Smash Bros and Guitar Hero are always good choices. If I fancy going a bit retro then Micro Machines is still an amazing game to play multiplayer, as is Goldeneye. Cap it off with a bit of either Capcom vs SNK 2 or Street Fighter IV and its a good night of gaming.
Modern warfare one. Either together online, taking turns mucking about online with random rules, pistols only, having to play UAV jam etc. Also playing 4 way splitscreen, small maps, versus.
Occasional MW2 throwing knife matches take place.
Left 4 dead when we bother setting up a LAN.
Fifa 10 is good, because 2 of us have it and 2 don't(of my usual gaming mates), so 2v2 balances well.
The majority of my games are PS2 games, and most of those are 1 player. Dokapon Kingdom ruins friendships, and Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon sucks. All that's left is my SNES and Super Mario Kart. Board games for the win!
if it's at least two players, it has been considered at one point by me and my one gaming friend. notable games include Star Wars Battefront 2, Resident Evil 5, and a wide variety of sports games for reasons neither of us can explain.
There arnt many 4 player splitscreen game nowadays most of its online. But:

Gears of war 2 (whored)
