Your life or a strangers?

You have been kidnapped by a madman, and he has given the choice of who to kill to you. The stranger seems a nice enough person, late 20's, dressed casually. The slight catch is the whoever you decide will be killed, the madman will never be caught.

So who do you save? Your own life or theirs.

And to make this more interesting, would you decision be altered by the stranger's:

Age
Gender
How they are dressed
Their appearance
Their level of fear
How nice a person you believe them to be

I would say that unless they were either fairly old, or obviously not a nice person, then I would probably sacrifice myself. I'd say there's a pretty good chance that they're a better person than I am, or have/will have a happier or more productive life than I will/do.

I don't believe in heaven... that said this would be a tough choice for me. Sacrifice my life or someone elses and live with the guilt. My mind would blame the whole situation on the madman who gave me the choice to begin with but... I'm not sure what I'd do to be honest. It would be a battle between my self-preservation instinct and my conscience.

There's entirely a good chance that this stranger is actually a better person than me. I don't care. My life is precious, and while I might sacrifice it for a loved one, I won't for a stranger.

Now, if it were just money or possessions, shit, that's different - I can always get those again.
