And no, I don't mean the XBLA ones either. I'm talking about the old school, coin-op arcade machines.

My favorite hands down has to be the Star Wars Trilogy arcade game:

Shooting down TIE fighters, having a light saber duel with Vader, and deflecting the shots from Boba Fetts blaster were only a few things this game had to offer. Sadly, I was pretty awful at it and probably spent more $ than I care to admit.

So I ask you fellow Escapists, what's YOUR favorite arcade game?

I was one of those idiots who paid twice to dual-wield in the arcade game "Area-51"

I also really liked "T2: The Arcade Game," "Growl," "Crisis Zone," all of the various "Time Crisis" games, and pretty much any top-down view fighter jet game like "Raiden" or "Aerofighters."

NBA Jam was my fav arcade game. Every weekend I would go down to the arcade and spend my entire allowance trying to beat that game. I even unlocked the secret tank game in my quest to win. The stupid arcade employee ended up resetting the game, when he saw the tank game, and I lost my 50 cents. I lost my taste for the game after that.

Has to be Super Hang On for me.

When I was a kid, that leaning left and right, and your character doing the same amazed the shit out of me.

Street Fighter 2 any version I could get my hands on in the arcades absolutely loved the game only other one I spent a lot of time on was the Jurassic park lightgun game that was awesome as well. I never really played much at arcades though I just used to watch others play much cheaper that way.

Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara I must have wasted over $2,000 on that machine, every single time I went to the arcade I had to beat it twice or thrice, it was just AWESOME!!!!

man that game needs a portable re-release :(

I thought I didn't care much for the racing genre. But, when I think about it, I realize I used to like a lot of racing games, but they were all in the arcades--except like Mario Kart. Maybe that's where my recent desire to find a fun modern racing game came from? Finally ran across Blur, which is a blast even without a steering wheel, gear shift or big plastic racing seat.

Cruisin' USA - Everything just felt awesome in this game. Stamping your initials out on a license plate was sweet. Remember how bugs would smash into your windshield on the Iowa(??) level? So many quarters.

Others:
Hydro Thunder
Metal Slug
That wireframe Star Wars X-wing game, where you fly down the Death Star trench
Crazy Taxi
Ski Ball
Time Crisis games
Police Academy
That one competitive target shooting light gun game
Galaga
Donkey Kong (isn't only like 3 or 4 levels? xD)
Gauntlet

I loved the Star Wars Arcade game and the Jurassic Park ones as well to stick with the licensed on-rail shooters genre of Arcade games. When it comes to classic titles my favorite is Galaga and that may very well be my all-time favorite Arcade title. I also loved the Konami beat-em-ups like Simpson's, X-Men and, TMNT.

The best ones I played are Time Crisis 3 and House of the Dead 4. I just love such refined rail shooters. Time Crisis 4 was kind of a fail to me. It was weak but I can't put my finger why.

The Metal Slug series, I can't pick just one of them. They all kick incredible amounts of ass, and I've played all seven of them to death.
Or all six, techincally, as the seventh was only released on consoles. Screw it, I love that game too.

Oh yeah. I do love me some Time Crisis as well as Silent Scope.

I can't put my finger why.
Pun intended?

There was this weird thing where it was humans vs undead skeletons. Except the skeletons were more organized than the humans and could use guns and shit too. It was a 4 player co-op game and you had to hold onto fucking rifles instead of pistols

Used to play Time Crisis 2 all the time back at my old bowling alley. Top 3 co-op high scores for 5 years. Did well on TC3 but just didn't have as much practice on it as TC2.

As a kid in the early 90s, my favorite arcade games were always Beat-Em-Ups.
In no particular order:

The Simpsons
X-MEN
Turtles in Time
Alien Vs. Predator

And a couple of the rarer ones:

Violent Storm
Vendetta
King of the Dragons
Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom
Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder

"Fear the vacuum!"

Honorable mention goes to Revolution X and the Star Wars Flight sims.
OMG! I forgot about Revolution X! I think I had that on a console...maybe the 32X?
