities are endless!..

It's a good thing I'm in a cafe, because we just got served!

Really, I think my dream protagonist is someone like Dan Fortesque from the Medievil series, back on the PS1. Everyone is convinced he's a great hero who died just after slaying the sorceror Zarok, but in actuality he was killed by an arrow before he even got into the battle. Essentially his reputation is a PR stunt by the King, because Dan was his best buddy. Not only that, but Zarok survived. Essentially the game is you trying to earn your heroic reputation and the respect of all the other dead heroes who hang around in Valhalla.

Also he's a skeleton. Did I mention the skeleton thing?

Not only that, but he's only got one eye and no jaw (being a skeleton), so he doesn't spout any tired one-liners. You even need subtitles to understand him. A flawed and disrespected hero makes an original and likeable protagonist.

A character in a horror game whom is incapable of fighting and focuses on running and evading his monstrous pursuers. Which is basically what the upcoming ?Silent Hill: Shattered Memories? is supposedly going to be. So my wish is going to come true (maybe). I hope the game works out.
