Just finished Final Fantasy VI again and after some experimentation I still used:
Terra, Edgar, Sabin and Cyan because:

Terra, most easy to max since shes there from the beginning and it's kinda her story.
Edgar (ChainSaw)
Sabin (Bum Rush)
Cyan(Quadra Slice)

After two playthroughs of Chrono Trigger it was: Chrono, Marle and Frog because:

Arc Impulse!

This got me thinking about party composition.

- Fighter, W.Mage, B.Mage, Monk. (FF)
- Cecil, Kain, Rosa, Edge (FF IV)
- Cloud, Tifa, Cid. (FFVII)
- Me, Morrigan and Alistair. (DA:O)

What are your winning combinations of characters in an RPG and why?

Mass Effect: Wrex, Liara, Vanguard Shepard.

Biotics were ridiculously overpowered in that game. Liara could basically have every enemy in sight bouncing harmlessly off the walls. Wrex could pitch in with his own biotics while tanking like a champ (barrier + immunity + shield boost + regeneration). Vanguard Shep dishes out the damage and brings yet more biotics to the party. Plus, I liked the contrasting personalities of the hardened mercenary and sheltered scientist.

Mass Effect 3: Garrus, Liara, Vanguard Shepard.

Similar deal. Liara can lock down everything in sight (singularity in crowds, stasis on shields/barriers and warp on armour). Vanguard Shep zips around detonating biotic combinations and getting up close and personal with a shotgun. Garrus hangs back stripping away protective layers and making badass comments. Good times.

1 charchater who can do everything: multiclass priest/ninja/wizard. Anyone else in the party is just an audience.

Baldurs gate:

If I'm being a good boy I will have these:

Ranger/Fighter: Minsc (I must ALWAYS have Minsc!) +
Tank: Ajantis gets the job done nicely, plus he brings some healing + Paladin shit
Cleric: Yeslick is a fuckin boss!
Mage: Me or Xan (Depending on who I'm playing, I main as a mage nowadays)
Thief: Imoen (Sometimes I scrap thief and just get another fighter)

However, If I'm feeling evil that particular playthrough:

Thief: Montaron
Mage: Xzar ofcourse (STOP TOUCHING ME!)
Ranger: Me since there is a severe lack of evil Ranger characters.
Cleric: WHO DARES PROD TIAX?!
Fighter/tank: Kagain

MC, Yukiko, Teddie, Naoto.

MC, Aigis, Ken, Junpei.

I can't remember why I ran these teams, but I'm sure they had some synergy.

[b/]FFVII[/b] - Cloud (have no choice but is awesome anyway), Tifa (kinda weak endgame but awesome midgame and after a few playthroughs I sort of grew to like her) Barret (Long range, awesome final weapon and ungarmax is ridiculously powerful) and he reminds me of B A Baracus.

[b/]Persona 4[/b]- main character (had no choice) Chie (galactic punt is awesome), yukiko (brilliant magic damage dealer) kanji (just love hitting people with chairs).

[b/]Last Story[/b]- Syrene and Lowell purely for the party banter (possibly one of my favourite pairings ever) and Mirania for healing

[b/]Mass Effect[/b] - Wrex (because he was awesome) Garrus (hated his character but he filled a role) Soldier Shepard all equipped with high powered sniper rifles with high explosive ammo, you overheat with every shot but the destruction was immense plus soldier shepard is pretty much invincible even insanity was cake with him (except husks for some reason they could still damage you).

[b/]Xenoblade Chronicles[/b] - Sharla (I liked shooting things and death shot made me feel badass) Fiora (really powerful and great fun to play and watch when you stack speedbuffs on her she just minces things) Melia (I liked using her abilities they were interesting shame her AI was naff) note: this team was definitely not the best just my favourite.

[b/]FF XIII[/b] - Lightning (good all rounder and awesome sentinel with the right equip and skills as she dodges seemingly everything) Vanille (she has death spell which helps later on and shes good as a saboteur) Fang (just an awesome damage dealer, not a bad saboteur either)

I dont usually run the best teams just ones I like unless im trying to take on the elite bosses or something in which case I go on power and ability alone regardless of whether I like them or not.

