But you haven't seen it. You can't really state that it's overrated or have a true opinion on it.
I have never eaten feces. I got a feeling it tastes like crap. You can judge things without actually partaking of it. You know your likes and dislikes. If something you encounter that seems like something you will dislike, it would be wise to avoid it.

If you read my previous post, I am willing to give Gravity a chance later on. It just from what I read from the people who like the movie. I was right about my assumption about the movie.

Considering I've only seen one movie this year, my pick is Nebraska.
Really good movie, excellent cast. June Squibb deserves Best (Supporting) Actress.

As far as I can remember, I only watched two movies this year that were actually made this year: Man of Steel (because my church's college group wanted to see it) and Monsters University (because my entire family loved Monsters Inc.). Of course, there were plenty of other films I wanted to see, but I didn't have the time or money to watch them, nor did I have any friends who wanted to see them. Needless to say, though, neither of the ones I saw really seem worth of a "Best Movie of 2013" title. If I had to choose, it would be Man of Steel. Neither was particularly well-written, but Man of Steel was at least decently entertaining for what it was (minus the horrible political and religious commentaries), unlike Monsters University which kept fluctuating from semi-good movie to snore fest.

Best Movie of 2013: 2 way tie for Frozen and Pacific Rim.

Both movies managed to completely outstrip my expectations. I went into Pacific Rim expecting for it to just be a biff, pow SFX popcorn muncher that I could just enjoy for how damn goofy it was. And while it delivered on that it also created world that was surprisingly well developed and a cast of characters that I found to be entertaining twists on their respective archetypes (still have a bit of a hetero man crush on Tendo Choi.) As for Frozen, well I only saw it because my company rented out the theatre and I was getting paid to see it. I was fully expecting to sit through 90 minutes of "The adventures of a Special needs Snowman." Much to my surprise I got to enjoy a well crafted tale that simultaneously acknowledges and subverts the traditional "Disney formula." Can't say I was super keen on all the songs but "Let it Go" and "Frozen Heart" found their way onto my Spotify Playlist PDQ.

Worst Movie of 2013: Man of Steel. (There were a lot of terrible films out this year. Keeping this to things I paid to see.)
I've always contended that DC heroes, as a rule, tend do be more complex in their origins than Marvel's. When adapting for film this means we have to dedicate more time to world building and backstory. That's all fine and good and it makes for some well crafted stories if done correctly. The worst part about this movie is that there's obviously a great story in there, it just got overshadowed by the nonlinear storytelling, exhausting drawn-out action scenes and plot holes.

Most Underrated Movie: Prisoners.

I love crime dramas and I'm a sucker for serial killer stories so this was already right up my alley. The surprising addition of Hugh Jackman's moral dilemma was an added bonus that I honestly didn't see coming. I don't know if "underrated" is the correct term here since most of the folks I know who did see it really liked it, but I know that it didn't get a terribly big release and was shuttled out of theatres pretty quickly.

Most Overrated Movie: Sharknado.

Man, fuck this movie. "So bad it's good" flicks are not made intentionally. Don't shit on my plate and then tell me to like it because it's supposed to be shit.

'12 Years a Slave' is a 'white-guilt' film? Are you fucking serious? A movie comes along that tries to showcase the utter horror of being treated like an object because of skin colour and you want to call it a 'white-guilt' film?

One word. BULLSHIT! The level of brutality of that film is perhaps unprecedented, and the legacy of slavery in America is NOT something you just get to ignore. I was going to post about my favorite films of the year, but the level of ignorance in that comment alone has killed my interest. Good day sir.
I agree, white guilt is not a thing. I dont feel guilty for horrible acts that I was in no way involved with

A) I was born in '92
B) Im british so why should I feel guilty about american issues

I love movies about the civil rights movement and I cant wait to get round to watching the butler. I dont feel guilt or remorse when watching these but what I am is astounded at how this was acceptable and even encouraged by the authorities. People who use the phrase "white guilt" obviously have something to feel guilty about, instead of feeling guilty they should watch these films and maybe they would be able to empathise with how these people were treated and make sure it doesnt happen again

Elysium. I thought District 9 was pretty good, but not the holy grail as it was made out to be. But Elysium just stuck with me. I enjoyed just about everything in it, from the characters to the world to the art design. And the action just hit hard. Surprised by the meh response it ended up getting.

Man, I just realized I saw a stupid amount of movies this year.

I didn't see many films this year. My favourite was probably Danny Boyle's new one Trance:

Really cool cinematography in the dream sequences. The twist is deep enough that you won't guess all of the details even if you will get the general gist before the end. Some cool performances too. It took me ages to work out where I'd seen that head gangster guy before (he was in Brotherhood of the Wolf). Anyway, bet nobody else here went to see that one, heh.

I didn't see that many movies this year, but I really enjoyed most if not all the films I did see in the cinema. Those included Django unchained, The Heat, The world's end and This is the end in order of the level of enjoyment I would say:

The Heat
Django unchained
This is the end
The world's end

This is what my top 10 looks like right now:

1. Gravity
2. Frances Ha
3. The World's End
4. Filth
5. Rush.
6. Stoker
7. The Hunt
8. The Spectacular Now
9. Le Passe
10. Frozen

Granted, I haven't seen most of the critics are raving about right now like Wolf of Wall Street and 12 Years a Slave.

