Resident Evil 4 is perched rather jauntily on my shelf, waiting for the day when I can finally get over my irrational fear of getting skewered by a pitchfork and actually play the damned thing.

This is what you get for jumping from JRPGs to third person shooters.

Landing an airplane in the city in Saints Row 2. Or just flying an airplane and not immediately crashing from trying to pull off 'madd trix'.

Dracula on I Wanna Be The Guy

I had gone on the Right-hand path (where you have to dodge the falling moon) and had beaten Mecha Birdo (which was no mean feat, especially considering I've never played any game from that era (not even Megaman!))

Dracula took me two days, and on the first, I was screaming and literally smashing the keyboard with my angry, achey fists.

After I beat him, I stopped playing the game. It was funny, but far too stressful for me, and I think that beating Dracula, especially considering I've never played any of those platformer games from the _-bit eras, was my proudest moment of gamer "cred"
I can't agree with you more, Dracula is a cheap-ass bastard, and I hope to never face that boss again. although I'm still playing it though, I'm currently stuck on the metroid level.
Man dracula is like the funnest boss in that game. He is hard for sure but unlike bowser he isn't brutally painful every time you try. seriously bowser was the worst boss in history. waiting to get through his first few stages just to die is painful. If anything was my white whale it was bowser from IWBTG

Good luck on metroid it may be alot of trial and error but once you have it you have it for life.

As for white whales conquered, about a week before Mass Effect 2 came out I resolved to get all 1200 Gamerscore in the original. Which meant a lot of obscure ability achievements and almost all the squad member ones. It took about four playthroughs, but I made my deadline.

Go read Moby Dick, then come back and give your reply.

My white whale is Icewind Dale, really liked the game, just never could finish it, now I lost my copy...my whale has won...

Ooh, forgot about that game. I dropped at least two hours trying to land a helicopter on a pirate ship. 'Nuff said.

That level in the single player of Modern Warfare 2 where you have to defend a computer in a safehouse from incoming enemies.

I HATE that level.

I used to when I was a kid, particularly finishing Adventure of Link (I finally did when I was seventeen). I just don't play that much anymore because I am always too broke to buy new consoles and keep my box current enough to run most games (despite the fact that I hate MMOs and floating-gun games).

I think the only game that has driven me close to insane was FFVIII, but I gave up on defeating Adel (sp?) because my basic attack was only doing 75hp worth of damage. That was almost ten years ago and I no longer have any of my PSX games... because I am a short-sighted idiot.

Left 4 Dead 1 and 2. On Expert.
Only use pistols.
Why do I punish myself?
Not to brag... but I had a pretty easy time doing that... I got Akimbo Assassin easily on Expert, but that's mostly due to me being extremely lucky and getting an amazing team who actually worked together.
I tried doing it on my own.

What a fool I was...

Sorry but...

I don't understand anything that you're saying in the OP. Like, at all. What's the question?
A gaming task that becomes more of an all-consuming obsession the more you fail at it. My example is trying to complete Fallout 3 without dying even once (and as most people are aware, there are far too many places in that game where even a strong character can slip and get blown up by something.)
OT: Ah, OK.

Well, I did set myself the goal of clearing every single white marker on the map in The Saboteur.

I failed.
I did that. I spent over 50 hours in the game but I did it.. Although I am not particularly proud of that.. I also spent something like 3 days straight trying and finally getting the untouchables achievement in l4d(Without doing any lame cheats btw).

games I've beaten without losing a life
Wow, that's some hardcore gaming...

I don't think I could ever torture myself like that, but yeah Fallout 3 would be the one game I'd be fairly confident in achieving it with too.

In fact I'm 26 hours into my latest character and as far as I can remember the only time I died was from stupidly walking off an overpass while trying to get a nice vista saved :D
I wouldn't count that as a death for "hardcore" purposes because it didn't occur in the run of normal gameplay. Likewise I don't count any death due to bugs (falling through a seam in the scenery that should be solid, for example).

I made myself get 100% completion in Final Fantasy X-2. Subjecting oneself to THAT is total dedication.

I'd also like to give Metroid Prime an honorable mention because I always tell myself that I am going to play through that game, but I tend to lose interest after a few hours. Of course, I wind up forgetting where I was supposed to go, getting lost, and having to start a new game. 'Tis a damn shame, since I loved the 2D Metroid titles.

Which title? Because 3 and S&N were very easy.
The original, man. With its vertigo-inducing special stages, it absolutely wrecked my 5-year-old constitution.
