Your Original The Character in Sonic Forces?

As we all know, the upcoming 3D Sonic game, Sonic Forces, will allow you to create an OC to fight alongside the two Sonics. For anyone getting the game when it comes out, what's your plan for your Original The Character?

I'll start, I'm gonna make the most badass version of Winnie The Pooh this side of the version in Winnie The Pooh Home Run Derby.

I'm one of the few Sonic fans that really loves most of the games. But I still really don't understand their constant need to be trying new things that don't seem to gel very well with the formula. This avatar is one of them. I mean, I'll get the game. I can't remember the last time I didn't get a Sonic game - I just don't understand why they always have to add something weird in there.

The two worst games in the series, Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic 06, tried to bring loads of elements that no one wanted for no reason. Fucked it up completely.

Sonic Unleashed literally could have been the best modern Sonic game in series, but they added the werehog. It was ok in itself, but it just wasnt necessary and was longer than the fun bits with Sonic running.

Lost World with that silly Mario Galaxy style and too many gameplay elements like the snowball. Wasn't that keen.

Story book series - don't even get me started on the gimmicks in those.

The spin offs like Boom, Chronicles and Labyrinth don't bother me as much because they weren't really classed as the main series. But why bring in things no one wants all the time?

The most critically acclaimed ones have always been the ones that were fairly simple. The original classics, Generations and Colours (the wisps are just an optional extra for the most part). And Let's be honest, the best bit from the adventure series was the bits where you played as Sonic or shadow, playing in the normal style.

I am pleased that they are largely improving in general. Mania is amazing and brings me right back to my childhood and the reason I love Sonic. But you have to remember that was essentially outsourced to fans turned developers so it's not Sonic Team proper. However, looking at it, I'm sure Forces will be at least as good as Generations. But why the avatar? I don't get it.

Okay, am I the only one who made a Sonic OC in their youth that WASN'T a hedgehog?

They did - they called him Shadow. ;p

Also they seem to be repeating that with Infinite.

Playing Devil's Advocate, I can see the avatar working better than, say, giving Shadow a gun (which was fine mechanically I guess) or Sonic a sword. There's a large amount of OC's in Sonic fandom, far more than you get in other medias. You can view it as a cynical move (as I do) or an attempt to show appreciation for said fandom (which is closer to the official reason), but at the least, there is a raison d'?tre for the avatar.

While I don't really jump to the defence of those games often, I will say that I don't think that's the reason for their shortcomings.

The main element that was introduced to Shadow was the use of guns and vehicles. To be honest, I don't find these too egregious in of themselves. Rather, the main issue I have with Shadow is how its path system works. There's often so little congruence between branches, that the story is really a jumbled mess. And even if you don't care about the story, it still means you have to play every level at least twice (I think), and play Westopolis every...single...time...

Also find the game dull, but if anything, the guns give some variety.

As for 06, if anything, it seemed to be bringing back elements that people wanted, namely a return to the Adventure style gameplay. Now, 06 is a buggy mess, and subjectively speaking, I really don't care for the aesthetic or story (or Elise...gah!), but as far as new elements go, to be honest, I liked Silver's gameplay. All in all, I don't think it's the elements of its gameplay that take 06 down, it's that it's a glitchy game compounded by a convoluted story.

As someone who finds Secret Rings literally unplayable, I won't ^_^

I will say thought that based on watching playthroughs, the storybook games have some of the better stories in the series, and I love the aesthetic behind them. Just wish you had a more conventional control scheme for them.

Sonic Boom is simply the latest non-Sega Sonic, and it at least gave us the Sonic Boom cartoon, which is pretty enjoyable. As for Chronicles, I like the idea of a Sonic RPG, but Chronicles is marred by nonsensical worldbuilding and simplistic mechanics.

On the flipside, I do like the Sonic Battle/Riders/Spinball spinoffs, so I think there's a precedent for getting Sonic out of his comfort zone. Just do a good job of it.

I don't disagree with any of the points you make about the shortcomings of the games but within the term 'elements' I include things like the ridiculous way of progressing through the story in Shadow The Hedghog as well as the Mach speed sections, the town missions, and all the other millions of things I think didn't worked very well in Sonic 06. Sonic doesn't need to be complicated. It's a simple premise.

I don't hate any of them really, but I know a lot of people do so I thought I'd give them a mention. Labyrinth was fairly harmless, it only takes about 15 mins to complete. Chronicles was boring to play I thought. The less said about boom the better. I've not played the newest one though. I've heard it's alright. Not too interested in the Boom franchise tbf. I agree spinball was very good. There's a really fun nod to one of the old mega drive spin off games in the second zone in Mania. It's great,

What are you talking about? Sonichu was a complete 100% original character, not related in anyway to any other video game character or property at all...