Worst movie: Safe Haven? Almost forgot it was this year, was released in like February. Rapture Palooza, The Big Wedding, A Good Day to Die Hard and Lovelace are up there too.

Most overrated movie of the year: Upstream colour I think. I mean, I thought it was good but a lot of people seem to be putting it in their best of the year lists and I don't think it really deserves to be up there.

I liked the second part of the Hobbit. But I'm a horrible critic though, I'm easily entertained and the "perfect viewer", I rarely see plottwists coming. I bet there's a lot of bad things in the movie, but did it entertain me for three hours? Yes, it did. I wasn't annoyed by the story aspects that weren't featured in the book, I liked it as it is. If it makes a film better, there's nothing wrong with removing or adding things in my opinion

Sure I'm game... but man... this was NOT a good movie year IMO...

The movies I liked this year...
- Iron Man 3
- The Last Stand
- Thor: The Dark World
- The Worlds End
- Evil Dead

Movies I was sort of "let down" by...
- Elysium
- Frozen
- John Dies At The End

Worst Movies I saw this year...
- World War Z, seriously... so bad...
- Man of Steel, I just... really don't like Zack Snyder's directing... or the direction he's taking comic book movies... a lot of people blame Chris Nolan for this one but I'm placing it firmly on Snyder... he's a terrible director.

Absolute best movie I saw in 2013
- Pacific Rim, seriously awesome and everything I ever wanted in a movie about Giant Robots punching Giant Monsters

A movie that portrays white people as evil and black people as suffering martyrs. It shouldn't be considered as a "white-guilt" film because it's based on a historical event? I agree that slavery should not be forgotten from history. However, people try to parlay guilt from historical events(like slavery) to justify using double standards.

If you read the whole paragraph, I didn't say 12 Years a Slave was a bad movie. In fact, I was looking forward to watch it in the upcoming year. It was just that this year, people were really obnoxious about racial politics. It made me want to skip movies that were about race.

Your argument would stand if the antagonists in the film WERE one-note, and there were already films like '12 Years.' But, they aren't, and there isn't. The only other work that's relatively similar to this is 'Roots' and they're still pretty different, so there's no real precedent. In fact, none of the films you mentioned should be lumped together because they're about different things. 'The Butler' is a unique perspective during the changes that occured during the civil rights movement, and 'Fruitvale Station' is about the bigotry that still exists, in spite of the fact that black people were made equal over 50 years ago! As for the political angle, cite sources. I see no political discussion related to them. I'm actually pretty sure that Steve McQueen refuses to talk about the politics of '12 Years.' He wanted to make a film about slavery, that's it. The reason they're lauded is because they're good, and if you infer guilt that's your problem.
I think we have different definitions about the term "white guilt". If you want to create a thread about that, I will be glad to discuss the issue further.

With regards to movies, like I said, I haven't seen 12 Years a Slave yet. What I do know is 2 white men kidnapped a free black man and sold him into slavery. The plantation owner is notorious for abusing his slaves. That's really evil. The only white man that isn't a violent racist is a Canadian. So, white Americans were all evil.

The other movies that were mentioned. The Butler is like Forrest Gump meets The Remains of the Day. It just rehashed the bigoted things that happened before and during Civil Rights. Fruitvale Station is the movie whose message I have the most trouble with. We should have sympathy for a drug dealer who started a fight on a subway, because he was black & got killed by an inept cop. What happened to him wasn't racial, but people who were aware about the incident tried to make it about race.

When I mentioned people trying to parlay guilt from the past, I wasn't referring to the filmmakers. I was referring to minority activists and social crusaders. In their zeal to argue their points, they try to equate what happened in the past with an incident in the present to justify what they are advocating for.

Best Movie of 2013: In my opinion it was Thor 2. It was such a great movie, I loved the plot twist at the end ( I won't say what happened for the sake of those who have not seen it ), It had the humor that most Marvel movies have, and a third reason may be because I love Thor haha.

Worst Movie of 2013: Jobs. Jobs I say twice because it was THE WORST movie of 2013 no doubt. The movie wasn't enough about Steve Jobs, it was mostly about Apple Computers, don't get me wrong, I love Apple, I'm using a Mac right now, but if you are going to title a movie "Jobs", make it about him, not his company. I also don't think Ashton Kutcher did a good Steve Jobs impersonation, no offence to him.

2nd Worst Movie of 2013: (I originaly had this as worst but I remembered the Jobs movie) Now, I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me on this, but I say it would probably be between Monsters University and Planes. I can't decide which one, but in Monsters U, they were pretty much coasting on the reputation of Monster's inc, they even used parts of the same soundtrack, granted some movies can pull off using the same soundtrack with signature theme songs or whatever but it didn't work with MU. I guess I just didn't like the movies idea to begin with though so I'm also biased that way lol. my other choice was planes, I also didn't like the Idea of this to begin with but that didn't cloud my judgement. They tried to make it too much like cars, the characters were too much like the original cars movie.

Most Underrated Movie: I will have to agree with the original post. even though I enjoyed The Lone Ranger. I agree for the same reasons basically so there is no use typing it again.

Most overrated movie: Percy Jackson 2. I think that people are just saying its good because the idea is based off of the books, now, i didn't read the books so I don't know how accurate it is to the story, but I was just "underwhelmed" so to say, of this movie.

I have no opinion of the others so i suppose this is the end of my post.
