For me, the most impactful memories I have from gaming are (relatively) recent ones: Jade Empire and Mass Effect 1.

For a variety of subjective reasons, of all the games I've ever played, those were the two that I was the most emotionally invested in. I genuinely felt depressed when they ended, because I was so attached to the characters and the universe.

I still get a mix of emotions when I hear Anthem of the Tyrant [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIRXXswApik] from JE or Love Theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECcDavzJGzU]/M4 Part 2 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcrDWAuyqtc] from ME.

For emotional investment, probably Dragon Age II (stop right there, I've heard all the complaints). I really cared about most of the people in the party, and minor characters like Hawke's mother.

For memories in general? When I was about 10, my mother bought Conker's Bad Fur Day for me and my brother. When we realized what it was, we gleefully hid in the basement and played for many hours (at least, he played; as younger brother my job was to run to the console and hit the off switch if we heard parents on the stairs). Whenever we fight, we can still defuse it by calling each other "Sons of Bitches and Cats!"

I've got two big ones.

One was one of my best memories with my dad. I had just gotten my PS2 and was really excited. Then one weekend while my Mom and sister were out on some Mother-daughter retreat, my dad got the original Lego Star Wars right when it came out, and we played through the whole thing straight that one weekend. It was an absolute blast.

The other one was earlier when I was about 11 or 12, and my sister's friend brought over Kingdom Hearts. She was at the end and she thought it would be fun if we all handed the controller back and forth while attempting to beat the final boss. I had no experience with the game, so I thought I would just be messing around with it and not getting anywhere, since both of them had much more experience. However, I actually picked up on the controls really fast and was able (over several attempts), to beat the first boss. Then the next one. At that point they just let me tackle it all alone and I worked for an hour to take down the rest of the stages of the boss 'til I got to the end. That was the point where I realized how fun gaming could be and really got emphatic about it.
