For me, it's got to be Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure.

It's one of the few good games for the Wii, and one of the fewer that actually benefitted from motion controls. It's a puzzle-adventure where you solve adventure game-style puzzles to put a legendary pirate's golden skeleton back together...yeah.

It's also a really, REALLY hard game if you go without hints, but figuring out a puzzle on your own... I can't tell you how good it feels (plus it's good for your score).

Overall, awesome game.

Lessee here, trying to contribute something new here...

Nope, Alpha Protocol is getting plenty of love. Level-5 in general is taken, as well. God Hand has been mentioned too. Jesus people, you ain't leaving me no choice but to whip out my trusty ol'...

Breath of Fire III. Or the entire series, pretty much. Why?

The character roster is very impressive and interesting. An ancient guardian, a weretiger, a winged princess and a goddamn boxing onion. And the main character is a dragon, to boot.

Combine dragons and tigers, and you get what amounts to the single most awesome thing in a fantasy RPG since... I can't even tell.

You punks want to bring it up a notch? Breath of Fire IV. A goddamn exquisite masterpiece of a game, I tell ya. I still prefer III, but that's just my nostalgia speaking. I mean, they're both old games, but III is the one I play through once a year. Sometimes even IV, but always III. I won't go into details here, as I've already derailed plenty enough.

My final answer? BoF III. Hands down. Just too many fond memories to pick anything else.

Gothic. Now, don't get me wrong. The people who do appreciate this game appreciate it's the second coming of christ. But to me it seems like it never really broke out of Eastern Europe in terms of its fan base.

Second though; Mech Warrior: Mercenaries. Lived in the shadow of it's predecessor, but in it's own right a damn good game.
Which one? The one based on MW2 and the Clan Invasion is awesome, the one based on MW4 and the FedCom Civil War... not so much.

Couldn't agree more with this, used to be the only reason I kept my XBox around, since the better version came out I gave the XBox away, but kept the Alan Wake CE that came in the book turned my PC version into a proper CE. Great atmosphere, great story, and character that at times was hard to like, but that is what made him more human. Two really great villains, probably the best I have seen in a long time. Barbra Jagger and Mr. Scratch. So sad that it was a bit of a flop on XBox, able to recoup their development costs within 24 hours of release for the PC version though. Here's to hoping we see a sequel, and maybe this time everyone can enjoy it, even PS3 fans.

Hard Reset, think Serious Sam with amazing graphics and terrible voice acting. Still one of my favorites though and extremely unforgiving.

Binary Domain was really well done, not what I was expecting when I picked it up on Steam sale. Couldn't stop playing till 4 in the morning, had to call in sick because of it.

BioShock 2, not the best story, but I like the little sister elements, and with the Minerva's Den DLC, the story is just as good if not a little better than the first.

NecroVision and Lost Company, from a foot soldier in World War 1 in the trenches, to a magic wielding vampire riding a dragon or a mech, yeah that escalated quickly. Probably one of the most bizarre games I have played, really fun, but a system punisher.

The Void, creepy and weird, and very much an interesting story.

There are more, but I will leave them to the inevitable repeat of this thread next month.

Madworld.
Not a single person I knew had played it (and a large percentage of that hadn't even heard of it) until I let them borrow it.

Mass Effect 1. How could you finish this game, and then even consider anything in me2 and especially me3 ANY good?
I disagree, at least as far as ME2 goes. ME1 was very obviously made on a budget, but was still one of the greatest games ever. Mass Effect 2 is the same design philosophy and great story as ME1, just with more money, and it's one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.

EDIT: I completely agree with you on Assassin's Creed though. Way too much changed from AC1, and it's been going downhill since mid AC2 when the story started getting batshit crazy.

The 2008 Prince of Persia. I mean, yes, it had a pathetically weak story, but it was gorgeous, and it was absurdly, giddily fun.

