I have a thing for purple.

And names that start with T.

And yes, if I had to choose I'd push Tali out of the way to get to Twilight.
I'm sorry, but in that pose, I'd ride Tali like a mechanical bull.

So, there's one.

You just struck the core of Misato's relationship with Shinji. She is more or less a mother to Shinji, but the only way she can seem to express affection, whether it's consoling someone else or finding solace for herself, is through physical means. Which is what makes their relationship so fucking weird.
Meh. I think Shinji should have just got in while he had the chance. If you're going to get someone to pop your cherry, might as well be a super-hot military commander with a sense of humour, right? Right?

Hmm... this seems to have gotten a little off-topic. More fanservice!

All three of the main female characters of the show represent an aspect of womanhood. Or should I say, represent a side of how men see women.
Hang on, are those three characters Misato/Rei/Asuka, or Misato/Asuka/Ritsuko? Because I can kind of see Misato=Mother, Asuka=Woman (temperamental, emotional and prone to random acts of violence) and Rei=Scientist (detached, removed, coldly analytical), but then again I might have just taken the Magi symbolism and run with it.
Prepare to get even more off-topic.

Actually it's Misato=Mother, Rei=Fantasy, and Asuka=Reality.

Misato is the Mother for reasons already mentioned.

Rei is the Fantasy in that she is perfect and obedient. She will do whatever she is told to do no matter what the personal consequences may be. But the flipside of that is that she only does anything if she's told to, apart from eating, sleeping, and taking general care of herself. When you see her apartment it's lifeless and grey. And when Asuka first introduces herself to Rei she says, "let's be friends", to which Rei responds, "I will if I'm ordered to". She has no will of her own.

Asuka is the Reality in that she represents all, or atleast a lot, of the character traits men and people in general find uncomfortable. She's rude, she's in your face, she's offensive, loud, obnoxious. In short, she's a *****. She's comprised almost entirely out of faults. And it's these faults that Shinji is scared to death of. Which is why Asuka is the perfect match for him, because she doesn't coddle him or makes him feel at ease like Misato (Mother) or Rei (fantasy) tend to do. She's the dose of reality that he needs in order to change. This is why she paired with Shinji in that 'dance' episode eventhough Rei syncs up with him perfectly. She's in his face, and drives him into a corner untill there's no other option left for him but to assert himself and go right through her. Which is what that 'strangle' scene in the middle of EoE represents; Asuka is being a ***** to him, but instead of whimpering off like pussy like Shinji usually does he starts choking the shit out of her.

This also accounts for the fact why Asuka and Rei can't stand eachother.

Well that's enough fan-blathering...

Bu...where...I mean...just...HOW?

How on earth does a female skeleton have breasts? Are they just velcroed onto her ribcage? Are her boobs made of bone?

My mind is boggling at the thought...
She's female.
In Marvel and DC comics, this means she must have breasts, no matter the circumstances (Small children don't yet count as female).

And people still try to explain away the sexism and blatant pandering in mainstream western comics.

There is only one I can think of. May from Pokemon Advanced.

Forgot about her, I always refer to as the female Pokemon trainer from Gen-3 but yeah, I like her character design more than the other female trainers.

Damn... that's a whole bunch of subtext I never even noticed.

I disagree with one part of that though:

The idea that Asuka is 'the right match' for Shinji. Of course, this is all IMO.

Anyways, as I see it, Shinji as a character responds better to affection than he does aggression. He's spent his whole life starved of it, having been abandoned by his father, and we see that he will gladly receive even the smallest act of affection. The fact that just two words of approval from his father after a mission are enough to (temporarily) validate his father in his eyes shows how affectionately starved the poor kid is.

More importantly, if I remember right, it's only when Shinji is treated with affection that he is able to deal with the situations he is faced with. Remember, it was not his father's initial letter that brought him to Tokyo 3, a letter we see ripped up, but Misato's photo. When Shinji ran away from Tokyo-3, it was because of a lack of affection. It was only Misato, the only character to have treated him with any warmth, who was able to bring him back. Conversely, when Misato goes through her own personal crisis and withdraws that affection, we see that Shinji ultimately withdraws himself as an individual. He becomes unable to cope with the weight of being an Evangelion pilot and the associated horrors, such as Rei's death.

