Why? I'll tell you why:

1. He fights off zombies.

2. He fights off zombies with absolutely no help.

3. He fights off zombies with absolutely no help, using only mining equipment.

4. He fights off zombies with absolutely no help, using only mining equipment, and as a result finds out...

It wasn't worth it at all, because his crew mates he came with and his girlfriend are all dead and the only thing he managed to save was a ship full of dead people.

5. ...he then proceeds to simply shake his head in sadness, and beat the crap out of a tenacle monster the size of a blimp before just popping on a space ship and going home...

...and then he quite possibly dies. By his girlfriend. Who he failed in saving. Who is now a zombie. Ouch.

Point being, he does all this and proceeds TO NOT GIVE A CRAP AND GO HOME.

Purely because of how mighty it is when you battle other pirates, and win by insulting them. i mean come on, anyone who wins a duel with 'you fight like a dairy farmer' and respond with how appropriate, you fight like a cow' wins it for me...oh and it was like the first game i ever played

Balthier, Final Fantasy XII. And yes, he IS the main character. The story is more or less driven around him. He takes charge of the group, and at a few places he blatantly sais it! "I'm the Leading Man" Any time Vaan tries to even get in the way, Balthier just uses this line as a "get off my fucking story-line" card. He's witty, charming, and an asshole, qualities I look for in friends. So yeah.... other than that? Altiar, from AC. Great character, not so great a game.

He keeps the team together, always knows what to do next, has connections all over the fucking place, and he saves everyones lives. You know, like: Cloud, Titus(prick), Zidane, so on and so forth down the line. As far as Final Fantasy terminology goes, this guy really is the Main Character

If that's your reasoning then I guess it makes sense. He's the one with the dad issues that started the whole thing (if you want to see it that way). Plus he owns their cool ship. On the other hand, the entire "save the land and return the queen to her throne" thing goes straight to Basch and Ashe while everyone else is supposed to help. Guess it depends on point of view.

Yeah. Probably doesn't help my cause any that just about every character aside from Penelo has their own personal history crammed, if somewhat forcefully in Fran's case, into the story-line. I always felt Balthier just had that "Leader" feel about him. From preventing Vaan from turning a malnourished Basch into giblets, up to creating peace between the kingdoms, I felt he played way more of an important role in the story. I saw it as thus: Vaan=Freedom, Penelo=Vaan's Junk, Basch=Duty, Ashe=Kingdom Restored, Fran=Balthier. Mean while Balthier just looks at all of it, throws his hands in the air and sais, "Fuck! I guess I'll do it!"
