Yay First forum post!

Anyway, I was wondering on the escapist what genres of gaming people play and why? If they love a particular genre for whatever reason or if they think that something like RTS's should all be confined to gamings dark past. I was considering a poll but then realized if I tried to make on I would miss someone's favourite genre and be flamed.

I'll start the ball rolling with saying I have always preferred RTS's for no other reason than making as many of the weakest cheapest troops and sending them to die for me. I think I may have something of a God complex. I have to say my least favourite genres are most probably RPGs, especially turn based massive epics like star ocean or Final Fantasy I just don't have the time, the attention span or patience to deal with selecting attack and watching a cinematic while the most skill I use is pressing A. Anyways opinions? or anything about what you find most enjoyable to play.

Favorite: RPGs of the J and W kind. Not so much the overly ambitious Eu kind. Turn based or real time. I like an inventive leveling/combat system. It doesn't need to be deep.

SaGa Frontier 1 + 2, Final Fantasy 8, Legend of Mana, Oblivion, Morrowind

Least favorite: RTS. Can't stand it. Keep it away from me. That micromanagement bullshit, the fucking tech trees, all this build up. Only to have all that effort wasted at the end of the match, win or lose. When everything disappears. Hour long multiplayer matches, lengthy campaigns drug out by the usually slow build up. Nothing carries over from match to match...

I'm a fan of RPG's first and foremost.
I simply love attributing my characters with better and better items until the wee hours of the mornings.

My least favorite genres are probably sports titles, granted there have been a few that I've liked quite a bit.

You do know that Star Ocean is not turn based right? Maybe play a game before hating it?

My fave is RPGs. My least fave is the FPS. That is all.
Oh yeh my bad. I did play star ocean, but I didn't mean to lump it in with turn based more the whole "massive epic" part. It came on three disks! Three! Once again, my bad.

There is a U in favourite when you from Britain

My favorite isn't easy to decide. My favorite game is an RTS, so i guess I'll go with RTS.
I really do like RPGs, FPSs, Puzzle games, and Hack&Slash too.

I really enjoy RPGs, they just have an immersion factor which other genres just don't grant me.

My least favourite would have to be... I actually don't know. I'll enjoy pretty much any games which are made well. I guess I don't really see the fun of most racing games.

FPSs are my favorite with RPGs close in second. TPSs are coming back for me with Splinter Cell: Conviction, omg that game is fun. I just feel so badass playing it. There's this part of the game where I can tag four enemies in one room then bust down the door, emp the place, execute all for of them then hand to hand kill the fifth guy. Then climb a pipe tag four more guys, land on top of guy (killing him), emp again and execute the four I tagged. Climb another pipe, open a window, toss a guy out the window, shimmy across and tag and kill the remaining three guys. That's all in the span of 4 or so minutes.

FPSs, some RPGs, and RTSs...

If someone was ever twisted enough to mix all three I'd crap myself...

The OP is British. Ergo, they spell it differently.

Favorite: RPG, Adventure games, Horrors. Plot, story > everything else in my 'good game elements' hierarchy. Additionally, I love mysteries, and in those 3 genres I am most likely to find those.

Least Favorite: Hack&Slash. I beat Dungeon Siege but never really had that much fun, people who recommended it to me had. Never managed to get past the second act in Diablo II, Torchlight bored me before even started for real. Clicking enemies to death with little to none interesting plot points (see the point about favorite games) just doesn't appeal to me. My friend absolutely loves Diablo though, and there's nothing wrong with it.

I could imagine that, would be like military version of simcity 4. With the possibility of using a first person camera angle. And much better graphics.
