umm.... hmm. Most of the bands I listen to are pretty mainstream, I think. Though there is one band called Junkstar Rocky that I like(d). I heard one album of theirs a few years ago called Habit of Creature that I liked. I can't find a single youtube video for one of their songs, so i'll just give you a link to some featured songs on their myspace page. My Pills are Rocket Ships is my favorite song by them.

I went to Warp Tour this year, and I saw this band called Shut Up And Deal. Me and my friend thought they were pretty badass:

Mainstream or not, I feel my vote is considered, "lesser known."

MuteMath, hands-down.

Jack Conte also has his own music, but I feel he does some of the best cover/mash-ups I've heard.

Big Star

The weird thing about them is that they really should be bigger, its not like they're even particularly left-field.

Still, no one seems to know who they are

What is this, some kind of hipster thread??

Good, because my favourite lesser known band is probably the epitome of hipster music.Just kidding. This isn't hipster music. It's been on TV! Too mainstream! If you watched the Boomerang channel, then you'll probably recognise:

Nah, just a music nerd like me. Unless you would get annoyed if one of your favourite bands became mainstream. Then you'd be a hipster.

OT: The Flaming Lips and I Fight Dragons.

Amon Amarth
Sadly, Amon Amarth appears to have left the "lesser known" category... I died a little when I saw this, but their shirts are being sold at Hot Topic now...

OT: Well uhh... most the stuff I listen to is lesser known. Heaven Shall Burn is my favorite band, but some people are here seem to have heard of them.

I've never seen anyone post anything about Kronos, my favourite brutal death metal band

That was awesome! But probably for the wrong reason. Once the actual words started at like a minute and a half in I burst out laughing because it sounded to me like a bear violently murdering a parrot. Main riff sounded good though.
OT: Is Breaking Benjamin considered a lesser known band? They are my overall favorite band.

Apparently, Huey Lewis and the News is unknown to my peers. I mean... Why? They're AWESOME!

My other favorite band is Queen, which IS recognized here. Thankfully.

They're not that well known, but I've noticed more attention being paid to their music (which is a good thing, I just know they'll unfortunately lose some fans over it). I've never heard a song sound so happy with such potentially dark lyrics :D
I generally don't like male artists either, but something about them I'm really loving.

god damn it hot topic keep your hands off their stuff otherwise we're gonna have even more posers (even though I like the ease of getting their shirts without having a card to use but still)

Annihilator and Ra

youtube search Annihilator live masters of rock 2008 and you'll get a ton of great songs!

Ra has more on youtube than playlist.com so do youtube, search "Skorn" and "Do you call my name" for starters

Lots of people don't realize that Cyriak Harris actually writes his own music. And some of it is quite catchy.

Mostly, they watch the video and only want to talk about that.

Also I'd say Aesthetic Perfection, and possibly Devin Townsend.

Gonna have to go with a little band based out of San Francisco called "Eleventeen". I spent three years looking for just ONE of their only TWO albums called "In The Air" Friggin'. Amazing.

Title Track:

Amazing album and I would hire them to make a third just for personal use ha.

Gonna have to echo previous sentiments about Psychostick. They are awesomeness.

Now to go REAL obscure and recommend the Chinese folk/black metal band Tengger Cavalry. It's a bit of an acquired taste, especially with the traditional Mongolian folk vocals and instruments, but it's definitely original.
