Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away

These are really the top dogs.

There's also other lesser, but still enjoyable ones, like Street Fighter 2, Spriggan, Vampire Hunter D, Sword of the Stranger, Arrietty, and Redline.
More or less seconded. Most of the stuff I was going to suggest is here anyway.

Also, check out Ruroni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal (OVA). It's a 4 episode long prequel, that is best watched just like a movie (It can be enjoyed as a stand alone work, because it makes little reference to the main series).

Also, if you're willing to watch 11-13 episode long anime series, check out Puella Magi Madoka Magica because I feel the need to tell everyone (because its so good). Also completely self contained with a complete story.

I will throw my voice in with those who have brought up Studio Ghibli, which made one of my favourite anime movies "The Cat Returns".

Again, already mentioned but because they are amazing:

Tokyo Godfathers
Perfect Blue
Ghost in the Shell (I do prefer Stand Alone Complex)
Vampire Hunter D (first movie and Bloodlust)

I would recommend as well:

Read or Die
Macross Plus OVA 1-4
Straight Jacket
EDIT: I forgot one! Roujin Z as well!

A short series that I would highly recommend is Eden of the East, which only has 11 episodes. It has a great story and a very attention catching opening scene (it involves one of the main characters standing in front of the White House naked, while holding a cell phone and a gun.) It also has two original content movies King of Eden and Paradise Lost.

There is Slayers Returns and Gorgeous, both great comedy films.Plus you don't have to be fammiler with the Slayers TV series to enjoy them.

There is also Interstella 5555 which is a pretty inserting movie though it depends on if you like Daft Punk or not.

Also anything Casual Shinji said.

Doomed Megaopolis
The fatal Fury movies
Tekken: The motion picture
The original Vampire Hunter D (I'm surprised nobody mentioned this)
The original Appleseed (This movie is a master piece)
The Black Lion (One of my all time favorites)
Ninja Ressurection (Better than Ninja Scroll IMHO)
Grave of the Fire flies
Curse of the necrinomicon
Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma
Darkside Blues (another moody favorite)
Perfect Blue
Macross Plus
Blue Sub 6 (film version)
An Angel's Egg (Fantastic Oshii film)
Demon Warrior Koji
deomon city Shinjuku
Wicked City
Saber Marionette R
Violence Jack

Is this enough? I'm trying to add obscure titles most haven't mentioned. I don't like mentioning the same titles over and over.

Edit: I agree with most of casual shinji's list, but I'm not too fond of Miazaki's films. Too disney'ish for my taste. I will say that princess mononoki was quite good. Also, the patlabor films are some of the best films I've ever seen.

Most of my recommendations have already been mentioned, but another good stand-alone movie is Escaflowne, there is a TV series of the same name but the movie is a completely separate continuity, and no knowledge of the TV series is necessary.

There have been several recommendations for Lupin movies, and I will chip in that you *almost* can't go wrong with a Lupin movie. They can be viewed in any order, and all you need to know is the basic set-up of "World-class thief with a sense of honor has various adventures around the globe, sometimes accompanied by gunman/hot chick/samurai and always pursued by obsessed interpol agent."

Hard to find but very worth it if you can is Princess Arete, which I have occasionally described as being "More like a Miyazaki film than any actual Miyazaki film." It also includes the *best* use of a magic wish-ring *ever*.

The best anime films?

Well, you can NOT go wrong with anything by Mamoru Hosoda. The girl who lept through time and Summer Wars are amazing, and I hear the wolf children movie is damn good as well.

Ghibli movies are basically all good, my favorite being either Mononoke or Laputa.

Other than those, I don't really watch many anime movies. Except the Evangelion rebuild series. Also, I'm going to go out and say End of Evangelion is pretty good for a watch even if its only for the magnitude of "what the fuck" that can result from it.

Honestly I actually liked Tales of Vesperia The First Strike and it was actually my first movie on Blu-ray. However this is the prequel to a game so it might be for those who liked the game rather than everyone.

5 Centimetres per Second is definitely worth a watch. It's split into three parts and is about a boy's experience with love and growing up. Don't let the generic premise throw you off, it takes the road less traveled when it comes to a story about romance and that's all I'm gonna say without spoiling anything else. Furthermore, it is absolutely gorgeous. [http://cbf45w.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pNaXfL2FxIv27TVtsT-pFrcIWR1r9dO-BxH_pVJaG_O9MxXBYqVYNQBVm_f-PZVgyf94ZI3WRzk9i8wjlAHuGYg]

I feel like the outcast here since I really did not like Castle in the Sky, despite loving most of Miyazaki's other stuff! I just found it far less charming than the others. My favorite Ghibli is probably either Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Whisper of the Heart, Kiki's Delivery Service, or Howl's Moving Castle.

Most of the ones I would suggest have already been mentioned above (anything by Satoshi Kon, Studio Ghibli) but check out Ninja Scroll! I think it was one of those movies that was based on the characters of series, but since I never saw the series, I know the movie is a great standalone. Violent, action packed, beautiful style. Very enjoyable to watch.

Also maybe check out Colorful. It was one that I just saw pretty recently and I was pretty stunned at how awesome it was. I can't really give much of a good plot idea because it would give it away.

The Garden of Words is a beautiful little piece. It's only around 45 minutes long but it is just mind blowingly gorgeous to look at.

Pretty much anything by Hayo Miyazaki (like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro). I also enjoyed Summer Wars and Paprika. Oh, and Interstella 5554 if that counts.

There's a film version of Blue Submarine #6?!

Or is that just the 4 episodes smushed together?

My mistake! I kept thinking back to the toonami premiere. It felt like it was one long movie. Even though I have the special edition and know it's an OVA series.

As far as 5cm per second. I thought it was an ok movie.

Which brings me to my next recommendation.

Wonderful Days. I just LOVE this movie. It's heartfelt, emotional, action packed, and it has a great OST. Watch!

I want to recommend Doggy Poo too. They premiered it on cartoon network some time back. It was the kind of show that I felt like everyone should watch. It is a movie that kids and adults could appreciate, but it was quite emotional. I did shed a tear or two during my first viewing.

Obligatory mentions have to go to Spirited Away and Ghost in the Shell, even if they're essentially the Japanese versions of Alice in Wonderlands and Blade Runner respectively.
Other than that, there's Kara no Kyoukai. It's really hard to understand on your first time through, but it's still very interesting.
There's also Redline which, while not very good storywise, has some amazing animation.

Elementalors

I have no idea if these are even movies, but I record them on VHS tapes when they used to come on the movie channel when I was 12. Please, if anyone knows where I can find ANY of these on dvd or something, please let me know, because the tapes are wearing out real bad! D=

Haven't done much in anime movies, but I guess movie 1, 3 and 5[footnote]I.e. the ones that ditch the annoyance that's the overarching plot, in favor of more interesting self contained stories, stylish combat, and philosophical musings.[/footnote] in the Kara no Kyoukai - The Garden of Sinners series, as well as Grave of the Fireflies would be my current choices.

I'm expecting I'll quite like the Steins;Gate: Fuka Ryōiki no Déjà vu and Puella Magi Madoka Magica movies as well, whenever they get subtitled releases.

To ask what my favorite thing is difficult...

But it's probably one of the Ghibli films.

Again, dunno bout favorites but the last movie I watched though was "Wolf Children".

Also thinking about rewatching "Redline" at some point.
Found out about it from this random AMV:
