A very indepth (and unforgiving, you have been warned) Roguelike that has kept me hooked since I first discovered it a few years ago.

I'm looking for a new one, how long do games last (at first) and how does it compare to nethack (if you know)?

Do you mean how long does a full game take, start to finish? I honestly couldn't tell you - I've never finished it. You recall I said it was unforgiving? Although I hold my failure up as a measure of the quality and depth of A.D.O.M: the fact is that it keeps me coming back week after week, month after month, year after year despite the fact it keeps kicking my ass. And there are many similarities with NetHack, but in my (subjective) opinion A.D.O.M is the superior game.

I meant how long till I should expect to die at first, I was expecting it to take a hell of a long time to get used to and be able to survive for ages. But I've downloaded it and giving it a fiddle now to find out myself anyway.

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good freeware games. In return here are some of my favourites:

"the white chamber" - Short adventure game with interesting horror elements.
"Cave Story" - Nice run and gun platformer.
"Gun Girl 2" - Shoot lots of zombies in a metroidvania world with some nice sawblades and other weapons.
"Eversion" - Simple little platformer that gets more interesting as the game progresses. Avoid spoilers for this one.
"Iji" - An interesting platformer offering you choice of routes, upgrades and lethality. Good plot with lots of little logbooks to find.
"Genetos" - Shoot-em-up that takes you on a tour of the genre's history, becoming a beautiful bullet hell on higher difficulties.
"The Spirit Engine 2" - Decent little RPG with a good soundtrack.

"Synesthesia" - Program that turns any midi into a guitar-hero-esque sequence of scrolling bars that can be slowed and played (with scoring) on an electric keyboard. Great if you ever wanted to play a song but have trouble with sheet music.

I recommend all of these. Have you come across any good ones?

The Eversion on Steam is an updated version with improved graphics. The original version is (was?) free and doesn't really lose anything for the non-enhanced backgrounds.

Also: Hydorah: A seriously difficult side-scrolling shoot-em-up. It's fun once you get past the artificial difficulty of giving you limited saves.

N+ is fun for pixel perfect platforming but hard as hell.

Distorted Travesty has some fun moments (a great boss fight with X springs to mind) but gets incredibly sadistic after a few levels so only hardened masochists should expect to get to the end.

I stumbled onto this awesome little game. It's a point and click adventure with multiple endings. I managed to get one of the endings in about 5 minutes, it wasn't a good ending but it made me laugh so hard.

Anyway here is it. Chivalry is not dead.

The site also has hundreds of freeware games so go nuts.

My point was they aren't all in one place and I don't have the time to look up addresses for them all again, especially as they are all easily found anyway.

Sorry, couldn't resist. They don't come from a single website. I came across most of them on the Freeware Games page of TV Tropes. I tend to take the view if someone bothered to write a page for them there there must be something to the game.

I recommend Elona.

It's pretty much what you get when you mix a life RPG with a rouge like which is much more forgiving than most other roguelikes but still pretty easy to die but at least death is a small slap on the wrist.

Other than that, the only thing I can think of is cave story and Iji but those were already recommended

If we are talking mods too:
Deus Ex-The Nameless Mod: A massive, fully voiced total conversion mod with classic Deus Ex gameplay, branching storylines and lots of side-quests. I can't recommend this enough.
Deus Ex-The Malkavian Mod: A hilarious mod where you wander round UNATCO having insane conversations with characters stitched together out of Deus Ex Convos. Manderley is a pidgeon who raps.
Portal: The Portal: The Flash Version (TFV) Map Pack, a nice long set of reasonably challenging but not excessive chambers.
Half Life 2: Dear Esther: A haunting wander round an island. Kind of unnerving in a psychological unease-type way. You haven't played a game like this before.

Another vote for Nethack, wasted a lot of time on that game in school.

Yume Nikki is another good one, kind of like LSD for the PS1. It's a horror game, but it doesn't try to startle you. All it does is put you in a world of vaguely absurd, surreal rooms and lets you explore.

Embric of Wulfhammer's Castle is a favorite of mine as well. While it was made in RPG maker and looks/sounds like a classic SNES game, it's more like a visual novel where you can actually control your character. Specifically, you play as the princess of the kingdom, and pretty much every female character is more than a little gay for you. Features multiple endings, tons of branching plot paths, some good writing and humor, etc. Also slightly NSFW, but absolutely not porn.

I came across a fantastic video containing snippets of 100 freeware games of 2010:

Through that I came across Dust Force, a beautiful Parkour Platformer with wonderful animation and flowing gameplay. Here is a trailer:

The game isn't finished and the demo release has some significant performance issues (lots of slowdown when there are too many particles/afterimages) but it is still really enjoyable. It also has a level editor so you can make your own parkour challenges. I love the way the dust guides you along the right path through a level, I think that's a great way of fusing gameplay and premise.

This is how I think Sonic games should be: not super-fast but smooth, flowing parkour controls as you move around levels. If you replaced the dust with rings I think this would be my perfect Sonic game. The fact one level takes place in a forest and sees you freeing animals re-enforces that analogy.