As much as Asuka lashes out at Shinji, we have to ask, is that really good for him. In any other case, I would agree that a lack of 'mollycoddling' wouldn't do him any harm. But that is precisely Shinji's problem: he has spent his whole life without any form of mollycoddling. His issue is that he's already been forced to live an independent life without any strong parent figure. We can see in the show that he's already learnt how to cook for himself and look after himself. It's implied that he's doing most of the running of the flat, what with doing most of the chores and Misato constantly being passed out drunk. Shinji is a kid who has had to make do without the support and love that most kids get to receive, and in that instance I'm not so sure that a large dose of Asuka would be all that good for him. His growth as a character is tied to how much affection he is given, and Asuka is simply not the type to give that affection readily. If Shinji were a regular boy, then she would be a great way to show him that life can be full of trials and obstacles, but Shinji isn't a regular boy, and his problem is exactly the opposite: he knows life is full of obstacles, but he needs someone to show that it can be full of warmth and love too. Hence why, I would say, in thematic terms Misato is the most important female to him, even if the implications are squicky squicky squicky.

As you can probably tell, I'm not the biggest fan of Asuka. As a piece in a larger narrative, she's absolutely fine, and is a great reflection of many of the shows themes and ideas, but as an actual person I just cannot like her, even if she did have a somewhat traumatic past.

Holy mother of off-topic discussion Batman!

Incidentally, what are your thoughts on the direction the Rebuild has taken?

Hideaki Anno seems to have strongly gone down the route of pairing Rei and Shinji together? I'm intrigued to see the direction that the series takes it, given that Rei has strong ties with both Shinji and Gendo, and I can't imagine either ignoring the other's affections for Rei for much longer. My guess is that Anno has decided to really emphasise the Freudian angle by pushing the fact that Rei is partly a clone of Yuri, making her more of a mother figure, and that this will be used as a way to push Shinji and Gendo into conflict with each other. But we've still got two films to go, and it could turn out a number of different ways...
*cracks knuckles*

Shinji is such a screwed up kid that delicate care is no longer a solution, he needs shock therapy, and Asuka is the one to give it to him. With the mother complex that he has, Misato is no good for him. And he's always running and hiding from reality so Rei isn't an option either. Asuka is the only person who ignites a change in Shinji by confronting him.

When Shinji is given affection or praise he soaks it up like a starving plant. But the series makes it very clear that you can't build your self esteem on other people's praise, because then the moments that you don't receive it will make the whole thing fall apart. Two little boys snickering at him on the bus already shatters it. He needs self reliance, not with daily chores or making his own meals, but of the heart and mind.
In the original show everything basically revolves around Shinji. Everything. You can sort of say that Shinji is so fucked up that the universe itself is turned upside down and the entire human race put on the brink of extinction in order to cure him. In the first half of the show Shinji is mentally and emotionally built up by introducing characters to him and letting him bond with them. The second half is each of these characters being torn away from him in traumatizing ways. The coup de grace is dealt when Kaworu appears in Shinji's hour of need, when he has no one left anymore. Kaworu is for all intent and purposes Shinji's soulmate, the one person who totally understands him and will love him unconditionally. And then Shinji is forced to kill him.
This is the final test to see how well Shinji can rely and survive on his own sense of self worth and individuality after having had many forms of human contact (which is what ultimately shapes us into who we are), and having lost them (which also happens to all of us). It's a scarring, traumatizing, and fucked up way to help someone deal with their issues, but that's Evangelion.

As for Rebuild... I'm not to crazy about it. All that chunky human drama is what made me fall in love with Neon Genesis Evangelion in the first place, and to see it drained away in the new movies leaves very little for me apart from the visual spectacle. Which was absolutely beautiful, mind you, and I'm glad I was able to get them on blu-ray. Seeing all the updated tech of the world of NGE in crisp HD is a sight to behold. And the end sequence of rebuild 2 had my jaw falling through the floor.

With that said...
