fallout 1 and two had quite interesting stories, it was fun after you finished the first one to encounter some remrants of the past in the second one (like finding a village that you saved in the first game to be grown to a republic and have a statue of the first vault dweller [you] in the main square)
I don't really get the fallout 3's timeline though...

Wait, they're actually making a sequel? Thought that was a rumor.

....How can they continue that one? Didn't we end it in the game...?
For starters Bioshock is the Second part of a trilogy and comes right after the systemshock.
So considering that its a TRIlogy, it's only natural for the THIRD part to be in development :)
You WHAT?

Half Life 2... not just the story but the wonderful way in which it is told through the physical world around you...

the downtrodden citizens of city 17 and creepy female voice that announces god knows what... the giant screens spurting out propaganda...
the ruined houses along the coast with little trajic stories to discover inside them...
the ominous citadel overlooking everything you do...
the fantastic Alyx... best AI in agame.. like EVUURRR...
the stunning interactive journey through the interior of the citadel, where you see the internal workings of the combine...
To right, my friend. The HL2 setting and story is incredible.

Best/least irritating (depending on how you see it) JRPG story I know.

Bioshock is the "spiritual successor" of System Shock, not part of some trilogy. Even if it was part of a trilogy, there is already a System Shock 1 and 2, which would make Bioshock the end of said trilogy.

Legacy of Kain - nothing has topped that in my eyes, it's better then any game, movie or book that I have ever engaged myself in.

Indeed it is! After this thread I had to go back and play it again and it still holds up years later as one of the most near perfect gaming experiences out there... the only thing about the whole series I didn't like were the vehicle controls, and they weren't even that bad compared to most games lol!

Personaly, the Monkey Island games had great amusing stories. Mass Effect has the best story of the games i have played recently though.

ico had the best love story and villian
: D jus' remembered ico. That was an awesome game. Can't remember if i ever finished it was about 10 when i played it : /. Din't really get the love story thing cos I was young but I enjoyed pulping demon-things with my flail : ).
Hmmm. Story. Half life one maybe. Or assassins creed. Oooh no maybe Thief: deadly shadows. Or...
Only played HL2 once an the only thing i remember is being repeatedly shredded by a helicopter. Soul Reaver had a cool story too. I might be biased on that though cos I just like vampire stories : /. On that note Darren Shan's vampire saga is best series of anything ever, but thats books not games

I'd agree that soul reaver had a very good story, I'd actually want to see another legacy of kain sequel or prequel to the series and revive a great game, dante's inferno is a good one also, fable is one that I'm having to look at again because of the twists not so much in story but behind it that make you scratch your head wondering. A few Star Wars games had a good story line, Dark Forces, Force unleashed, Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Star Wars Galaxies, in Galaxies you felt you were in the Star Wars universe meeting key characters if you wanted and working with or against them, for the alliance, empire or neutral. System Shock 2 also had a good story. Fade to Black on sega cd and Snatcher, The darkness.

those would be my top
