In a general sense, I mean; not specifically what games are your favorites individually.

Some of us are CRPG fans. Some of us dig more on the FPS style games, others stick mostly to fighters or puzzle games or flight combat types. We all stray from our familiar genres now and again, and sometimes our genre of choice can change over time, but we all find places where we say, I'm mostly into ________ type games.

What genre do you find yourself coming back to? And what is it about that genre that you think is so appealing to you, personally?

I'm probably more into First Person games than anything else. Now, normally that would consist of shooters, but I am more than happy to take a break and try out some of the more unique titles like Portal and Oblivion. But in general, I think the immersiveness of seeing through someone elses eye's is an awesome hook, and allows for some of the most graphically intense scenes. It isnt detached from the protagonist as third person games tend to be, and I think it often allows for some of the tightest controls. Im not willing to stay exclusively with First Person games, but I'd be sure to call it my favorite.

Fantasy Adventure. I think it's b/c I liked Conan the Babarian when I was little. Riding horseback, chopping off heads, stealing jewels, what's not to love? Plus I'm a naturist, snow and rain is hypnotic, if it's in the wilderness. Best of all are the mythical creatures you come across. It all feels mystical.

I like my First Person shooters like I like my women. Fast, furious and full of replayability!

Furious? Oh dears.

My taste is spread across too many genres. I like good storyline and characters generally.

I want to like FPS so bad! But I am usually stuck playing several RPG's at a time. I really like Okami and Shadow of the Colossus, to me gaming doesn't get much better than those two. and Katamari! Whatever that is..

I can't say that I prefer one genre over another; I just look for innovative and intriguing gameplay. I've discovered that I can find those elements in puzzle games as well as epic FPSs and RPGs.

well im a fan of action adventure. but stealth action has made me love life ever since i first played Splinter cell, i cant find a good one, there arent any others. also i recently picked up the first ghost recon, and i fell in love with the tactical squad based shooter, it feels like an rts with smart people for units:-D kinda what an rts should be, battle strategy rather than resource management.

jRPG's. I actually like convoluted, linear stories. It's usually like playing an anime. Also, the feeling of working your way up from a level 1 weakling to a level 99 god is enjoyable. As is min-maxing stats.

I also like western RPG's, RTS's, and 4x games.

Any FPS that has a great story, ie: half life, the darkness. awsome seeing it all from your own eyes and focusing on whatever you want and not what the developer wants you too.

Im with Larenxis and MikeyW on this one; Any FPS (or indeed game) with a good story and characters is usually enough to get me to play it. That, and any games that give a real challenge. Hardest difficulty is the only way to play the easy games these days.
When I first played Oblivion I started on the hardest difficulty. It took me 2 hours to get out of the first sewers, the rats killed me in like, 2 hits. Maximum stealth was required.

Huzzah for Hard Mode. I remember playing Megaman Zero 3 on my first run-through and not using any cyber elves because I thought it would make the game too easy. Subsequently, when beating the game and unlocking Hard Mode, I didn't find it to be a huge increase in difficulty, seeing as how the main thing that seperated Hard from Normal was that you couldn't use any cyber elves. It was still a good challenge, though.

I like platformers, beat-em-ups, and on-rail shooters. Pretty much any game that is tough and relies on twitch-reflexes, although I like the occasional RTS. Co-op mode is a nice bonus, too. Who doesn't have fond memories of playing a good beat-em-up with a friend?

I used to like RPG's for the whole customization aspect - being able to create your character to cater to your specific playing style. However, I eventually got tired of the whole luck-reliant, grind-based gameplay.

im mostly into shooters with good online play and a decent campaign, but ill give anything but racing and sport a try for two reasons 1. i suck at them and 2. im just not that interested in cars or sport.
