I've rather recently bought one, and while I only have Assassin's Creed and P4 on it, and have only played P4, I've really enjoyed it. It's a well build machine, only downside is the library for it. So far I can't in all honesty say that it's been worth the money I spent, but once I've finished P4 and AC, and a few other games I have in mind, I feel it will end up being worthwhile.

As an owner of a PSP, a DS, and a Vita, I'm glad to weigh in here.

Sony has trouble producing a decent number of IPs for their handhelds but the games they do produce can be really good. That being said, I also use the systems as a media device. Movies, shows, music, etc. I also like to play classics like Front Mission 3 or FF7 and such which are readily available on the PS network. I prefer it to most tablets.

The DS game has a lot of IPs but most of them don't appeal to me. That's not their fault, they just miss my demographic. But I certainly wouldn't use it for all the media functions.

If my wife and I are traveling together we take the PSP and the Vita now.

I am an early adopter of the Vita. My only complaint is the lack of games, but it plays what we have just fine. I really enjoy it, especially playing PSP games like Dissidia 012.
Things that I think would make the Vita a success aside from 3rd party development increases:

1. Add PS2 emulation and open up the classics library. I already enjoy the PSX games I own on the Playstation Network on my Vita (Symphony of the Night on a handheld is a great time waster) and I believe it would benefit the system greatly to have PS2 classics playable.
2. Follow through on the Crossplay/Crossbuy promise.
3. Add Flash/Shockwave support
4. Add a Vita indie development channel.
5. Lower price on the memory cards. I currently own 2x 4gb and 1x 8gb, mostly due to lucky finds when walking around a Walmart looking down at my feet.

I really feel the Vita is akin to the Dreamcast in that it has a lot of damn good potential but is being screwed by lack of 3rd party support. If it dies out I hope there will be a community dedicated to prolonging its life by developing at the very least some emulated game support.
I do feel the platform with its dual touchpads could really do well in the RTS market. Or even turn-based strategy (PORT XCOM ALREADY!!)
Also during travel I really enjoy using Netflix on there because of its crisp display. I am however unimpressed with the "mobile" component that makes it technically a "phone" but without any real phone support except for Skype which I do not use.

Yeah, the proprietary memory cards needs to stop. They literally prevent me from buying more games when I can't store them all in one place. The PSP had some nice alternate 3rd party cards that I found useable but this new vita card is so small I don't have too much hope for a work around (the PSP had an adapter that allowed the mini-memory sticks which meant I could use mini-memory sticks like they were games and swap them out as desired).

As for the ps2 emulator. I know that the Vita's graphics are nicer or at least more optimized than the PS2 was, but is it actually capable of emulating it? I do expect a lot more emulation of the ps2 games with the ps4. So we'll quickly find out. But emulating proprietary hardware often requires a significant amount of processing, far beyond the specs of the physical hardware at the time.
