now we've all repsonded to the forum "what your favorite movie is" but that's nowhere near as interesting as know what someone else's favorite director is. I mean, knowing who someone's favorite director is much more insightful than know what their favorite movie is

My answer would have to be Stanley Kubrick. Although Hichcok may be the master of suspense and Terintino may be the master of style, Kubrick holds a special place in my heart as the master of atmosphere

Also, if anyone puts Uwe Boll down and is not kidding, I will lose what little faith in humanity i have left

Left 4 Deads A.I. director. Zing! (actually that was lame)

I don't pay much attention to directors, i tend to judge every movie separately. But i have noticed that the Wachowski brothers make excellent movies.

Cannot WAIT for ninja assassin!

James Cameron. I mean, the guy took an awesome movie like Alien, changed the genre to sci fi action/horror, and made a sequel that was JUST AS GOOD (...if not better) then the first. That takes talent

I must admit a love of David Cronenberg's movies. His attention to detail and ability to truly set a scene without being obvious or pretentious about it, and his uncann ability to cast just the right actors, makes me look forward to his films. I can't say his films are always favorites of mine, but I always enjoy watching them.

I've got quite a few favourite directors but the two stand outs are Guillermo Del Toro and Hayao Miyazaki. They are probably the most gifted directors around, combining wonderfully creative imagery with warm, well paced and emotionally powerful stories. Guillermo is the man behind the superb "Pan's Labyrinth" and "The Devils Backbone". If you wondered why Blade 2 was so good it's because Del Toro was at the helm. He is also responsible for the Hellboy films.

Miyazaki is truly the master of animation, along with the films he directs for Studio Ghibli he also produces nearly every film too. Check out "Nausicaa", "My Neighbour Totoro", "Spirited Away" (possibly the best animated film ever made) and "Howls Moving Castle". All are Japanese animation at it's finest. He is widely regarded as one of the best story tellers in cinmatic history. Honestly, most of his films easily top even the very best Disney efforts.

I've also got my eye on Chris Nolan, Robert Zemeckis, and Tim Burton...

Fecking ninja! >

I've noticed a few things about Kubrick's movies, I don't know if these are blatanly obvious or not:

1. He uses a lot of white in his backgrounds.
2. He sometimes uses no stage lighting, just natural light, to get a sense of realism (I suppose that's why).
3. He uses things that both repulse and attract his audience to dra them in, most of the sets/costumes are pretty ugly looking or have colors that clash and are somehow still appealing.
4. He does a lot of switching between two characters' faces who are in a conversation with a very steady shot, like so:

(Couldn't find videos of other examples, but I know he does it in other films)
