Okay then, I'm going to see Reverend and the Makers play live at Leeds University Union a week on Monday. Should be a great gig for indie rock fans, plus Jon Mclure (front man, the eponymous 'Reverend') has a habit of sometimes playing free gigs before or after the show in the car park or ou front of the venue of the actual gig. A little treat for the fans.

However, I haven't really been to many gigs before. I went to one done by my brother's friend's rock school a few years ago (not too bad actually, though it was a bit boring and was outdoors, while it was raining). I saw the Vengaboys live at my university (it was the Fresher's Ball and it was shit), and I saw The Young Knives also at the Fresher's Ball, which was actually much better. Aside from that I haven't seen many gigs, so the Reverend gig will be my first real one.

So, what was yours? Do any of you remember the first concert you went to? Who was playing, where was it, who opened it, were they any good? Any funny or painful anecdotes to tell?

First gig I went to was a band called InMe, supported by X is Loaded. Both bands have pretty much disappeared now, didn't care enough to buy the albums. But I had a good night anyway, small venue shows are the best.

Yeah, small venue shows are pretty great. I was at my Summer Ball last year at university and it was like a festival type thing, everything outdoors like Glastonbury, and although it was pretty good (despite the rain all night), it wasn't as good as those first gigs I saw in the small clubs at university. There's a place in Leeds called The Cockpit that do a lot of live shows, and it's usually pretty packed, but it's really small. Plus they have club nights after live acts and the bands usually stay for a drink and a night with the fans. I also live right around the corner from a similar place, Brudenell Social Club, popular with students, so if anyone's ever in Leeds at a gig (indie rock usually) then they might see me there :D

Last concert I saw was Trivium in May in Adelaide. Black Tide opened for them and Heaven Shall Burn played after that. Was a pretty good night.

Mine will be November 2nd when I go and see Pink. Apparently her shows are supposed to kick ass.

(First time I've seen a performer at their own concert as part of a tour, I've been to festivals where a bunch of bands play before)

Yeah, but seriously, at Leeds everyone hated them, it was even in the student newspaper about how bad they were (in the 'Gigs' review section), and yet the Union organisers still insisted on booking them again this year! How stupid can you get? Thank God I didn't go, I'd probably be too traumatised to return to the Union after that, and that would really piss me off as they have a great little juice bar and internet cafe there...

I've played more gigs than I've seen.

I've been to a handful of local shows but only a few big ones. Living End last march which was great untill I got knoock in the head and had to go home. My next show was Sound of spring, which I got in for free. Unfortunatly I mixed (legal) pills with crappy beer and crappy food and ended up throwing up.

I haven't had a lot of luck with big shows

Hopefully Soundwave will be better =D

U2 at Twickenham in 2005. It was good, but not as good as this year at Wembley, that just kicked arse

I saw inme back in the day too. They were supported by Biffy Clyro, who went on to become really big I think? Far bigger than inme at any rate.

My first real gig was Muse in Wolverhampton in 2001, just after the origin of symmetry album was released. It was incredible and one of my favourite gigs I've ever been to, and I've been to (and played) a lot. Hundred Reasons supported that one and they went on to be quite big too.

We always call them shows when you're a spectator and a gig if you play in it.

Anyway Nirvana when I was 11. In Kansas City with my older brothers.

Video Games Live back in 2005. It was at the Hollywood Bowl with teh Philharmonics playing all the music. They also had certain people on stage acting out to add a little more interesting then watching people play intruments.

The *sigh* Blue Man group a forever ago
Just load and I found it thoroughly unenjoyable. So I refused to go back to any concert since.

Yup, I went and saw the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra play Mendelssohns 1st Piano Concerto, Bartoks 1st Piano Concerto and Beethoven's 7th Symphony. It was absolutely amazing, they performed his 7th so well, and I was quite taken with Mendelssohns piece as well (not as good as his concerto for piano and strings, but oh well). Bartok's wasn't much I didn't think.

Yeah, Google seems to enjoy making that same mistake too. I'd never even heard of The Reverend Horton Heat until I was searching for the new Reverend and the Makers album on google this evening... :s
