Well there are so many to choose from, but this s one of my all time favourite games and the intro at the time got my blood pumping for sure!

Deadly Premonition or Katamari Damacy. Why do LSD when the people making games can do it for you?

TES4 Oblivion. Even though the game turned out to be a huge disappointment, i still remember the goosebumps I got watching it the first time. Morrowind was just too damn good.

Bioshock probably wins it, but Zelda: OoT has impressed me for years. So many other intros try to be flashy with high-impact graphics and sound. OoT knows it's badass, and just plays the Ocarina a ton to clips of a horse running around. Yet some how that is badass in itself.

Another World
Metal Gear Solid (all of them)
Half Life 2
Bioshock
Snatcher

As said above by somebody, the best would definitely have to be Bad Dudes though, just an amazing scene setter that has yet to be topped. When I played that I realized games were an art form capable of touching me from an emotional standpoint.

While i do rank Borderlands pretty high, I think ill post something else for variety.

Four videos of sheer awesome at any rate.

Honourable mentions go to Mass Effect 2, but thats been mentioned a few times already.

All of the Above srsly there all awesome Zelda Borderlands Oblivion FF9

But ME2 was the best opener to a Great game. Its like opening a can of Baked beans and Sausages and you use the best Can opener to do it.

Baked Beans and Sausages being Mass Effect 2

and the Can opener is the intro to ME2

I was going to go with Civ IV, which I'd leave on the menu music just because it was so damned awesome.

But I'll have to go with this one, just for the sheer awesome of it.

Hmm...

Best one I can remember is Abe's Oddysee. It's so dark and it's burned into my mind from watching it too much as a kid.
The MGS series and Shadow of the Colossus also.

Are we talking cinematic or opening gameplay?

Cinematic: Warriors Orochi (the first one), the most adrenaline fueled mosh up accompanied by guitar rifts that cause any listener to attack those around them with staff like objects a'la Lu Bu/Tadakatsu Honda stlye,

Opening gaming: Bioshock, flawless.

Vagrant Story. In fact if you ask me for best anything my answer will almost always be Vagrant Story.

EDIT: Except for graphics, good at the time but PS1 rendering has aged horribly. This game demands an HD coat of paint.

I personally don't think it matters. Bioshock's cinematic opening was practically non-existent, but I consider the "opening" to last at least as long as it takes to get to the city. I'd even argue to the point of getting the pistol because it's still an interactive cutscene by that point, but a much more fair line to draw would be when you get your first plasmid.

In terms of cinematic presentation though, Bioshock has nothing on Final Fantasy 9 or Full Throttle. The thing is none of those intros are interactive, but they only set up the story. They do nothing for the mood of the game. It's apples and oranges, and thus why both should count. As long as we aren't extending the intros through the tutorial, I think we will be fine.

I forgot about that one. I only played it once a few years ago, and I was blown away by the animation and other technology that went into that intro despite it being on the rather weak PS1.
