Since I heard of the release of the Collector's Edition for Journey, it feels like I've been walking on air. I went through the game in about six hours at a friend's house, taking in the sights and atmosphere. Going into the game blind, I had no idea what was part of the game and what wasn't. I met other Journeyers along the way, and each one left such a strong impression.
The first one was vocal and chatty, constantly chirping and jumping around happily. They only had a little scarf, shorter than mine, but they made up for it with sheer enthusiasm by surfing the carpet-creatures whenever they could. I was so into it I thought that they were part of the game.
I lost him at the underground city and met another. This one was wearing a white cloak and only chirped quietly. S/he stuck to my side like glue and recharged my scarf every time I jumped. When those metal snakes came alive, s/he kept trying to herd me to the side, leading me carefully from safe zone to safe zone, even leading me to a glyph.
I lost white cloak at the end of the area and met a red cloak at the tower, a loud chirper who loved gliding off the end of the scarf paths to see how far they could go. We fooled around for almost ten minutes, flying unrestricted and freely with the beautiful golden haze buoying us up. I sat in front of the TV laughing like crazy with a wide smile.
The snowy mountain found me with a different partner once again, a white cloak that appeared out of nowhere it seemed. As I struggled futilely through the snow, not quick enough to hide behind the stones as gusts of wind ate away my strength, my little character suddenly lit up and I saw them, camouflaged by the snow. This white cloak stayed behind me the entire time, pushing me along and keeping me warm. They took an attack from a Mecha-snake for me, struggled with me up the mountain until we both collapsed. I felt my chest clench at that moment and while we soared together to the top of the mountain, I barely noticed all the beautiful scenery. It only highlighted my realization that that white cloak was still with me. Landing at the top, I stood there in awe of how our Journey was coming to an end. I watched as White Cloak drew a heart in the snow around me.
I didn't suspect these fellow adventurers were real players until that moment, and as I watched the credits, I knew. As I listened to the ending song, I almost cried with love for my fellow players. It's amazing how much of an effect these wordless players had on me, and I want to know...What are your stories?
