I hate cliches. I hate them with a burning goddamn passion. They've become so token and widespread, no matter where I go, I get assaulted by countless "Godly badasses", "Big tough men with a heart of gold", "Chaste warrior-women", or "a rogue cop with a checkered past". Now, I'm a writer and DM, I understand; you can't break the mold with every freaking character. And as weird as it seems when you think about it, when cliches first appeared, they were lauded as innovative. Lauded enough that every script-writer and director started making a knockoff until the original had lost all meaning.
But they are still employed and used to this day because some of them actually work. Whether good writing, acting, or just fitting in or contrasting with the rest of the world they exist in, some cliches are delightfully memorable and lovable.
Personally, Ash Williams and Duke Nukem are some of my favorite characters despite being nothing special on the outside. Ash Williams is a smart-mouthed manly man who gets pushed too far and goes friggin' berserk. Duke Nukem is what happens when you tie Johnny Bravo down and force him to watch every "manly action movie" from the 80s and 90s. Ash is incredibly well-written and played by Bruce Campbell, while Duke Nukem mixes his nostalgic one-liners that drip with irony with DOOM style gameplay and a delightfully hilarious voice actor in John St. Jon.
