I admit being a bit of a snob, but I think people like Monopoly and Risk just because they don't know any better. They're kind of like the Farmville of boardgames. It makes me sad that people are missing out on so many great games because they're busy playing the same old Monopoly over and over again.

Not sure if they make it anymore though

I'm tempted to say Risk, but that isn't right. It is a brilliant game that I love everything about except the part where I have to play. The game just takes far to long to play to count as my favorite. That leaves scrabble (I love the game but hate keeping score as I'm more interested in writing awesome words than I am managing a strategy regarding score and word placement), go (a game that very few people seem to play outside of my university math and CS departments), and Chess (a game where anyone who plays and is my age is generally exceptionally good).

I have to agree. Those games have been around for a long time and are thus well-known, but has since been surpassed over and over.

Like many here, I enjoy BSG, Dominion, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Arkham Horror and so forth. I thought I'd mention some titles we typically enjoy that have not been mentioned yet.

Puerto Rico is just one of those rather simple-to-play games that do not take up too much time. We can always pick that one up if we don't feel like anything else. Had great success playing this with just about everyone. If you've only played board games like Monopoly and Risk, I suggest trying this one out to give you an idea of what a splendid world of games there is out there.

Agricola feels like the more complex older brother of Puerto Rico. It can be a bit much at times, but when you have the time and the mindset, it's a great play.

Coloretto is a card game that doesn't take a lot of time and is great fun to play. We have barely hit five or so plays with it thus far, so we still find new nuances in it.

Finally, I'll mention Race for the Galaxy. You'll have to adapt your strategy every time you play it and make skillful use of what is given to you. A truly splendid card game.

Monopoly. It's a classic, though I haven't played a board game in years.

edit: actually Chess is better. timeless game.

I have always loved Cluedo (I think it's called Clue in the states, I don't know for certain) or a game called Zombies! god, I played it all the time when I was in 6th form. We ended up taking up a load of the canteen tables when we got the expansion packs on top of the actual games. Ah good times.

Chess. It's a classic game, and it helps that most people that I play with have no clue of strategy besides "The queen is powerful. Get her out as soon as I can." I am very good against those people.

Chess, for sure, though a close second would be HeroQuest [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HeroQuest] (too bad only the first two expansions saw release over here).

Since I'm not sure if Dungeons and Dragons qualifies as a board game, I'm gonna go with Risk. I love plotting world domination.
