What it says in the title.

Rules:

-Must be from before the year 1900. IE: it could be colonial america or pre-soviet russia, but not modern day america or russia.

-You must include an image of signifance of that culture.

For me, it'd be the Aztecs, mayans, and other pre-Columbian meso-american cultures.

I love their arecheticure and weapons.

I'm a fan of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. Both made leaps and bounds in just about every field of art and science, from painting, sculpture, and architecture to politics, storytelling, and religion. Without them, the world would be a completely different place.

The Sumerians. The first of the Mesopotamian civilizations proper, who laid the groundwork for everyone from the Persians to the Babylonians and Assyrians. Known for, among other things, their ziggurats, and a temple complex at Eridu with no less than seventeen individual temples, built one on top of the other.

The British Empire.

Why? Because it's like measuring penises, and we won.

Ain't I shallow...
This. We also had awesome coats.

I'll add an image of significance, I guess.

I'll take a more popular one while I can. Rome, specifically the Roman Republic.

And I definitely know more about these guys in said time period than your average person. I have studied them formally and informally for at least 6 or 7 years straight now.

Rome, before Caesar was assassinated and everything went crazy and weird.

Say what you want about him, but shit was tight when he was running things.

Well, I guess I should give some props to my rather brutal, early-imperialistic ancestors:

I don't know if I could call 'em a "favorite", though. Can't say I agree with the values of any early culture... or all of the values of any modern culture, for that matter.

Its a shame they got booted out of the Americas by the Native tribes of that area.

and with that end, I would say the Native American people. Which? Well, its hard to choose. The Inca were powerful, the Mayans brilliant, and the Aztecs just blood thirsty. And thats not even getting out of South America (you can call it Central America, but there's no eight continent called it).

If disease hadnt run through the people, I'm pretty sure they would have knocked the Europeans out of the Americas in the North with numbers, and the fact that they only needed a person to teach them how to make guns was incredible then they pretty much would have stalled the European powers.

So I would say the Cherokee, cause thats my tribal descent. Though there's alot of other cultures I admire and respect, like the Shawnee, The Miami, the Hopi, the Comanche.

Sorry, its hard to find something that they did in in picture. They lived in the forests and eastern coasts, so they didnt exactly have a lot of huge area for building. But they did have education for everyone and was far more advanced sociologically then the European. Thats just hard to display in picture.

EDIT: found some architecture.

Dont laugh. Europeans almost got wiped out in a winter. Natives just laughed in their warmth.

I would also say the Zulu culture. I know someone from it in my college, and he's an interesting enough kinda guy. We get to talk about how Europeans screwed us over. XD Joking. Well, kinda. Them and their dick measurings.

The Mongols, although I don't know about them being a civilization as such. They where great adopters of culture and technology from the people they conquered as well as some of their own, like the recurved mongol bow and their silk armour that didn't stop arrows penetrating flesh but did mean you could easily remove them by pulling the silk out of the wound. They were very fair with those who submited to their rule and totally ruthless to any who opposed them.

Most modern tank combat is based on Mongol cavalry tactics. Forget other military comanders Subutai is probably the greatest that ever lived.

Almost certainly the Persian Empire, especially under Darius I.

Religious tolerance, a badass military, The Royal Road's reconstruction?

Cool stuff that Persian Empire.

The Behistun Inscription, recording many events that occurred in Darius I's lifetime.

God I love Napoleon's Empire. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_French_Empire]

I still really like the British Empire (or at least its history) though... I usually choose Briton when playing a civilization game so I guess they're my favorite. You can't deny the awesomeness that is Horatio Nelson!