Age of Mythology, perhaps. Fantastic game?wonderful soundtrack, great single-player campaign, gorgeous visuals, super gameplay. It always seems to be forgotten in favor of the Age of Empires games, despite having so much more character.

Other candidates: People seem to overlook Far Cry 2's fantastic gunplay, and the Killzone games are my favorite multiplayer FPSs but never seem to be uttered in the same breath as COD or Halo. For something really out of left field, NASCAR Thunder 2004 has one of the most satisfying driving models in the entire history of racing games.

There has never been a game quite like Steambot Chronicles

and the world is a darker place for it. It was an open world game with a branching storyline, a rhythm mini-game, and customizable robot cars. It never get a lot of critical acclaim, because it wasn't the most polished game, but it oozed charm. I was so desperate for more after I finished that I even bought the terrible PSP pseudo-sequel.

I didn't realise it was underrated. In that case, this is my answer.

Come for the art style. Stay for the innovative use and seamless integration of motion controls, and the art style. Also, you play as the spiritual reincarnation of a god-wolf and your quest is to make everything colourful again. Buckets of win.

Seeing how sales bombed and people didn't realize how great it was til years later I'd call that underrated. Better late than never though, I'm glad others finally discovered the game.

I'd say Crusader Kings 2. That game is crack for me, and while I know it's kinda niche, I think it deserved more attention than it got.

Chivalry MW is underrated; it's popular, but there are a few metacritic reviews dragging it down.

Hard Reset is probably the most underrated game I've played in a long time.

I would have to disagree that KOA: Reckoning was underrated. Most sites gave it around an 80, and I think that's fair. The game had amazing gameplay, but suffered from horribly boring, MMO type quests and a generic fantasy settings. It does have some of the best DLC out there though. Oh, and like others have said, it's way too easy, but that's in large part because the battle system is so good that it's hard not to overpower your enemies if you're remotely decent at games like DMC or God of War.

Oh, also Shogun 2. Shogun 2 is underrated; it's by far the best total war game, yet it's always in the shadow of Rome TW. People seem to forget how much enemy AI has improved in Total War. There's no longer allies/neutral parties randomly blockading your ports and destroying alliances and the unit balance has never been better.

Bully

It was big news because of the controversy back when it was being released, but hardly anyone ever talks about it anymore. And it was the last Rockstar game I genuinely enjoyed, before they went all super serious on us and forgot how to have fun. Max Payne 3 being the pinnacle of all this dreary cynicism.

I keep hearing rumors about a possible sequel, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that one.

Feel ashamed that I actually forgot about Bully. One of those games that are just fun.

I have to say the Buffy the Vampire Slayer games, especially the X-Box exclusive one. It had been a while since I played them, and I figured I only enjoyed them because it was Buffy and I love Buffy, but I recently replayed them and they ARE really good. In the PS2 one, I was especially impressed by Willow's magic system. It was fun to use the buttons to do magic rather than just punch, kick, punch, and remembering all the spells was a bit more challenging. X-X was a plain fireball, X-Square-X was a magic shield, and X-X-O was a sun beam (mentioning that because I'm curious, are there good games with a similar battle system? Never played one).

I'm sure if I thought on it a bit more I could come up with a different answer, but SWAT 4 definitely deserves recognition as a criminally underrated game.

Absolutely!

In fact, I'll throw in all SWAT games here. The first one strived for realism using FMV's, but for its time, it gave a good idea what it meant to be a member of SWAT, including all the tedious training.

SWAT 2 was a fresh take on the RTS genre, where instead of an army, you have a couple of SWAT elements fighting a creepy religious cult.

SWAT 3 had my all-time favourite level of the series, the Fairfax Residence. I must've played through that hundreds of times. Plus, the free missions and upgrades to the base game were really welcome.

And finally, SWAT 4 was a superb game in its own right, for all the reasons you mentioned and then some!

We need a new game. And I don't mean a crappy PSP spin-off.
