Super Mario on the NES and I hated it. Back then I already knew a lives-system was gamings biggest flaw.

I think it was Super Street Fighter II on the SNES, and I think the AI is just as cheap now as it was back then.

Hmm... I have some vague memories of playing Mario 3 when I was like 5 or something. Other than that, it was probably Pac-Mac or Space Invaders in a bowling alley arcade, circa 1991.

I think it was Contra for the NES. It was at a friend's house when I was about 6 years old. I had heard about video games but I really didn't understand what they were all about at the time. Needless to say, I died immediately, but I was still amazed by the fact that you could control something on a TV screen. To this day, I suck at run and gun shooters and don't really care for them, but Contra was at least impressive enough for me to beg my parents for an NES for Christmas.

Also, the fact that so many of you remember PS1 and N64 games as your first video game makes me feel like an old man.

I cant remember the name of it, but it was a game on an old amstrad machine (i think it was an amstrad, i was very young, i remember it was a greenscreen machine though. my dad bought it around 1988 - 89 i guess) and it had a couple of games on a disc with it, one of them was like the first incarnation of donkey kong, one of them was a skiing game, and one was a 2d side scrolling space shooter thing. these were the first games i played. When he first got the machine i was a bit too young to be able to coordinate efficiently, so i would move the ship up and down with the arrow keys, and yell "FIRE!" at my dad so he would hit the space bar when i needed to shoot!
Good times!

I'm not old enough for it to have been new but my first games system was a handed down Commodore 64 - fuck yeh - and the first game I can properly remember was Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and some random game on a spacestation shooting aliens.
As for something that would have been current at the time it would be Tetris

Minesweeper!

But my first REAL game was driver 3 for PS2.

I was a late bloomer in the gaming world. With women on the other hand....

Alex Kidd for the Sega Master System. The one that came built in with the console. Got it on my 4th birthday.

That game was awesome. I still remember playing co-op with a friend on the lumberjack level, being on the floor laughing as we were being chased through the bushes by these giants blokes with axes or chainsaws or something.

That's one game they need to make a remake of... or I guess Left 4 Dead would be kinda the same thing, but without the humour.

Something on the Amiga, for sure. That's really all I know. But Rodland is the first game I REMEMBER, and that still rocks! :D
