Encouraging me to put down the controller and brush up on my philosophy, or did you skip the original post?

My real problems with it are the two plot twists at the end. One is horribly trite and the other is just stupid...and horribly trite.

On the whole I still think it's a fun game, but yeah, it's overrated.

It was a quirky game when it came out, with unusual art style and music. The characters came across reasonably well for the time, although they don't have much depth, back then, it was OK. You would fill out the holes and make your own image. This is why Jade is considered a "strong" female lead, not because it was in the game, but because we all remember her like that.

The mechanics and puzzle design are competent, but not brilliant.

My main gripe is that the game sort of falls apart towards the end. It feels rushed, specially the actual ending, it has "we ran out of time" written all over it.

One of the first games to really make me curse a lack of ability to save when and where I wanted. I cannot tell you how many times I had to restart the dang thing because I couldn't play for more than a few minutes at a time.
What I did play was very high quality for back in the day. But, games really have gotten much more playable for guys like me. I've played Fallout 3 for about 200 hours... 10 min. at a time.
I'm curious, is that based on a certain personal principle (like refusing to play too long so you won't waste part of a day) or is your 10 min only play time based on a condition or ailment?

I loved it, everything about it, mind you I played it 8 years ago.

10 minutes between crashes I would wager.

As a philosophy nerd that made me laugh, kudos.

OT: I bought it when it came out and I loved it. Then I played it about a few months ago and I can see where you are coming from since now it just doesn't seem to match the hype that everyone, including me, gives it.

Doesn't mean I don't love the game any less.

It's in the same league as Silent Hill 2, Primal or Legacy of Kain: gameplay is lacking, but the story and atmosphere more than makes up for it, making it a classic despite the rough edges.

I liked it. One of the few games out there I'd say has 'soul', as strange a term as that is.

Gameplay mechanics were alright, nothing great. Combat was... alright. Visuals, yet more alright. But despite being all-round alright it had a great charm to it. A sympathetic and endearing protagonist, a simple but enjoyable plot, an entertaining cast of side-characters, unique art style, and a fantastic soundtrack.

One of those few games that just makes me smile remembering it which is surprisingly rare when you consider all the grimdark angst, gore, and violence that tends to pervade gaming. Just a nice, well told story with a charming main character and a pleasant adventurous vibe to it.

It's the sort of game I generally recommend to people just getting into videogames as a medium. Can think of few better introductions!

Can see how the embittered gaming grognard might not see the appeal however, especially if they're not as caught up in the fantasy of it all as I might be.

I love the game. It's vibrant art style pulls me in, the characters make me care, the gameplay is surprisingly good considering how simple it is. Then there's the soundtrack, which is one of my favorites for any game.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the problems you have with it come from the fact that it is a fairly old game. This was back when games never really had much if any character development or story arc.

I got it a couple months back and i haven't finished it yet. It's a good game, and I like the stealth sections a lot, though they get a bit repetitive. The combat is fairly weak. The exploration and filming is really fun. The world is interesting but I'm not a big fan of all the anthropomorphism. Jade is a character that I find to be very interesting and her character design is one of the best I've ever seen (and probably the only person that can pull off green lipstick). However, the other characters a fairly forgettable, except for maybe the blind guy in that one bar. Overall it's a good game in my opinion and I look forward to completing it and am looking forward to seeing what the sequel will bring.

Sadly, an ailment. I'm married with kids.

Seriously, until recently, it was difficult to do anything fun for more than a few minutes at a time without being interrupted. It's getting much better now that kids are getting older, more self sufficient and wanting to hang with their friends more than me, but I still like a game that allows me to save where I want, or has a LOT of checkpoints, which I thought lacking in this game.

Playing through Star Wars Force Unleashed 1 now, and, I'd write the saves are reasonably spaced.

I bought the game used near the end of the Gamecube life cycle and simply couldn't get into it after 3 or so hours. Given how popular the game is...I just assume its like FF13 in that it gets much better after a slow start.

I'll never know though...unless I get a free copy to try again as I've sold my gamecube and that game a few years back.

I bought Beyond good and Evil the day it came out on the PS2 (yep one of the few :p) and I really enjoyed it. The only thing I lamented at the time was the short length of the game, but the richness and depth of the world, the aesthetics and the setting that game brought was up there with the best.

The game is a testament to great game design. Hear me out...
EVERYTHING in this game was carefully crafted with functionality in mind. Ever heard someone complain about the controls? the graphics? the freedom? the ui? the animation? the mechanics of the gameplay?
BG&E brought together pretty much everything that had been established within the adventure game genre and tied it into a perfect package. There is nothing this game does WRONG. But that does not mean it is not lacking. The combat is simplistic and functional. The storyline (though only one part of a supposedly bigger whole) does the job but with no real variances, the missions and tasks you perform are fun, well-designed and made and satisfying, but never amazing...

The game is a benchmark of great game design (even now), but when playing you can't shake that underlying feeling of function over flash. That is not necessarily a bad thing. It depends on your viewpoint :)

I played Beyond Good & Evil for the first time last year.

I liked it.

Don't get me wrong, it had plenty of flaws. The overarching plot wasn't anything special. There was some dodgy level design. The camera and controls would occasionally screw me over. You get the idea.

However, I found the game to be, well... undeniably charming. The characters were likeable, the melting-pot setting was interesting, the gameplay was varied.

It's not the kind of game I would unconditionally recommend to other people, and I can see why it never sold particularly well. But it's still a personal favourite.

Nah I saw the original post, I've just never played it. But when else could I make this "joke"?
