A band called Grizzly Bear. They have only one song I know, but I love it to pieces. It's the most listened to song on my iPod.

For me it's Edenbridge, they're yet to make a song I don't like and they've been in playlist for well over 4 years.

<spoiler=And you simply can't go wrong with a song like this>

My all time favorite band is a post punk/noise group called Big Black. They had a pretty big cult following in the mid-late 80s but whenever I bring up the name everyone thinks I'm talking about Rob Dyrdek's bodyguard (hate that guy). Someone please tell me I'm not the only one who's heard of these guys.

Some other good ones are Mission of Burma, Killing Joke, Rapeman, The Mad Capsule Markets, D.N.A, Contortions, Mars, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, 8-Eyed Spy, Suicide,Joy Division, and i know they don't really count as obscure anymore but Sonic Youth.

are "the streets" obscure enough?
wolfmother
the gaslight anthem
the airborne toxic event
and a whole bunch of german artist nobody on this forum ever heard of because of the language

edit: at least one count of ninja'ed detected
Wolfmother is so far from obscure it isn't funny.

I don't know how obscure these bands are elsewhere, but I would consider the following to be rather obscure;
The Automatic
Cog
Mammal
Stone Parade
Tokyo Police Club
Violent Soho

You guys who are referring to Streetlight and Reel Big Fish should know that they are fairly popular within the genre. Ska is on a downswing in popularity is all.

If you like Streetlight check out Catch-22's "Keasbey Nights" album. Their frontman during that time is apparently the current frontman for Streetlight, you will probably recognize the title track.

I used to work at a coffee house with two of the members of this band. I'm not sure if they are still members or not, they were assholes who thought they were cooler than shit. I suppose that's par for the course with musicians though.

As far as my own likes go I am not sure that they are really all that obscure.

Darkest of the Hillside Thickets was probably one of the more obscure bands I like though I have come to find that one or more of their songs have been used in Guitar Hero.
Here's a fun cover they do..

Mostly they do Lovecraft inspired "horror punk".

Zoe Keating is a great avant garde cellist, formerly of Rasputina. Rasputina is another favourite which has already been mentioned. Also they are incredibly popular within the goth/industrial scene.

The Pogues are FAR from obscure. Definitely good though. I've actually been on an on-again-off-again quest for good "Irish" rock and punk.
Siobhan is probably one of the better I have found, and probably fairly obscure.

If you'd like some ideas of good "Irish" rock/punk bands to check out let me know.

edit: There's a forum I go to occasionally, http://forums.sykospark.net/ , that is devoted primarily to various and more obscure musical genres and their attendant subcultures. If anyone is interested in looking for more "obscure" music you will likely find someone there who will help you find more of what you like. Note though that the place is full of 1337ist assholes who may well tell you that your taste in music is shit and laugh at what you think is obscure. Don't take them seriously.

Awesome. I picked up Keasbey Nights on a lark since I am a fan of the book Catch-22 and I found that really enjoyed them. Unfortunately when I decided to pick up another album by them, Permanent Revolution, it was not nearly as good. I am told this is because the frontman (now of Streetlight) left. Do you know any other of their albums that are good or any particular Streetlight albums you would suggest?

Along in my quest for irish music I found a cool Irish ska band called The Trojans...

I've been searching this thread and nobody has posted Infected Mushroom yet.

Infected Mushroom is one of my favourite bands. Although I am a metal fan, these guys make some kind of trance I can listen to any time.

Here are some of their songs:

Heavyweight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXjNB43WRBk
Poquito mas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP_4rXWSiCw
I'm the supervisor:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTlBsmlQSII
Converting vegetarians: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dqc8JNzniUc

Note: that last song has nothing against vegetarians. Infected Mushroom are people from Israel who choose their Lyrics purely on how it sounds rhythmically. This makes great music, but the lyrics look like they're on... well, shrooms.

I fucken love you for sharing that, I must look for them immediately.

See also: Lee Presson and the Nails. They style themselves "Goth Swing" though its pretty much standard sounding swing.

edit: Also see also: Byron Blocker and the Offbeats. Saw these guys at The Viper Room (Hollywood) and need to plug them. Like an homage to Tom Waits and Nick Cave at the same time...
