The other day I was listening to some smug commercial radio station claiming they were playing "Your favourite music." Now I'm sure that some of these bland middle of the road 3:30 exercises in sheer banality do in fact qualify as someone's favourite music, but it sure ain't mine. But it got me thinking.

Now I myself do a little radio show at Uni and I hit on the idea of doing a show tonight where I only played people's favourite songs.

I've asked friends, fellow students and I thought I'd rope some of you in as well.

So go on, tell me what your favourite song is and why!

The show will be tonight at 7pm (GMT) on www.gu2.co.uk

(I did a brief search. Similar threads but not too similar.)

Jimi Hendrix' Voodoo Child; because the intro riff is so badass it blows my mind every time.

Hmm.
I'd have to say overall it's Low Man's Lyric by Metallica. There's a lot of emotion in it, and the other instruments other than the standard guitar/bass/drums give it a different edge. Plus the echo on the guitar is absolutely beautiful. It's hard to describe quite why I love it so much, but I do.

That's quite a badass song. Time isn't usually a problem if I think the song is definitely good enough (Master Of Puppets, Lateralus, Free Bird, Bat Out Of Hell... Tubular Bells) but I won't be able to get in the editing studio today to cut the swears. Nevermind, good shout though!

Without a doubt, If You Tolerate This Then Your Children Will Be Next by Manic Street Preachers (sorry for the lack of a link to the video, I don't know how to embed).

I like the lyrics of the song the most, partly because it describes almost the pointlessness of war and how patriotic people who sign up for the wars are ("If I can shoot rabbits then I can shoot fascists" was something someone who signed up for the Spanish Civil War told his brother). The main chorus line is something that functions at face value and in depth. In depth it's a reference to a republican poster asking people to sign up. At face value, I think it's an important lesson that sometimes, if things are really going to hell in society (like it seems to be now), you should do something about it or your children will likely go through the same things. This is especially true when it comes to problems with the government. The government never changes drastically and favouringly without some civil disobedience like protesting or even rioting. I'm not saying people should go murder others at the drop of a hat, but if you tolerate all the things you hate about your country, then your children will be next.

Ahhhh, about 20 minutes late I'm afraid. But thanks for checking out the show!

Thanks for your suggestions guys. Low Man's Lyric was also a great suggestion, I used to love the ReLoad album (no matter how unpopular it was with the metal tastemakers.) Keep the discussion going, I'm always up for hearing some great songs!

Cheers

Frontier Psychiatry by The Avalanches. No matter what kind of mood I'm in, it never fails to make me smile and I've not gotten sick of listening to it yet.

Dang, I shouldn't of grabbed something to eat. Oh well. I think another song I could mention is Zombie by The Cranberries. It's based around another obscure war, The Troubles. I don't really have a reason to like it, but I find it a generally enjoyable song.

By the way, any idea when the "listen back" thing starts working for each show? There was some generally enjoyable song choices and it seems to have a higher average of enjoyable songs than most radio shows I know of.

Dstryr/Dstryr by Lostprophets at the moment.

The rage in the song gives it punk-esque momentum, which it sustains through two verses, two choruses, a bridge and a final chorus and ending. The lead singer is literally screaming out the lyrics in the choruses (Destroyer! Destroyer! Religion needs a new employer! I've got the rope to hang your Jesus even higher!), accompanied by the central guitar riff and the additional vocals in the background.

I want to see that live.

Survive, Collapse, Hero of War (Rise Against); Know Your Enemy, iViva la Gloria! (Green Day); Welcome to the Black Parade (My Chemical Romance); most System of a Down songs; Last Train Home, Burn Burn, Can't Stop...Got A Date With Hate, A Town Called Hypocrisy, Can't Catch Tomorrow (all Lostprophets. I maybe like them too much)