I almost always fill my party by who I like the most for whatever reason, not because of their abilities.

FFI: Fighter, Thief, Red Mage, White Mage - or something like that. Pimp hat is king.
FFVI: Locke, Shadow, Terra, Celes - Pretty much no other game could have a higher overall like-these-guys rating than this one.
FFVII: Cloud, Tife, Vincent/Cid
FFVIII: Squall, Rinoa, and.... whoever.
FFIX: Zidane, Freya, Garnet, Vivi
FFX: Tidus, Yuna, Auron - I would use just Auron if that was an option.
FFXII: Balthier, Basch, Ashe - you know, people complain about Vahn but all 3 of these guys are more main-charactery than Vahn
FFXIII: Lightning, Fang, Hope - making Hope the best Medic must have been a sick joke
Trigger: Crono, Marle, Frog
Cross: Serge, Kidd, Glenn - gee that looks familiar and why do they have to make Glenn trickier to recruit??
Pokemon: Charizard, Sandslash, doesn't matter who else.

Edit: added more Final Fantasy

Dupre, Shamino and Iolo FTW.

Though for games people have actually heard of...

ME2: Miranda and either Garrus, Grunt or Samara depending on the mission
ME3: Garrus and Javik for pretty much everything

Fallout 3 - Fawkes and Dogmeat.

Fallout: New Vegas - I beat most of the game with Boone and ED-E by my side, since I tend to fight long-ranged battles and they're the best sniping combo.

I don't usually make strong tactical decisions unless there are certain restrictions imposed upon me, like the magnetic cave in FF4 or the cultist tower, so I tend to just use whoever I like to use.

Knight/WhtWiz/BlckWiz/RedWiz. - I might've used something else for the fourth slot, but I can't deny that awesome hat.

Devout/Magus/Dragoon/Viking. - De magicks, dragoons kick ass and the viking because why not.

Terra, Celes, Edgar, Sabin. - High magic power, capable of defending against it, Edgar's tools and Sabin kicking the shit out of things. Felt like I had to bring Celes along after I failed to save Cid and I didn't wait for Shadow on the Floating Continent so I buggered that up too.

Cloud, Nanaki, Cid. - Possibly my favourite Cid of the series and Nanaki because I always liked the Gi cave sequence.

Squall, Quistis, Rinoa. - I find Zell, Irvine and Selphie annoying so these three make up the main group.

Zidane, Freya, Sarah, Vivi. - Freya because dragoons kick ass, Sarah to heal and Vivi for being the best black mage ever.

Auron, Wakka, Yuna. - Didn't like Rikku, Lulu, Tidus or Kimahri's abilities so didn't level them enough to get deep into the other sphere grid areas. Also, getting Lulu's celestial weapon is the most annoying thing ever. Wakka's got accuracy, Yuna heals, uses items and uses offensive spells and Auron because death only served to piss him off.

When choosing a party for an RPG, I tend to put all my eggs in one basket rather than use a balanced group, so I end up focusing on either attack or defence.

For example, in Xenoblade I my final party consisted of Shulk, Dunban and Fiora. Only Shulk could heal, but Dunban and Fiora had some defensive abilities, so it wasn't as much of a glass cannon-fest as you might think. Plus the damage they were able to dish out was just awesome. Because all three characters had lots of abilities of the same type, making chain attacks easy to pull off. Trust me, there is nothing more badass than carving the enemy up in a 3-round chain before having Shulk blast the enemies with the Monado.

Mass Effect has always been Garrus and Tali, they work so freaking well with Vanguard

My current playthrough of DA:O has me using Morrigan and Leliana with Alistair or Sten depends on situation

Pokemon has always been one very powers starter.

Chrono Trigger: Crono, Marle, Lucca. Why?
Crono = Luminare
Marle + Lucca = Andipode 3 (or Andipode Bomb 3 on DS)
